speaking of cannonkeys they also have their "brutal v2" 1800, nothing wrong with that.

there was a normal full-size IC on geekhack a month or two ago, hopefully that materializes.

Can any argument be made for buying keyboards from brands like Leopold and Filco anymore? Is it just overpriced, dated keyboards or do their quality make it worth skipping stuff like hotswap and to also still pay a premium?
>>
>>101127529
Leopold's PBT doubleshots are nice, and they even throw in the rest of the keyboard for free.
>>
Since I bought a monitor for work I figured I'd get a keyboard as well. Spent hours looking at different options of mechanical keyboards, and today I bought a basic mouse.
I hated using the mouse (annoying to take your hands off keyboard) so much that I just bought the wireless Thinkpad keyboard that has a trackpoint. Guess it should suffice.

For future reference, what are some mechanical keyboards that have a trackpoint (other than HHKB studio)

You're being deliberately stupid at this point, the market is flooded with solid options both with and without numberpads.
>>
>>101122781
I don't even know what I'm looking at...
>>
>>101124935
If you buy good switches you never really have to lube them yourself.
>>
>>101127529
Both make nice boards in theory but personally I will never again buy a cherry-style mechanical that isn't hotswap. There are simply no downsides to being able to easily hotswap a switch, and if you've ever had to deal with switch chatter you'd know how annoying it is. I've owned 4 cherry switch keyboards and I've had chatter on two of them. If you're going to buy a non-hotswap board it should be capacitive switches, buckling springs. Leopold does have capacitive boards so I think those are worth considering. Filco really doesn't have anything on the competition at this point.

>>
>>101127529
Hotswap doesn't make a board better, it just makes it better for a particular use case, which is a noob who wants to "get into keyboards" and learn about how different switches sound.

There still isn't much that challenges Leopold at its price. Who else offers a solid 100% with cherry blacks and 1.5mm cherry-ish pbt keycaps at $150? The Keychron v6 max does beat it on price and features and is a better value, but it's a very different-sounding board with its soft gaskets, pc plate, etc. And Leopold has more color options, more switch options, etc. Not everyone likes gateron jupiter switches or Keychron's signature blue keycaps.

Other than Keychron there isn't much going on in the low-end full-size market. Where are all these boards that are so much better than Leopold for that price? It's hard to think of another board to recommend to normal people looking for a prebuilt.

do you actually look at the kitting to check whether the accents/novelties/etc in the pictures are optional or not?

I was gonna say you could get the already overpriced Mode Sixtyfive with the +$220 copper bottom case, the fluted copper accent and polycarb top case. Bit over 4.6lbs unbuilt, doesn't come close to the Glare's 7lbs (which is crazy) but still decent heft for a 65, and it's all in the bottom.

would be outrageously expensive for what you get ($560 lmao), but you do get all that lovely copper, it'd be a pretty little board.

They'd revoke your true keyboard autist card though

I want a cheap utilitarian tenkey. Don't care about ISO vs ANSI. years ago when I bought my first (and current) Steelseries I had to be fucking special and got white switches and these motherfuckers are LOUD and gummy and I'd really prefer not having loud as fuck keys anymore.
>>
>>101140121
keychron v3 max fits the bill. Gasket mount, pc plate, thick pbt caps, stuffed with foams. Get it with the jupiter red switches which are factory-lubed linears and it should be pretty quiet. And it's pretty cheap.
>>
>>101140199
>it should be pretty quiet
looked at a quick soundtest on youtube and it sounds just as loud as my white switches (despite the yootoober claiming it's the best option for working around other people), though I assume that's just him cranking up the volume in post to sell the sound to people who love loud clicky keyboards.
Board looks fucking stupid though tbqh. Appreciate the rec either way
>>
>>101140303
Have you tried cheap options like o-rings or other silent mods? I know clicky is clicky but odds are good that most of the nose comes from other parts instead of the switch.
>>
>>101140343
I'd be more inclined to do the O-rings or etc if I didn't otherwise hate the keyboard I have's general feel. It's both loud AND feels shitty to use, and I doubt there's anything I can do to fix the loudness that will not worsen how gummy it feels.
I would just get a regular keyboard if I didn't expect I'd break it extremely quickly for... reasons.
>>
>>101140403
To my knowledge there's no truly cheap options for a really quiet keyboard that actually feels good.

I'd suggest trying o-rings with your current board to see if you can accept the way they make the keyboard feel. If you're OK with those, then get a keyboard that has silent linear switches and put your o-rings on it. That combination can be reasonably cheap and quiet and will still feel better than typing on an ultracheap membrane.

