Interestingly the iPad is getting binned on the Performance CPU cores, but keeping the full GPU count, while Macbooks get binned on the GPU. I wonder what Apple's going to with the M4 Macbooks.

The problem is people are mixing up the word "faster" with "the speed of", but they are two different things.

For example:
100% the speed of 2GHz = 2GHz
1x the speed of 2GHz = 2GHz

100% FASTER than 2GHz = 4GHz
1x FASTER than 2GHz = 4GHz
>>
>>100359636
faster and the speed of is the same thing when dealing with increases/positive though. -100% the speed of would be the same as 100% slower
>>
>>100359771
Not entirely. Things get interesting when you get below 100%.

Another example:
50% the speed of 2GHz = 1GHz
.5x the speed of 2GHz = 1GHz

50% FASTER than 2GHz = 3GHz
.5x FASTER than 2GHz = 3GHz
>>
Wonder how the 3 performance cores for base will perform vs 4 for 1tb version. Logically thermals will cripple the larger one faster.

Yeah and out of the next gen APUs releasing, it's at the bottom. It will beat out current chips, sure, but for a next generation chip they are leapfrogging, not impressive. Disclaimer is that TOPs measurement isn't uniform but given that Strix Point is getting a beefy GPU and 50 TOPs NPU and Lunar Lake is getting 100+ TOPs combined from its NPU and GPU and even the Qualcomm X chips coming out have 45 TOPs. Apple once again proving they definitively fumbled their lead with Siri and other uses of ML.
>>

That turned out to have like 50-80W TDP. Also going by the rest of their claims, I wouldn't be surprised if they meant fp8 performance.
>>
>>100361531
Taking SA's claims at face value at all without evidence is folly given their track record. The chip is being released this month anyways so it won't take long to verify and judge if the claim has merit or not.
>>100361374
GPU easily. Normies don't care enough about performance on that front to make it worth it on the lowest end chip. You could probably take away an entire equivalent of a Nvidia SM/AMD CU/Intel Slice in Apple's GPU design and only enthusiasts will notice it. That silicon is better off spent giving more than 2 display support, better handling of stuff like Displayport daisy chaining and ALLM on HDMI and more I/O support with USB handling especially with lower standards of USB not working at correct speeds. I have no clue what all that die space inside the display controller is used for when Apple are missing features like that and their display handling is one of the worst in the industry. Same with IO, there is no excuse to be that stingy on USB ports and etc.

>Is it a fun format computer ?
It's a device that mostly lives in the couch, and occasionally gets taken on trips.
It's a device that's pretty instant on.
There's no waiting for it to boot, or even waiting for it to load programs.

The parents use it for web browsing at home.
And on trips it does email duty.
(At home, the parents use the computer for emails.)

If you're mostly infront of your computer, or take a laptop on trips, then you're less likely to get any use out of a tablet... Unless you want to do some web browsing when on the toilet ?

>>100361825
It's on iGPUs from Intel and AMD and works on more displays than Apple can ever dream of. Nothing explains Apple's die space usage for their display controllers unless they are explicitly throwing away transistors to lower power consumption by making fixed functioned silicon other vendors make adaptive.

>>100364483
Eh, keep in mind, it is a tiny chip, so while it looks relatively large, the space is likely much less than what others use on their die for the core GPU shit about twice the size.

Don't know if that translates to getting more reading done as compared to using an e-book though.

A friend used an iPad as their only method of taking notes though university, so they are definitely capable devices.

Well, you know.
Rent-free, and all that.

>hurr arm is a meme
All other factors being equal, RISC yields higher performance than CISC. It was never a meme. Now it's typically in the 1.5-2x range, so not a knockout performance or efficiency gain. Especially when other factors can be different thereby negating the advantage. But it's there.

And that comes from someone who wishes Apple still shipped Intel MBPs for the backwards compatibility with x86 VMs.

This is fake I do fat unity renders on my m2 max and it looks as good as the day I took it home. This image is what happens when you spill something on it and in true Indian fashion you use a blow dryer on it.

I had an orange ipod. Some shithead stole it.

I honestly don't understand the use case for ipad pro, if you're a pro then why wouldn't you use a mac. I guess the single case is professional illustrators but I don't think they make up enough of a market. Just buy a standard ipad for like $400 and it does everything you would want to do on the pro.

