FYI: if you have a chance to go to a local meetup, do it. Especially if there's booze. Hookups at keyboard meetups are legendary. Keyboard hobbyists have a very refined sensuality and amazingly dexterous fingers
>>
Splits are kind of low status because they out you as a data entry monkey
>>
>>100181760
I'll let you have wax, but polishing is aesthetic. "care" and "maintenance" are in this case ideological categories being wrongly applied to make it morally acceptable—if you could think of polishing as simply "making it extra shiny", you'd call it gay. Or you'd trust your gut and you wouldn't, which is the point—you accept fussing for aesthetics as grown-up in some instances, not others. The thinking is slightly confused because you refuse to accept aesthetics as something real, and try instead to make moral arguments free of aesthetics.

I am not asking you to accept gay keyboards as good—don't distrust your judgements. But give up the ideological framework laid over it, because that framework makes your argument only seem better-reasoned, while it is actually more easily discarded.
>>
>>100181983
I think I understand where you're coming from. Why is the pursuit of aesthetics acceptable in some contexts but not others? Why must the stainless steel appliances be free of fingerprints but the keyboard cannot sound appealing? Really it all boils down to the fact that I'm and asshole and I'm right and everyone else is wrong.
>>
>>100181889

My keyboard started sometimes double-typing a key (apparently it's called chattering). I installed a program to detect it and stop that from happening, but I don't really feel comfortable having a keylogger running
Any other way to fix it? Do I just need to clean it?
>>
>>100186553
Desolder it and clean it, lube at while you are at it too if possible
>>
>>100186553
If your board supports QMK you can just increase the debounce time. If not then either try cleaning or replace the offending switch.
>>
>>100186570
It's like 5 different keys that all started doing it at the same time
>>
>>100186553
Is it a mechanical keyboard? If so, just desolder and replace the switch, maybe with a key that you never ever use, like Insert or Scroll Lock. If it's a membrane board, you're kinda fucked. Could be a bad trace, which you can potentially fix
>>
>>100186576
Random or is it all along one row or column?
>>
>>100186578
It's always the same keys but spread all over the place, I've seen it happen with I, M, W, Y (German keyboard so that's in the place of Z), and L
>>100186577
Yeah it's a mechanical. I guess I'll look up how to desolder and order some new switches too
>>
>>100186588
If you're a newbie to desoldering, get a pump like https://www.amazon.com/EDSYN-The-Original-Deluxe-SOLDAPULLT/dp/B006GOKVKI/, some leaded solder (if your keyboard was soldered by an OEM, it's likely using non-leaded solder which is a bitch to remove, so you mix it with leaded solder to make it easier), and a cheap iron like a Pinecil or something.
>>
>>100185684
i wouldn't put them on my alphas naturally but its quite satisfying to hit a heavy enter key, i also put em on my capslock and esc key and my other modifiers/f keys are heavier than standard but i cant remember what now maybe 100 or something i only did it for a goof but liked it so kept it that way.
>>
>>100186606
> if your keyboard was soldered by an OEM, it's likely using non-leaded solder which is a bitch to remove
ok that's why it was so annoying to desolder, I wondered about that
>>

be careful, I tried doing this and ended up spending over $1000, got sucked into the "hobby"

I'm looking for a 75% or higher keyboard that could replicate the feeling of an old Thinkpad Laptop keyboard: compact low profile layout with barely any spacing between the keycaps. I'm willing to compromise and I'd prioritize the lack of spacing above all else. I've read around and heard of these:
Kalih Chocs, 96keys, RS96, Duck lightsaver, zz96, GSX96, mehkee96, welfare96, YMD96. I'm not particularly knowledgeable on keyboards so if anyone here could potentially suggest some switches or keycaps, or whatever else contributes to replicating an old Thinkpad Laptop I'd be extremely grateful.

>>
>>100189852
So what you're telling me is that there's no worthwhile board I could get for $100?
>>
>>100189885

>>
>>100189885
I don't know, maybe. $100 is poverty budget. Keychron V series (plastic) is the standard sort of thing in that range. Youtubers are hyping Rainy75, which is full aluminum for 100ish. Maybe that'll be good, I don't know.

neeb a new keyboard
das keyboard 4 professional (mx browns) any good for lasting me 8+ years? build quality? QC? gay?
>>
>>100192660
my das keyboard 4 lasted me exactly 8 years before two of the mx browns started dropping actuations, then I opened it up and replaced them with new mx browns—good as new.

