Why is AMD driver so bad?

Why is it so hard to find TBW stats on the MX500/870 Evo 500GB? They all claim a different lifespan.
>>

Only for paypigs who buy it on release, waitchads get price drops and updated drivers. You have to be fucking mental to buy AMD cards on release, if you have that kind of money just suck it up and pay the Nvidia tax already, otherwise you're just a beta tester for us waitbros who get the card later at the bargain bin.

Dark Rock coolers are fine for Intel CPUs.
be Quiet decided not to invest in developing & providing offset brackets to better cool Ryzen CCDs.
>Then why is Scythe Fuma 3 recommended
Because it's specifically recommended for smaller/tighter form factor compatibility. Plus it's cheaper.
The Mugen 6 dual fan (black) edition superseded the Fuma 3's performance with similar dimensions.
>>
>>101131752
I believe the 180 TBW figure because I have around 110 written for my old MX500 here I believe and it's got around 30% left. Most of that is from pagefile/hiberfil/chromium cache.
>>
Are 5.25" SATA USB expansion hubs a thing at all? I'd really like to populate the remaining 5.25" bay in my case with something useful, but I've already used the remaining USB header on this motherboard for a 3.5" SD card reader. And I could really use more USB ports for stuff like peripherals and wireless receivers (unless I'm better off just getting an expansion card of some kind here on my old ass FM2ish system).

>>
>>101132048
What is your current AM4 CPU? If the cost makes sense for you, sure.
I wouldn't get it if you already have something like a 5600.

Don't worry about CPU temps if you already have a Dark Rock cooler, it will just run louder & hotter (with boost throttling thermal protection) under high CPU loads.
>>
>>101131873
>How much do used 3090's run now though? I'm talking in canadian funny money.
im not gonna search it for you. but performance in languiage models is proportional to memory bandwidth. 4060ti has 288, 3090/4090 have around 1000GB/s

Mostly the top panel not supporting a 360mm radiator and it only ships with 2x preinstalled fans.
Lian Li Lancool 216 or Phanteks XT Pro (Ultra) are better alternatives.
The XT Pro will require an additional fan purchase, but it's still cheaper than the 4000D airflow assuming you buy a P12 5 pack.

4000D has no business being a +$90 case anymore.
>>
>>101132192
You don't need a better cooler than a $35 Peerless Assassin for the 5700X3D.
Either that or the Mugen 6 dual fan would be my air cooler option.
Use an AIO if that's your personal preference.

I just told my guy to pick one of these from most expensive to least expensive. I'm certain the cheapest 850w Vertex GX will do a fine job with a 3070 and I forgot what else he got scammed on by an obese redditor. No room for upgrades, but by the time this dude upgrades the new Nvidia GPUs will require 1500w PSUs.

Asus ROG Strix 1000w/850w
Seasonic Vertex GX 1000w/850w
>>
Why the fuck are PCI/E expansion cards so expensive? They quickly add up to the cost of a low-end PCU or motherboard if you want stuff like lots of USB ports or some other specific I/O.
>>
>>101132397
Where are you sourcing your card and what the fuck kind of exotic ports are you using. An x1 to 4 USB3 ports card is like $2-4 on Aliexpress. Are you using Firewire or old SCSI?
>>
>>101132487
I bought my Digitus ds-30201-s over on Allegro for around $30 since the price was pretty much the same everywhere I looked a while back when digitizing a lot of old cassette tapes. I've been looking at some x1 USB 3X expansion cards with 4-6 ports and they seem to hover around the $20-$35 range which just makes no sense to me considering stuff like ODD/FDD/card readers even with shipping are like $5 at most. Ironically the chinkshit listings which have flooded the site in recent years are the more expensive ones with shipping taken into account more often than not.
>>
>>101132145

Be honest, did any of you actually use the regular PCI expansion slots after the mid 2000s? I still see these included on motherboards from the mid 2010s when they could have been served much better by having additional PCIE expansion slots. So even if you get a full ATX motherboard you'll still have only around 2 full PCIE slots, three x1 or x4 slots, and then two more PCI slots instead of 7 PCIE slots.

