Why is the image size limitations on 4chan so arbitrarily low? Why hasn't the size cap changed over time to reflect the improvements in Internet speed and cost for storage that make larger images less impactful?
>>
what kinds of images can you not upload with the current limits?
>>
Admittedly this is actually larger than what I'd consider a good modern maximum size for this site.

There are a lot of boards. From an admin point of view, it makes sense to keep storage costs low. Since there's an exact finite maximum amount of threads per board at any given time, and because every thread has an image cap, the storage of 4chan never has to be upgraded. Why fix what isn't broken?

Phoneposters. This should HOPEFULLY be remedied as AVIF and hardware acceleration for it gains mass adoption.

The reason 4chan can't ignore them is because they make up the bulk of all ad revenue since most are too stupid to block ads.

because you're a freeloader who doesnt pay for a pass but demands handouts for free.
YOURE the problem

I pay for TWO passes.

I've never had any problem and I don't see any point in posting 10MB pictures here

Mostly because people are stupid.

Not going to change. Best bet is to fire up a chan on the platform of your choice and set the file type and size limits to your preference.

The number of images 4chan might be expected to store at any one time is theoretically unbounded ever since they added the internal 2-week archive on most boards. Granted 4chan is trending down in popularity not up but still, it could happen that they suddenly have to store twice as many images relatively suddenly.

I honestly don't understand why it's so high. 4 mb is overkill for most images, and doesn't make people trying to be somewhat smart with their images. People post big pngs all the time and bloated jpegs.
In these times of increasing bandwidth costs I'd reduce the maximum file sinze in an instant. It should be max 1 mb. And honestly only jpeg and gifs allowed, no png.

not even civitai wants that and 4chinz isn't anything similar

How about an entire movie ?
>>
>>100192118
I'm willing to bet the archive has a secret storage cap as a contingency for that kind of situation

no

not while gifs are still a thing
>>
>>100192656
oh shit, I can't believe I correctly guessed what it was as I watched the opening with the storybook, I haven't seen that shitpost of a movie in years
That's not the full movie, though. Could it be fit into a 3.99MB webm at 160x90px?

4chan will never accept AVIF. Maybe JPEG XL
>>
>>100194118
One of those is getting hardware acceleration.