>build quality
plastic bottom housing on mine, but compared to all the other plastic pieces of shit at the nearby conputer store (corsair, redragon, logitech, etc) it feels more solid and sounds better than 98% (the most expensive razer felt ok. I went in the other day and clicked the keys on all of them)

keycaps are ass, replace with good thick pbt caps immediately and it's like an upgrade. (maybe they've changed caps since then, or that version is different, but mine were flimsy and sounded bad)

>QC

Don't forget to replace the caps. And if you're a solder master be sure to spring swap and lube those browns after a while (I never did because I was a noob, but you should). Good luck making the costar stabs suck less

They're good, but keebox shenpo are a bit nicer and thicker—those are my new favorite. But they don't do WoB, nor OEM profile.

Ducky caps are quite a lot better than the stock daskeyboard caps. I'm not sure if there are thicker OEM options, but I haven't looked around to find out either.

does anyone have experience with wooden keycaps?
I'm building a keyboard for work (woodwork + CAD) and I love the look of them, but I'd imagine they have drawbacks compared to standard PBT
>>
>>100195864
I imagine they would be quite heavy. You'd probably want switches with heavier springs to compensate. I'd definitely lube too since there's a greater chance that a cap may be unbalanced and thus have an off-center press force. What wood are you going to be using?

Rosewood or walnut, medium dark brownish hue with a black case should look nice.
I guess I should just buy a couple wood keys first and test them on my home keyboard (cherry mx clear switches)
is there a switch that would function the same as clears but with more actuating force to compensate for the weight?

>past the point of diminishing returns
This describes literally everything even an inch beyond poverty living. There are diminishing returns past the bare minimum of anything. To even think in these terms is a poverty mindset.

$100 is not a lot of money these days. Luckily there are some good budget boards now; but you're not gonna have a wealth of choice. What you get is a decent plastic keyboard. Not bad, nothing to get excited about either.

I bought the Akko Tokyo World Tour ACR59 keyboard and never looked back!

I didn't even ONCE look back and wonder what it would be like to have gotten a different keyboard. Not a single regret. This thing is fucking BEAUTIFUL. I have it running a sweet sakura pink with the see through keycap replacements and it is a fucking dream of a keyboard.

It's not loud, it's not extrmely muted but it is satisfying af to type with and play with. Granted most of my gaming is done with a xbox elite 2 controller and the only thing to complain about is the lack of arrow keys so I can't play maplestory out of the box, but that's not a big deal at all as I play better games with my godly rig.

This keyboard is fucking magnificent and the little Mt.Fuji scene on my spacebar is always such a joy to look at. I have never taken better care of anything and it would shatter me to let it get dirty, ever. I love this little invention and I even got it on sale when it was like 30% off during Christmas.

Fucking amazing keyboard and it even came with some extra switches which I haven't used (I got the Akko Air switches).

Perfect keyboard for me and it fits on my monitor's stand/feet so I can just clear my desk up when I need to eat or whatever.

I dropped $400 on a grade A refurbished T480. A 6 year old Thinkpad. You can buy B grade T480s for half that. I just wanted the plastic to look close to brand new as possible.

I'm just the type of person that has to spoil themselves, you know what rich folks are like.

I can upgrade everything on it except the processor and board and I can repaste as needed. The keyboard is good, but I can frankenmod in a much older keyboard with deeper travel.

Is it worth it for the keyboard if all you want is good typing experience or have I gone off the deep end and into something too niche?

What is the cheapest keyboard that 'just werks'?
I'm looking for something at or between 60% – 80% form factor. Primary use will be for general typing and web browsing/navigation. I do not plan to use it for gaming. What is the cheapest keyboard I can buy that won't crap out on me? 100 CAD or less, reliability top priority. Prefer to buy on Aliexpress, Amazon, or Ebay.
Features that are appreciated, but not required:

I love my alumaze <3.
I like the heft of the aluminum.
The plastic of the switches is more noticeable now.
The keys kind of shake around, is there anything to keep the overall switch+keycap more stable?
Or am I going to have to invest in 100 percent aluminum switches to prevent keycap wobble?

Probably minimal difference.
The audio feedback versus silent tactile feedback might contribute to perceived difference.

Yes, this is the future.

