>a shitty clone of macOS: the DE
Why not just use the real thing at this point?
>>
macOS isn't free as in beerdom
>>
>>100166709
It's Linux. You get the choice between an ugly macOS clone (GNOME) or an ugly Windows clone (KDE).
>>
xfce and thunar don't have this problem. no screen tearing either.

I miss the days before everyone lost their hope for desktop linux and started taking it up the ass from gnome/gtk
>>
>>100166709
UI/UX have no use case.
>>
>>100166709
When I last tried Ubuntu, you weren't able to drag files from the file manger to the desktop. It's horrifying how any of this could ever be considered 'release quality'.
>>
>>100166709
Why is not drag worked? I never use such operating system!
>>
>>100166882
Back in 18.04, the Ubuntu devs had to come up with their own hacky solution to re-add desktop icons since the upstream GNOME devs removed them altogether.
>>
Just use Linux Mint with the Cinnamon DE.
Nobody recommends Ubuntu anymore, certainly not with the GNOME desktop.
For some server or something sure, ubuntu minimal but for a desktop, Linux Mint, with the elegant Cinnamon DE, is the premier linux distribution.
>>
>>100166709
>Why not just use the real thing at this point?
Because it sucks even more.
>>
>>100167046
Use something with KDE, it's better.
>>
>>100166919
ESL.
>>
>>100166796
I unironically miss Unity. It was comfy, and ultimately sold me on having a left-sided dock. I hope cosmic brings some of the comfiness back.

>>100167331
Not explanation.
>>
>>100167331
Better an ESL than a Linux luser

It crashing after attempting to drag it to the desktop is the cherry on the shit sundae.

Could have said Ubuntu mate, before you went full retard

I miss unity

It finally became usable then they switched to gnome which became way worse.

I should stop being lazy and finally write a DE it deserves in Java. I'm the best Java developer in Finland. My other ongoing project is thumbnails on jar (jax files)

Also, who wants to use a computer with only 8gigs of RAM?
>>
>>100166709
Ubuntu had something with Unity7, they were at their peak, they were popular and recognized everywhere, TV shows, movies, and even Anime, you would see people working on NASA, or Disney and Hollywood using Unity7 on their computers, and they had to fucking ruin it all, they had to let Red Hat and Gnome bully them.
Dumb retards

the gnome workflow is unironically superior

Let's be real, if it was KDE you'd say it was a crappy clone of windows
>>
>>100166791
GNOME 1.0 was already more fully featured than explorer.exe at the time. No idea even what your post was supposed to mean

Just today I decided to test drive linux again, mainly because of Fedora 40 coming out. It worked fine on my main system, but was barely chugging on a lower end machine. Don't mind gnome for it's minimalism. Scaling options were only 100% and 200% both looked like shit.

Tried Ubuntu LTS. Visual glitches errywhere like low res icon background in dock, couldn't find scaling options at all.

Manjaro wouldn't even boot, maybe I fucked up something in rufus.

wtf is going on with linux anyways these days? and why are top distros on distrowatch geared for low end machines with shit like xfce as default? Do freetards use anything other than second hand semen encrusted chinkpads from 2000?
>>
>>100170059
get kubuntu, remove firefox snap and install deb, then install flatpak
or just use mint
>>
>>100170059
wait, gnome Wayland still lacks fractional scaling???
hahahahahahahahaa
>>
>>100167342
Unity is still around, but now it's developed by the community instead of Canonical.
>>
>>100170187
>install this bloat, then attempt to debloat it and then cope
literally wintoddler tier advice
>>
>>100170298
It's unfortunate but that's the best result you're gonna get. There may be distros that do it for you but they're small and relatively unknown, e.g. Tuxedo
>>
>>100170332
The correct way is to install gentoo, you can install your bloated environment on gentoo too, it's not magic.
>>
>>100170351
Sounds like way more work for no benefit.
>>
>>100166709
I unironically like gnome.
>>
>>100170410
the benefit is that the only bloat I have is the one I installed by myself, retard.
>>
>>100170426
and this helps me how?
>>
>>100170445
you don't have to be a distrohopping nigger who keeps suggesting most retarded windows tier shit like
>just run this debloat script bro
>>
>>100170458
debloating shit in 3 minutes is quicker and more practical than spending hours reading documentation to set up gentoo, is it not?
>>
I'm surprised Shuttleberg is still involved with Ubuntu. I thought he would have given up by now.
>>
>>100170187
Alternatively: install Ubuntu, embrace the snap, and just be productive.
>>
>>100170507
>muh 3 minutes
you post on 4chan
>>
>>100170059
KDE unfortunately is the only semi sane choice now. Gnome is plain bad, for example folder with lots of pictures it has no placeholders so when it starts displaying thumbnails it seemingly spawns files out of nowhere and there is no reliable way to click any point in scroll bar to jump there because the folder dimensions keep changing. It's so full of retarded noob glitches like that. Kde is ugly with shit defaults and krashes a lot but at least nails the basics. Xfce is better than gnome and more stable than KDE but no scaling no HDR etc
>>
>>100166882
Gnome doesn't have desktop files, this is actually the best part of Gnome as it forces zoomers and boomers to stop treating the file system like a bucket and actually use the fucking folders they are meant to.
>>100169617
Unironically based, I used to shit on this guy but like there are anti-patterns there are anti-features, though he should just have accepted they lost the tray icons battle.
>>
>>100167586
maybe 11 years ago you have a point. First of all, the Linux Mint MATE distro is way nicer than Ubuntu MATE.
Secondly, Ubuntu forces you into SNAPS
I was a big Ubuntu fan btw until Mint came out. I wasn't a fan of Unity, I thought it was a macfag DE, I've tried everything and Cinnamon is the best.
That's why in the current year, believe it or not, Linux Mint is the most popular distro.
Also... remember all the haters 10 years ago, "if Ubuntu came out with Cinnamon flavor Mint would die overnight"
guess what, they did, nobody fuckin uses it, Linux Mint is so much fucking better because of
>update manager
>redpilled on Israel
>freedom from SNAPS
