Is it still worth buying M1-M3?Have you guys seen this report?https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/03/hackers-can-extract-secret-encryption-keys-from-apples-mac-chips/

>>100152510So PC/Linux is the way for you.
>>100152467Read the full details.https://gofetch.fail/In short, it's interesting but has few implications in practice.Turns out it IS patchable. The feature that makes it vulnerable can simply be turned off, either completely or just when running crypto code. (Initially it was thought that was only possible on M3, but the Asahi people have found that it can be done on M1+M2 too). And it's already always off in kernel-space crypto code like FileVault. It would have no effect on my purchasing decisions personally.
>>100152594Thanks for that. Are you getting an M Apple?
>>100152467Whoops, you weren't supposed to find that backdoor.
>>100153005I picked up a used but near-pristine M1 Air recently because I need a Mac to build iOS apps (and my old one was no longer allowed to do it for various stupid Apple reasons).I kind of resented having to buy it at all, but having used it for a while, I have to admit it's a very nice computer. Lightning fast despite being the slowest apple silicon model, battery life is insanely good, no fan yet stays cold to the touch in normal use. Great build quality, screen, keyboard, touchpad.Whether I recommend it or not really depends on your use case. In my case I had no choice. In terms of RAM and storage space you can get much better value elsewhere. I definitely wouldn't buy a Mac desktop. If you travel a lot, and therefore will be using it without peripherals and need great battery life, then their laptops are probably worth it.
