Provided that there is nothing holding the community down, the "charming" and "grassroots" parts can just leave and don't have to attempt to prop up a knockoff from the ground up.
Linux has the GPL to assist it, so any splinter community can just continuously leech off of most of the effort provided by the soulless corporation provided they are savvy enough to filter out anything that would tie them to that corporation.