If you can't handle those, then the only suggestion I would have is a Silent Topre board, but I'm not aware of any of those in production that come in fullsize. You'd probably have to mod it yourself.
>>
>>101140568
I guess I'll try the o-rings if only to try and save the cost of buying a new keyboard and de-faggoting the keycaps.
>>
>>101140568
Depends on how exactly you define cheap, but either lichicx silents or gateron geckos can just be slapped into whatever hotswap board. Both are silent switches that feel way less mushy than other silent switches.
>>
>>101140303
>it sounds just as loud as my white switches
you can't easily judge loudness from youtube videos. I own a v max keyboard, they aren't loud stock. I removed all the foams from mine to make it louder, put on loud abs mix caps, and it's still not as loud as my last keyboard was (daskeyboard 4 pro)

For clicky switches, I definitely recommend Box Jade or Navy with 50 and 75g springs respectively. They sound and feel a lot better than blues and aren't too expensive either.
>>
>>101147728
I like my click jacket gateron greens (spring swapped to 70g) better than my box jades. The jades are just too sharp a click, too tactile, I don't know. I know box whites exist but I really think click jackets are underrated. They have a unique typing feel.

wats special about dye sub?
and what is it
>>
>>101151725
XMI dye sub caps start with very good thick PBT blanks (same ones Shenpo uses) and then heat and dye is used to add legends to them by actually dyeing the plastic. The limitation of dye sub is you can only do dark dyes onto lighter bases, so no white-on-black dye sub (Unless you dye a white cap black all over, which tends to fuck up the caps).

If done poorly the dye can bleed, look blurry, etc. But at a low price point the quality of caps you can get with dye sub is going to be a good deal better than what's available with other manufacturing methods. And the options for kitting are going to be far better because there isn't expensive tooling required for each cap like there would be with e.g. double-shot.

Can someone give me a quick rundown on springs? the pastebin had no info on them. What is the significance between spring lengths, platings, stages? Weights? Who sales the best springs and why? I know Gazzew used Korean springs.

What do you prefer and why?

I'm not exactly qualified but
>length
if longer, the switch can top out quicker
>platings
probably spring ping and rust prevention idk
>stages
idk, only used single staged ones
>weights
if heavier, prevents you from bottoming out and prevents typos
>best springs
only used tx springs but I heard geon and sprit have great springs
>preference
for me its 62.5g long single stage springs since its not that light preventing typos and has a snappy top out

my old keyboard had audio controls, though they aren't strictly necessary
>Backlight
good indicator lights for num lock and caps lock is all I need
>Previous/current keyboards
Ducky one 2 mini 100% with cherry blue
I've grown tired of loud keyboards. give something nice and quiet.
the ducky one 2 mini had this awful design flaw of shoving the indicator lights between the numpad and the media keys, which meant you couldn't see the lights at all unless you looked down from straight above.
ideally I don't have any gay FN key that takes away space from an actually useful key, and yes, I do use the copied Ctrl, shift, windows keys, as well as the one in picrel. and alt gr is a requirement as well but that should always be present on a German iso.
>>
>>101156850
>plating
plating looks more 'premium' but eventually flakes, avoid, it's a meme
>length
long springs have a more even force curve because they are already significantly compressed at the top of the stroke. Short springs will be light to start and ramp up more dramatically through the stroke. for a given weight long springs will feel heavier overall
>stages
no idea. some say this helps prevent buckling and rubbing against the pole shaft in longer springs.
>weight
this is the most important one. describes the force of the spring at bottom-out. determines switch feel to a large degree. light springs are fast and easy to press, but touch typists might find they accidentally press them while resting their fingers. lighter may also mean you bottom out harder and could be fatiguing for some. Too light and switches will struggle to return to their initial position, which is why for the spacebar (heavy keycap) I always use 90g springs. Heavy springs will require more forceful typing strokes but soften your bottom-out and reduce accidental keypresses.

usually finding the right weight is a matter of finding the sweet spot where it's heavy enough to eliminate accidental strokes but light enough to not tire your fingers. If you play games where you spam keys fast you might need it lighter than what you'd want for typing. most people like something in the range of 45g to 70g, some like heavier but most 80g switches were intended for spacebars

I think frl tkls look better because they preserve the elongated proportions of a full keyboard. TKLs look square and truncated. And the keys they keep (pause/break? scroll lock? F keys?) are so low-value they might as well not be there.

Don't get me wrong I use f-keys all the time but turning them into fn combinations with the num row is trivially easy and not that bothersome considering the frequency with which those keys are actually used.

>>101161823
I'm tired of waiting for the keyboard I actually want to someday be made.

low profile exists for one reason only: laptop users who don't want to adjust to another typing style. Everyone who thinks they need low profile gets comfortable with an MX keyboard if they use it longer than a few weeks.

