The king of distros is back and it officially drops today. Are you ready?

Oh shit, it has already been 16 years since the tag team of Canonical and Poettering ruined open source forever?
Time sure flies

When will Ubuntu fix their terrible fucking theming and icons? How is the icon of their shitty ubuntu app store acceptable in 2024? Also when will they fix snap performance issues and bugs?
>>
Cuck distro. The only people I have seen using it are,

1) boomer semi-power users who dual boot because they're too dumb to switch to linux / VMs
2) literal pajeets from work who can't tell the difference between a file extension and file content
>>
Ubuntu is cringe. They have literal P*nyshit as the VLC example screenshot in their snap store.
>>
>>100175718
Every single professor or person involved in academia that uses linux uses Ubuntu from what I've seen. To be fair they are usually not techy people and would probably struggle a lot more with any other distro compared to Ubuntu that "just werks" and it's main line of releases is the LTS that doesn't need any tinkering or updates for two+ school years. It's just objectively shit if you have any knowledge and wouldn't mind a little bit of tinkering, there's zero reason to use it an intermediate level when you can just run Fedora/openSUSE/Debian.
>>
>>100175718
3) people who want shit that just werks but doesn't like Apple
>>

And you can get non free blobs in 15 seconds with Fedora/openSUSE or any distro that doesn't have them with two lines in terminal. As I said, Ubuntu is great as a beginners distro, but the moment you are no longer scared of terminal it loses any use cases.
>>

PulseAudio was actually a step in the right direction, works on most setups, and the idea is being perfected with PipeWire (the only good thing Red Hat has forced on this ecosystem). SystemD is a whole different ballgame. No one asked for it, other init systems were working just fine, and they still do. SystemD spreads its tentacles throughout an entire installation, while PulseAudio just helps the average user gain more flexibility for routing and playing back audio. Canonical has to eat shit because of Red Hat all the time, and we lost promising projects like Upstart and Unity because of them. Mind you, I don't like either of these entities, but if I was forced to choose between the two of them for hostile dictator, I'd prefer Canonical. At least they lube ya up before jamming it in.
>>
>>100177357
The initial push for PulseAudio was so god damn bad that even Poettering himself admitted it was a mistake but it set the dangerous precedent that it was now fine to ship completely broken bullshit in open source as long as you promise that it'll maybe be good at some undetermined point in the future
>>
>>100176738
So they didn't fix it? it was supposed to be fine in Gnome 46.
>>
>>100175849
I don't know why people like you find it a necessity to set up something that requires more technical proficiency when they both do the exact same thing.

because ubuntu snaps are dogshit and genuinely bad, like steam and firefox have openly said the snaps are shit? removing snaps takes more effort than it does adding proprietary codecs in fedora/opensuse

microsoft has literally never copied anything of importance from KDE or GNOME or any linux distro, if they are taking inspiration from anyone for W10 and W11 it's from Android/iOS/macOS, pretty much every single major Google/Apple/MS ecosystem is doing the same shit ol apple did with flat round simplified shit.

Not only GNOME as a DE is shit and the devs go out of their way to keep ruining what works but every single DE built on top of GTK is tainted too for the same reason, everything is always breaking and some of the shit needs to be accepted to play nice with the GTK base
Why the hell big distros and almost every other DE choose to use or follow this thing that feels like a niche autistic experiment in the vein of Pantheon desktop or something?
I used to Goddamn hate KDE now look where I am. Soon they'll find a way to kill KDE and Lxqt too and force us to use their corpses instead.

Your bullshit narrative doesn't hold, Ubuntu is less noob friendly than Mint, yet people have no beef with Mint, just with your piece of shit corporate-run Linux that tries to go against the principles of FOSS. there is no universal answer to this. personally i need to have a very good reason to upgrade before EOL.

this is a good thing, not being part of the mentally deranged FOSS tranny cult is why I use ubuntu and why ubuntu is king

Trinity DE is also nice, will probably try that over the latest Kubuntu.

They can do whatever they like, I only post advice if someone asks for advice.

>Having professional support is bad because...? Not having the existence of your whole OS hinged on the fact that some tranime watching neckbearded pedo has a lot of free time and hasn't been kicked out of his mom's basement yet is bad because...?
I'm on Slackware not some tranime distro. Run by Pat aka The Man, the Legend. Security updates every day since 1993. Stable releases every couple of years, which is all I need. (There is a testing "current" branch as well for bleeing edge). No systemd, complete control over my system, minimalism.
And it will never die. Slack is Linux.

>I take it that you're using Trisquel and don't have a single piece of software or firmware that isn't licensed under GPL installed on your computer, right? Certainly you wouldn't want to go against FOSS principles by making posts to a website with a proprietary, closed source backend after interacting with captcha and going though cloudflare.
I'm not a Libre autist. Like Aristotle said, "some vices miss what it's right because they are deficient, others because they are excessive, in feelings or actions, while virtue finds and chooses the mean". It's all a matter of degree. No binary blobs whatsoever autism is extremist, running a corpo-cucked distro that ADMITTED TO RUNNING SPYWARE is the other toxic end of the spectrum.

There is talk to make nautilus the file picker which would presumably get rid of this issue, but it is still stupid because why wouldn't it be possible to call the thumbnailer when browsing in the filepicker?

Fucking Gnome still doesn't let you set view type on a per folder basis. This is something Windows and mac have had for decades.
