>>100120923That's pretty much what got me to ditch streaming services and instead download my music. Every time I check back at Spotify, i find more and more songs disappearing. I feel like it's gonna get worse with decade-old labels as well. They're probably near their expiration date.

I started hoarding it around 2018 because, for some reason, I had a hunch they'd crack down on amateur porn (which they did, in 2019-2020). They managed to erase it off the internet aside from a few websites, like socialmediagirls, anonib, some chans

>>100123197It usually happens to music that isn't mainstream popular. They disappear for any reason but most of the time it has to do with expiring licenses/contracts or labels shutting down. Pretty much why you should start saving your music before this happens to your favorite stuff.

Probably the only useful thing I ever saved was a tutorial for setting up a wireguard tunnel to talk over a shadowsocks proxy. Pretty neat stuff, it got taken down for quite a while and it was nice to be able to post it for people who needed it. Powerful tool to fight governmental censorship, makes a fully encrypted tunnel just look like https traffic. Also good for bypassing deep packet inspection from a corporate firewall you can access your homelab from work. Dont be surprised if your job suspects corporate espionage if you do this though. It's back up for now for anyone interested in saving it in case you need it. https://oilandfish.net/posts/wireguard-shadowsocks.html
>>100124487I had gig for 2 years, but realized it was a waste of money for me at least. Only thing I ever downloaded that I wanted quickly was movie torrents and back on 300Mb, it only takes as long as it takes to make some popcorn to download a movie and everything else I can wait a while on. I'm not too pressed about download speeds.

>>100124420>Xfiles wiped from the internetSo I would just turn on the TV in my room set the time and go to sleep to like 3 episodes of xfiles until the FX online channel decided to paywall them online and halt all free broadcasting for a little over a year. This is when I realized that everything we have in abundance right now could be gone tomorrow. I was naive in thinking that it would just run forever at the same time slot. I've been hoarding since and I'm still missing like 100 episodes. I can get them, I just haven't had time and I don't trust that my machine won't commit sudoku if I leave it downloading all day. >>100116271porn hoarding anon here. hello again.this weekend i rtfm'd python's scrapy toolset and wrote a spider to crawl popular porn phpbb sites. the problem with these sites is that i never remember to check them all, and good content is dropped by the paywall'd hosts all the time (especially keep2share). so my spider crawls several forums, selects all images that were posted "Yesterday" (not "Today" because it'd be an incomplete record, and not "<date>" because fuck datetime arithmetic), and loads them into a new piwigo gallery with a json linking the name of the file back to the forum post so i can find the download link. this morning, i had ~3000 images to search through and found 3 videos i wanted; it took about 15m.as always, i am not autistic, just bored. this is my hobby. thanks for reading.

>>100132207You're not bored, you're sick. Your addictions have been weaponized against you and you try to cope with them because you have some complementary tech skills. >>100135626>what's the catch?the catch is that hard drive will eventually fail and you will lose all datayou need at least two of them + an offsite backup (aka 18 terabytes of cloud storage or another 18 terabyte hard drive at someone else's house)this is why "storage is cheap" niggers are fucking retards, they never account for redundancy
>>100126858Could you link to Horus-Ra As The Archontic Alien Parasite parts, I assume they're pdf's or something and it sounds interesting as fuck
>>100135626some are retired drives from datacenters while others are refurbished and/or off-spec drives. make of that what you will--and if you're putting anything important on those drives you need to make sure you have proper backups of it. I wouldn't be caught dead running only one of these without any redundant copies. turns out that drive that dropped out of my first server's array was just straight up dead. it might have showed warning signs but I never checked SMART logs. fortunately the drive was under warranty and I'll have my replacement within the week. though, even if the raidz2 completely died, I have a mirror of my data on the second server (as well as some older copies of my data on tape, I'm overdue for an update on my tape backups). point is, no matter the drive, you need to prioritize having good backups.
turns out "the internet is forever" redditors were wrong. your local DARPANET matrix rewrites history cyclically and will continue to do so until they achieve their desired outcome (total slavery). save what you can and remember the rest.

I don't know about "useful". And I don't have it immediately on me, it's rotting away on a floppy disk somewhere in storage: an alpha-development tech demo for a videogame that never was finished. It was going to be called Sabotage, a full-3D FPS for MS-DOS. Its engine was coded by a solo developer but he didn't have the time/resources to gel it out into a full game. The tech demo itself definitely showcased a full 3D engine with lightmaps (you could also add new lights to bake into the lightmap by pressing spacebar), etc just like Quake ultimately had. I'm about 75% certain this demo was released a year before Quake hit the market. I don't remember the programmer's name, all I can remember is he had some Polish or Slavic-sounding surname. The only other detail I remember is that he was going to include vehicular combat levels in addition to regular FPS combat gameplay.