Low profiles have no future. It's a compromise product that isn't actually needed. The ones that exist presently are plenty.

a 60% hotswap would be a good idea for that sort of thing. Also will help you learn how much of the board you can live with sacrificing and which things are more painful to lose. Better to learn that now than on a much more expensive purchase.

Also the smaller the board the less work it is to swap out switches, do stabs, swap keycaps, change plates, etc.

>>
>>101179672
>I was under the impression that most 60% plates are universal?
It's not quite that simple, depends on how identical the pcbs are and sometimes the mounting points

mounting refers to how the pcb (or sometimes plate) is connected to the case
>>
>>101180151

buy better caps elsewhere. e.g. through this ongoing XMI groupbuy:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfe0H_3VnGub_0C5hoHXjqOhzEFB5zdgCOZkMd5yi-b7HkiQQ/viewform?fbzx=5634553927530400639

if you check the images you'll see win logo bottom row comes with the menu key you want. So German layout + win logo bottom row. And since it's for a keychron board (so it's got RGB on the key itself for caps lock indicator etc) you'll want to get the windowed caps option—trust me, it's worth it.

If you're unsure of anything you can also message the guy with questions. E.g. to make sure adding that bottom row you still get alt gr

After you get caps you'll just have to do some rebinding in QMK or VIA, not a big deal.
>>
>>101181271

My G915 TKL keyboard suddenly stopped working via BlueTooth. Could it be because of the device I'm connecting to? I looked through the archives for information about a similar-looking Lenovo/IBM keyboard, the SK-8845CR, and someone mentioned within an /mkg/ thread that chinks still make these, and are relatively cheap, but are price gouged on eBay. Are they only cheap in the motherland, or am I just not looking hard enough? Do they have a Chinese layout?

I suspect so, but I want to know how the other popular materials compare so that I can say from my own experience when they are or are not appropriate.

the only good foam is a removed foam

Ye I really want the Pro X Superlight it's even on sale right now... Problem is not being able to switch between work laptop and PC is a massive dealbreaker for me. Already went for a wireless keyboard for that purpose. Having two mouses sounds stupid but it might be the play idk...
It's possible Logitech was far ahead of the game when releasing the Superlight but competitors have caught up since.

Its like a hardware aldis, that is kinda cool, I like the idea of just a random "grab bag" shelf. That is close enough to gambling to have me check it out everytime they change the shelves over.

Is the field75 any good? I'm a bit hesitant at its design but it really ticks the boxes I want in a keyboard. TKL, north facing LEDs wheel to control volume, hot-swappable I'm just a little unsure about it atm.

lol you would have come a lot closer recommending 65xt + numpad like picrel, but it wouldn't matter because it's still not what he wants, which is an extra right-hand column (hideous, should not exist)
>>
>>101196399
yea i know it looks like a cheap prop, but ive been using one for like 6 months and the build quality is very good. Its heavy and there is very little flex. The grebels are actually useful and functional too. Software isn't too bad either.

Is the FP Cool School any good? I'm a bit hesitant at its design but it really ticks the boxes I want in a keyboard. Modless 60, full light-up macro keys, integrated tablet, legendary FP build quality. I'm just a little unsure about it atm.

i have a filco majestouch 2, i fell for the cherry mx blue meme, i'm really hate the deafening noise and travel distance now that at work i have a keychron with low-profile browns, it's so much better for using for the whole day

question is, can i replace the cherry mx blues in the filco for low profile cherry mx browns and smaller keycaps, or should i just try and sell the keyboard and look for something else that matches what i want?
>>
>>101196776
no you cannot put low profile switches in an MX keyboard, it's a different type of switch.

There are many kinds of MX switch which are not as noisy and some have shorter travel distance as well, but if you really want low profile then get a low profile board
>>
>>101196663
i agree, its a shame companies are too pussy to try out experimental industrial design. I dont think the cybertruck is actually that attractive, but i respect that they have the balls to mass manufacture something that looks like its from ghost in the shell

Consensus on the razer blackwidow v4 75%

Yeah I know '>razer' but it seems to have decent reviews people are saying it's actually a good product, but it's like $260AUD on sale at the moment. Feels a little too steep still.

Princess Auto made their nut on military surplus. They used the liquidity to become Canadian Harbor Freight. They maintain around 10% floor space for surplus now, they do still have some military stuff but they've dedicated a few rows to stuff like electronics. If you need hundreds of feet of CAT5 cable it's often the only game in town. I saw a Chinese kid in a matrix trench coat getting called a fag by a pig farmer there just last week as I was buying an ammo box.
