I think this is mainly because of the ecosystem's freedom that it's become this powerful. Had it gone the way of traditional 2D printers; full of DRM and locked down in firmware they would have been garbage now.

The last thing I used my 3D printer for was to print a replacement battery panel for a remote, but the fragile printed clip broke immediately so I just bought a proper replacement instead for $0.50. That was over a year ago and the printer has been collecting dust ever since.