It can generate images much faster.
>>100366662
It's simple.
>do you work with paper like some lawyer or doctor or writer?
It's the best device for you.
>do you do any sort of drawing
It's the best device for you.
>do you work with video/audio
It's a very interesting portable option.

For everyone else? Yeah, it's probably too much.

Just did bumpers for 3 sets of 5 reps bruh. Instead you're jerking off to a processor change that no one cares about and no one can tell the difference, bruh.

I believe iPad Pro is aimed at artist faggots, like designers, musicians and amateur movie faggots.

it's good for students as well, but they don't need the pro version since the base $350 model does everything
>>
>>100366662
>pro
There's usually some differentiation.
Currently it look to be:
>ProMotion technology
Faster updates when responding to things.
Slower updates when they can get away with it to extend battery life.
..or at least, that's what it used to mean.
>Nano-texture display glass
Mite be cool.
>ProRes
Good if you deal with that file format, I guess.
>TrueDepth camera system
Huh.
Is this the same tech as they have on the front facing camera?
>Thunderbolt support

What the fuck is this shit? Did apple fire their graphic designers?
>>
>>100366859
I mean I'm not saying it's not a nice device, I guess I just don't understand normies enough to understand settling for a locked down operating system. but for people who arent tech heavy, make lots of money and need something portable it kinda makes sense desu.
>>
>>100367244
"Is this OS locked down or not?" is simply not the question I ask when looking at a new device. What matters is letting me do what I buy it for. Some Windows shittop can have unlocked bios that let me undervolt it but the thing is still useless for my needs.
>>
>>100357921
n3b a bit lacking but they still cant introduce an m4 mac mini until they m4 or m5 ify their laptops fucking tim apple man is shipping
>>
>>100366662
pretty sure it's for artists in the same way a pick-up truck is for lawn contractors
>>
is it just me or has the m3/4 been sorta a step back compared to the m2 besides muh graphics?
less cores, runs hotter, something about shittier bandwidth (can’t remember)
I think apple realized the m2 was pretty good future proof and had to dial it back a bit beside muh 3nm chip
>>
>>100368208
Just the opposite, kinda. M2 is M1 pushed to the limit of the node for bigger numbers, so it's less efficient for minimal benefits. M3 is basically what M2 should've been … but it's also on a stupidly expensive node, hence Apple likely tried to move on as fast as possible and M4 is what M3 should've been. At least based on their almost worthless numbers.
>>
all that I got from the announcement is that they're comparing the M4 to M2 and pretending that M3 doesn't exist. almost all of the metrics they said are compared to M2. which means that without even looking at benchmarks from third-party vendors and/or tech reviewers, the improvement from M3 is minimal at best. So the rule of always waiting for an odd number version of a microprocessor or SoC still holds. See you in 2 years macfags.
Oh, and prepare to get BTFO'd by Snapdragon's new chips.
>>
>>100368381
They are comparing it to the latest iPad. They skipped M3 there.
>>
Is the current gen Macbook Pro enough for video editing, or is the Max needed? How much of a difference will there be?
>>
>>100368208
M4 is M3 with two extra performance cores and slightly better node
>>
>>100369749
Even M1 Air is enough, whether more is needed depends on how much you are willing to wait for it to encode.
>>
>>100369749
I have an M1 Mac Mini and it renders 1080^60 just fine, almost as fast as my previous RX 590 hackintosh except it does it at like 45 watts. I've never actually needed to work with 4K before so it does what I need.
>>
>>100369782
>45 watts
M1 will never use that much energy, it maxes out at like 25W
>>
>>100369901
God damn. Why the hell does it need the 150W PSU?
>>
>>100369921
it doesn't. M1 is literally an iPad CPU. Apple probably uses that PSU because they enjoy over-engineering things.

also you need to power other stuff, like SSD, ports etc
>>
>>100369921
Probably were too late to change their contract and ended up with fuckloads. The whole mini body since the switch to ARM makes no sense. The thing could be much smaller without negatively affecting the cooling or noise.

they did on purpose
for example 2015 i7 macbook pro has cpu power limit set to 125w (45w chip) it overheats like crazy
