But I would play JRPG for story and not combat anyway. Using a fire pokemon on an ice pokemon would make me not use the ice pokemon or use a move that counters your fire pokemon. (I prefer FLIPS as it generates a new fully patched ROM instead of overwriting the ROM I am patching.) However, sometimes you need a different patcher for the patches which use the .xdelta filetype. Frankly, a patched ROM that changes the game should legally be allowed as you aren't distributing the vanilla game, but I don't make the laws. It would also be better as people wouldn't need to search the vanilla game that Nintendo doesn't want you to download.
