PSA for you autists.
Many of you probably have repressed trauma.
You can dismiss that as bullshit if you want, because you saw some tiktok girl talk about it and you probably think she's a bullshitter so it must be fake. Maybe she is, doesn't really matter.
Shit is real and a lot of you are fucked up because of it. You have social issues because you learned coping strategies for trauma. This is why you are the weirdo anti-social guy at work.
By coincidence, or maybe by design, most workplace environments prey on people like you.
Authority figures + critique and judgement = trauma trigger. You can pretend you are tough and I'm just talking bullshit, I'm sure that's working out great for you.
You can fix it, or just keep coping.
Now you know though.

Did you see the last thread when that anon came in and tried telling other anons how exercise is good for you and they were, almost unanimously, in disagreement because of their age, drinking habits and/or lifestyle, and how they’re apparently incapable of literally just being better??

Yeah, it’s marxist ideology: shame the strong for expressing their strength and encourage the weak to believe they are above the strong. The irony is in that the weak aren’t actually better, they’re just fooling themselves in order to preserve the ego, as the ego is all weak men have.

This is literally why we’re experiencing tough times: too many weak men.

It's just this "just lift bro" crap that is annoying.
It's just the latest consumerist trend, I am an old enough millennial to remember the days when lifting was niche, and now it has taken over everyone's free time.
Fine, go lift if you want. Just don't pretend it's the solution for everything.

What if I told you I don’t need fixing? What if I told you that everyone who tried to “fix” me was, and still is, responsible for said trauma?
What if I told you that despite trauma, I still have sound social skills and a high level of emotional intelligence?
What if I told you to just fuck off and not bother me when I’m working unless it’s important, because despite my trauma, I still prefer my own company instead of experiencing the feeling of utter contempt that contemporary beings are deserving of?

I wonder if it ever occurred to some people that sometimes the anti-social quiet guy isn’t just shy, and does indeed fucking hate people, and really just wants to be left alone and work? Why am i forced to acquiesce to the demands of overly-socialised social-media consuming tik tok addicts?

Eat shit & die, in that order (the order is important)

I didn't, all I saw was anons saying they work out and they know from experience that working out won't solve all your life problems. No one said that working out isn't good for you.

Geese I spend like 20 minutes a day walking and maybe another 15 minutes doing a couple freeweight exercises with the dumbells I keep under my desk.

I think this idea that exercise needs to take hours is why so many people don't do it. You don't need that much to be pretty fit.

Starting to get really frustrated with one of the members from another team. I think he's got me on speed dial and he's asking me shit he should really ask his team for. Yup. I've noticed it when you ask them a question on something technical. After they give you the bullshit 'do the needful' answer and you start pressing them for details. Most of the time they know literally nothing about what they're talking about.

You just get use to it and disassociate. This is the "collaborative" environment all C-suite and management were talking about.

What if you just ignore the depression?
>boohoo it is hard to get out of bed
Yeah so it is for people with chronic back pain who literally have no cure other than numbing themselves with drugs. Many of them just learn to live with the pain, it is literally just a broken circuit shooting pulses into your brain. Depression is not too different. Stop taking life so seriously, especially when you don't have kids. Just fuck around and do interesting stuff. Travel any time you can. Go on a trip through a fucking desert or something. Society was always shit, you don't deserve a girlfriend and no one owes you sex (outside prostitutes you paid for).

Im a sysadmin and we have a help desk full of people who are afraid of code, including simple scripting shit like powershell. They need to do really basic shit that can be completed in the blink of an eye, from scripts that i've already written and provided. However, because running the script might involve, you know, opening a powershell window first (to run as admin), or god forbid, involve editing variables, they just decide not to use them at all.