At some point there will be an actuator that sizes up your hand, or keeps a constant force feed back on your finger location, or moves with the finger.

Cyborg has these keypads, but they require too much adjustment, like I said, eventually you will have some sort of tactile spring+servo mechanism that will keep it in balance automatically.

QUESTION FOR KEYBOARDERS
where can i find a mechanical keyboard WITHOUT these two attributes:
>loud click clack
>sensitive keys that press too easily
>>
>>100243424
One that you can just buy straight up? A Realforce or a Leopold or something with silent switches if they're available.
Or you can just get any hotswap board and put silent switches in it yourself.
>>
>>100243424
>>100243520
Oh, and do you mean they actuate too easily like at the top of the key press or the key press itself is too light? Because then you'll want to look at some silent switches with heavier springs in them.
>>
>>100243537
the one i have currently is driving me crazy because if i slightly rest my hand on any key it presses. it's also a pain when typing because mistakes are more likely to turn into ewartikhjwajerhtewat garbage
>>
>>100243631
So you meant they're too light then. I don't know if I'd like to recommend heavy switches straight up since I don't know just how light the ones you're using are since then it might be a huge disparity and be annoying and uncomfortable for another reason.
What board are you currently using if you know?
>>
Why are people so into linear switches?
>>
>>100244142
They're not my favorite but I can kinda see the appeal, bottoming out can be fun. Still a bit monotonous for me personally, tactile feedback is just great.

>>
>>100243424
Sounds like you need some brown switches bruh.

Fellow anons, I want to upgrade from Kailh browns (standard). I'm considering three options, please advice.
1. Gateron G Pro 3.0 Switch (blue)
2. Kailh Speed Pro Heavy (navy)

>>100244212
Ofc. No different than drilling a hole in an iphone to access the hidden headphone jack.
>>
>>100244637
What's your third option?
Anyway, those Gateron switches will have roughly the same tactility and bottom out force as the Kailh browns, probably a bit lighter. The tactility is also at a later time in the key press.
Those Speed Pro Heavy Navies will be far heavier, which might be fun for typing but only for short periods of time unless you're certain you'd be able to handle that claimed 100g tactility + 100g bottom out throughout the day. Just saying, but most people don't have hammer fingers, but you can try them out if you want.
You could also try out switches like Clickiez, Gateron Melodics or U4Ts too if you're wanting to dip into more tactile switches. Just saying too, but heavier switches often mask a bit of their tactility from how heavy they are, so that's also something to consider.

>>100246067
If you just want loud switches there's quite a bit. Personally I don't mind them, but some people go absolutely crazy over Cherry MX Blues for being "rattly". I've heard Kailh Box Jades are also quite loud for modern switches. Of course most of that goes down the shitter if your keyboard is stuffed full of foam, so beware of that.
That said you could also consider picking up a Unicomp Model M keyboard, but that'd be more expensive than just trying out some switches, but would basically be guaranteed to be loud straight out of the box. You could go listen to some sound tests on youtube for all these, especially the Model M.
>>
>>100246430
I have one and I'd say it's pretty solid for the price, basically didn't feel like modding it at all compared to my two Q6s and Q6 Pro.
I think the Gateron Jupiter Banana switches it comes with are alright, if they're available as an option that is. They're around medium tactility and weighting but you could pick up some cheaper linear switches like Milky Yellows to see if you like how linears feel. Personally I like clicky switches too and I enjoyed how Gateron Melodic and Kailh clicky switches sounded and felt in it.
I said it in an earlier thread, but getting Keychrons barebones IMO is basically not worth it. The keycaps and switches included is worth way more than the $20 USD you'd save, at least on the Q series of boards, especially if you want to try out some switches and taller profile keycaps. $20 USD is an absolute steal for both switches and keycaps.

absolutely, if you get a full aluminum board. The way the aluminum heats up allows it to dry properly. If you've ever compared dishes vs plastic dishes in the dishwasher you'll know plastic doesn't get hot and therefore doesn't dry.

Electronics can get wet as long as they aren't running. But they have to dry properly before you turn them on again, or you're fucked.

Guess for now all you can do is try and clean what you can reach then test it. If it's still not responding then you're probably just going to have to do the pain in the ass disassembly and try cleaning the board with some IPA and pray, or buy a new one. Gonna have to weigh your options if it gets to that point.
