Lenovo's latest ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 laptop is set to be the first to use the

>new LPCAMM2 memory form factor,

the successor to SODIMM sticks.

While Lenovo has largely focused on the AI performance of its new laptop, which is equipped with an Intel Core Ultra CPU and Nvidia RTX 3000 Ada GPU, the company also noted that its device was the first in the world to use the LPCAMM2 memory standard.

>LPCAMM2 uses 64 percent less space than SODIMM and 61 percent less active power, according to Lenovo.

This is thanks to it being based on LPDDR5X memory instead of regular DDR5.

Designed specifically for laptops, the LPCAMM2 standard actually has its origins in tech developed by Dell. Simply termed CAMM (Compression Attached Memory Module), it first debuted as a proprietary type of memory in Dell's Precision 7670 in 2022.

However, in 2023 the PC giant donated its intellectual property to JEDEC, the organization that standardizes memory technologies. CAMM became LPCAMM2 (Low-Power Compression Attached Memory Module) in September 2023 when JEDEC finally confirmed its specifications. Samsung promptly announced plans to produce LPCAMM2 sticks, and

>claimed they would have 50 percent more performance and 70 percent more efficiency than their SODIMM-based predecessors.

Plus, LPCAMM2 can offer dual-channel memory without requiring a second module.

its quite fast

dude that thing uses DDR3 lol

the steam deck already has the LPDDR5 dual channel RAM chud

modern lenovos had abandoned this resolution

So, how is this shape more space-efficient than just a rectangle? This looks like it was invented by some stupid cunt with a chip on his shoulder. Fuck you.
>>
>>100171428
i bet there's a prototype somewhere
>>
>>100171436
Apparantly (cannot confirm yet) that single board can be dual channel, other than that... wtf is that shape!? indeed!
>>
>>100171436
it has very low height compared with laptop dimms, and allows way better latency and bandwidth
>>100170793
just curious, are they compatible with the original dell camm?
>>
>>100171436
it's more space-efficient than TWO rectangles
>>
>>100173853
It's not one or the other. I'm complaining about the shape, the way it was designed. You seem to have trouble understanding cause and effect.
>>
>>100174169
The shape is just what ram usually looks like on a board soldered down

Instead they just drop it on its own board with a big land grid array interconnect I assume.
Why it has the hump is because they moved the memory power regulation to the card itself
>>
>>100171436
Tards will never be happy
>sodimm has limitations
>laptop vendors start soldering ram
>/g/ cries
>one vendor makes a new format
>gets with jedec to make it standard
>other vendors use new standard instead of soldering ram
>/g/ tard: " but it looks weird"
>>
>>100174415
>won't anybody think of those poor manufacturers? Can't you be happy with this goofy-shaped PCB that's going to make motherboard design even more complicated?
Fuck's the matter with you?
>>
dell precisions have had this shit for like two years
gj chongnovo
>>
>>100174665
No, Dell has had a proprietary solution. This stuff will be available third party like any other ram
>>
>>100170793
>LPCAMM2
I believe dell designed it specifically with the goal of making it an open standard so it would get adopted.
Which is good.
>>
>>100174633
>with this goofy-shaped PCB that's going to make motherboard design even more complicated?
If they wanted to make board design simple, they would just solder
>Fuck's the matter with you?
The fuck is the matter with you?
Manufacturers are throwing a bone to people who want to upgrade while satisfying demand for better performance and battery life, but anon who is apparently an expert in board layout says it ain't good enough and that SODIMMs are apparently easier despite the fact they cannot get the speed up
>>
>>100174868
Sodimme are actually worse For board design because the memory contacts on the soc are like 2-3cm long and the memory slot is like 7cm long
All the length matched traces need to fan out and that takes up literally tons of board space that you can't even put anything on because of noise.
This shit you should be able to mount closer to the soc and redesign the soc pads to make minimal length match adjustments
>>
>>100171399
yeah the news is that CAMM is socketed
>>
>>100174843
I guess so

>>100174796
DELL is identical in physical dimensions I think, the electrical differences can be whatever so there is no actual compatibility between DELL and others, they kinda like invented a form factor so to speak