At this point im tempted to write a simple app to just... make a gui for the scripts so they won't be so fucking scared or lazy in the most retarded way possible. Im also 90% sure that this would be a complete waste of time as it would require them to change their ways. Also I hate my job.

cardio exercise has been shown in studies to reduce depression symptoms. one of the mechanisms is by causing your body to produce BDNF. low BDNF is becoming more popular of a theory to describe depression

if you are physically unhealthy you are going to be mentally unhealthy as well. theres no way around that

not really the thread for this (or maybe it is) but I was thinking of starting a side business building PCs. I don't expect much business, maybe one PC a month, but I like building them and it's a hobby for me. My business plan would just be to order the parts at the lowest price supplier every time someone wants me to build something and then I am fully transparent about the price of the parts and just put on a building / installation fee. I guess that would work, right? Just not clear what the fee would be in 2024..

$120k is like the minimum to own a home now without breaking the rules for what's financially healthy (IE they probably won't write a loan for you.)
Then if you don't buy whole foods wholesale you have to go to a grocery store/walmart which have crazy high markup that's exploded over the past four years so yeah that sounds about right.

You won't starve to death but you'll have periods where you have to share a house with another family and you won't be able to eat nice food etc.

No it's not, this map is not precise enough to extract anything meaningful out of it.

if you already have a degree and certs then you are still capable of getting a job as is. the reason why people go active duty is to pay for college.
if you go reserves you'll still get assigned an MOS and go to training, but if you happen to get a top secret clearance as part of your training then you can get a government contractor job and just do your one weekend a month for the reserves.

How do I fix it? I literally can't speak with people I don't know near me without making a massive effort. I was bullied hard in hs, I think I try to speak as little as possible so people won't feel like targeting me.

Listen here zoomers. Don't make the same mistakes I did. I'm in my late 30s with no job, no friends, no family, and no future. I made some dumb choices. Really dumb... I've basically thrown my whole life away from bad career decisions. I openly admit that I deserve to be as pathetic and miserable as I am. If this were a truly just world where everyone got what they deserved, then my situation would be even worse. People stupid enough to throw away that opportunities that I had don't even deserve to live. I urge you to do better.

My first job's salary was 55k a year, you take what you can get especially if times are rough. No one said you had to stay there but something is better than nothing. Start looking for a new position after 6 months there.

Salaries will always be shit here compared to US, but it's going to open up a lot more opportunities once you have some real experience on your resume.

>>100377787
That's the problem with faking it till you make it. I've had interviews where it was pretty much just a soft skills interview and basic stuff. Even leetcode interviews can be grinded. But an experienced person with a technology can easily come up with caveats or situations that expose someone faking or clearly not as familiar as they claim.

I don't know how others did this but in my resume back then I tried to clearly indicate which were the technologies I was intimately familiar with and which I only knew a little about.

My boss told me he almost didn't hire me because of how exhausted he was after the flood of "fake" applications, fake in the sense they say they are here in the usa but it's actually some indian in mumbai trying to trick the company into getting them a visa, he said I was the last person he screened because of how tiring it was.
>>
Guys, there is a company in the US (I'm a Eurofag) that I would really love to work for, because they do exactly the kind of shit that I do.
However because I estimate that it will still take me 1.5 years to finish my Ph.d, it is too early to interview with them.
Do you have ideas how I can start building a rapport with them, before asking for an interview?

They don't have a high profile and it's a pretty small company.

I did recruitment for my team as a first round tech filter and we went through about 100 pajeet visa scammers before we found a non-jeet for round 2. Honestly couldn't understand why HR didn't just auto discard pajeet resumes. It was fucking insane too they legit didn't even bother trying to answer the questions, they would all just screech I NEED A VISA I NEED A VISA until we hung up on them.

so can being a cloud engineer
thing about cloud is you end up wearing multiple hats anyways
all the cloud platforms have IDS/IPS, SIEM,and IAM tools built into them so even if your title is "cloud engineer" chances are you'll be doing security work in addition to administration work.
After a few years of this you can try to land a cloud architect role for big bucks as well.
A friend of a friend of mine is an Azure cloud engineer making over $150k and is trying to position himself for an architect role making over $200k.

Is there a bigger meme in tech than someone with a PHD? The only use I can see for it is AI research, which to be fair is extremely lucrative now, but for anything else it's retarded.

I've looked into this and you need an employer for a TN and you're fucked if they fire you. After that it's a long ass process for a Green card and then to citizenship so no it's not really seamless.

My problem is family, those visas and shit don't allow you to bring them I'd need to leave family for several years.
>>
>>100378197
>>100378240
Fake news, we need a T1, which while easier to get than a H1B is still hard as hell, plus you always have the threat of being fired and then having to go back.

Immigrating to the US (legally) is an unbelievably difficult, finicky, and unpredictable process even from Canada. Canadians are welcome to cross the border to buy gas and use our interstate highway system (which they all do) though.
>>
>feeling really shitty and need a break
>can't just text boss "hey can I take a friday and monday off to refresh my mind"
why the fuck is work politics so fucking annoying, other people just call off random days and it's fine but feeling to justify yourself to just relax seems fucking impossible.
>>
>>100378352
Hilariously, just ignoring all the bullshit and walking across like the mexicans do is by far the easiest and least fucked way of entering and staying in the US.

>>
>>100378310

>>
>>100378272
It's a TN. They aren't hard to get, you just need a US job offer.
https://twitter.com/danluu/status/1351785083598893062
>>
>>100378394
I will ask in the next thread, saar.
>>
>>100378410
Even convincing the border people is a nightmare, because only "Engineers" can get TNs, and that rule is not meant for SEs.
>>
>>100378410
also for any Canadians, the TN is not considered a visa but only for Canadians (not Mexicans). crucially this means you can answer no to the do you need sponsorship question on applications and then point to the immigration website as proof. although again, any company worth their salt will already know this entire process for Canadians.

i can't do this man all this shit is designed for homosexuals

>>
>>100378445
You're applying under the wrong TN category retard. SWEs fall under Computer Systems Analyst.
>>
>>100377522
Usually its enough, but I don't like taking chances. ESD damage doesn't always manifest as total failure. Rare instabilities (RAM/CPU errors) are an outcome.
>>
>>100378445
It helps to have an engineering degree somewhere, a company can also complete a form and send it in before you even arrive to the border. You then simply present your passport and a document saying you passed inspection, but I don't know how common this is especially in this job market.
>>
>>100378382
I'm gonna bring it up during my 1:1s to take one of the fridays off just to refresh. I don't know what's the reasoning if I ask though. I'm probably going to end up spilling my spaghetti and just say "i need it"
>>
>>100378379
Even the far left is in favor of violently deporting everyone who's done that now though. So it might not be the best long term decision.

>Why am I fucked specifically
Because you will be working alongside people who got good grades in those courses if you end up at a place worth working for. They will have work ethic and knowledge that you lack. If it were just one of those you missed you could overcome it but with both you're fucked and you likely won't make it to the interview process let alone through it.
I know this is true because I had a 2.8 gpa overall after being fucking useless when I tried to major in Econ and the only reason I made it to interviews was luck of draw after 700 applications in 2020 when money was free as can be. The sole reason I made it through to get hired was being able to talk about classes I'd taken and show off projects I was working on to fill any space given.
Keep that black mark off your resume if you can, maybe ask you schools career center what they think. If you're at a decently sized university they should have some CS guy who can give you specific advice on how to portray yourself.

If you enlist, it will take you 20 years to get the compensation you could get on the outside in a few years.
If you become officer and have a degree, you're going to be managing shit, if that's your thing this is good.
If you get a job as a contractor, it's not as long as a commitment and salary is just a little less than the private sector and you'll actually be doing tech work.

You could try reaching out to some of the more prominent employees on linkedin or email seeing if they do any sort of webinars or presentations of their research. If any of them happen to publish in a research journal, you could contact them with questions about the research or topics you were interested in/data you wanted to see. Most researchers won't mind you getting in touch via email to ask them about their literature. This is assuming you have a genuine interest in what they research