Get the 3090Ti if you can. You need to set an undervolt, power limit, and maximum frame limit on regular 3090s to protect it from randomly dying (inadequate overcurrent protection allowing current spikes to destroy fuses & DrMOS IC).
Not fearmongering, someone in this thread had their 3090 AORUS randomly die recently and replaced it with a 4090.
The guy wasn't even playing demanding modern games.

What temp difference would I be looking at going from my current Arctic Freezer 34 Duo to a Phantom Spirit or a Frozen Notte/Liquid Freezer AIO?

CPU is a 5800x3d, main concern is silence for me so if I could lower them it'd be nice.
The Freezer 34 I'm using is from my old 3700X build, it holds temps fine (with CO -30) but I feel like it could be better.

>>101132939
I've got a liquid freezer II 280 bolted to a 5800x3d running a -30 offset (via co) and it is inaudible to me basically all the time. A sustained 100% load might get the fans to be audible (and even then, that is just the default fan curve on my mobo - if I use the silent option or hand tune the curve i'd never hear it). I do have my pc under my desk and I use open back headphones a lot.

In fact the two noctua NF-P12's (non-pwm) make more noise than the 140mm fans the liquid freezer ships with because they 140mm fans simply never spin up because the chip just doesn't draw enough juice to heat up.
>>
>>101133076
What do your temps look like in say Prime95 or OCCT?

Even at -30 I'm looking at close to 90°, ideally I'd like to be able to push some more VSOC voltage and try running IF at 1900Mhz to get a slight performance edge.
>>
>>101132939
If you're just gaming you should be able to get your current CPU cooler to be quieter than your card fairly easily. Tune your fan curve to keep it under 1300RPM or so. A larger cooler would let you set that even lower but the card will be the noisiest component in most games - the GPU sitting at 90%+ while the CPU is plodding along. Of course if you have a nice beefy GPU cooler as well then a larger CPU heatsink would be warranted for max silence.

I am currently using an AM4 build with a Ryzen 5 2600 and a GTX 1060. I want to upgrade to an AM5 build. Since I am from Russia, everything is limited. Here are the components I plan to use:

Ryzen 5 7500F
RTX 3060 TI
ASRock B650M-HDV
ADATA XPG LANCER DDR5 16GB (2x8GB) 5200MHz
WD SN770 1TB
Fractal Design Ion+ 750W
Cheap mini tower case
Is there anything I need to change? Can I overclock the RAM to 6000MHz? Should I get a heat sink fan (HSF) as well?

Are they just going around to warehouses with deepcool coolers fans and cases and just taking a hammer to them or melting them down or what?

>>
>>101133258
>AM4 build with a Ryzen 5 2600
You could replace that with a 150€ 5700x3D without buying a whole new motherboard and all, you can order one of those on AliExpress which I'm pretty sure Russia has access to even now.

If your current PSU is above 600W, you can buy any GPU up to the 4070 Ti Super and your PC will run just fine.
Going to AM5 is only worth it if you at least get a 7800X3D imo, the 5700X3D/5800X3D both outperform the majority of the AM5 non-X3D lineup in gaming.

I don't know much about coolers. Can a dual tower with 6 heat pipes and aluminum heat sink fully handle a processor from 2022? Namely a Ryzen 7 5700X?
I really have no idea how to check something like this
>>
>>101134239
A 5700x isn't a very thirsty cpu (remember the basic rule - energy in = heat out) so a dual tower will keep it under tjmax in a typical atx setup.
>>
>>101134239
My 5700X (admittedly with PBO off) sits at like 55C in cinebench with a basic Hyper 212 black. Any dual tower will be mooore than enough
>>
>>101134239
general rule is that a dual tower 140mm cooler can cool a cpu drawing 170watt to 80 degree. you can even cool a 14900k as long as you don't do any overclocking
>>
>>101134260
>A 5700x isn't a very thirsty cpu
True but truth be told I can't find info on cooler release date so I don't know how old this one is compared to the CPU to see if it should handle its thirst.
>(remember the basic rule - energy in = heat out)
Well, the voltage of the CPU should be 65W. The power supply should be between 850W and 1000W. Not quite sure if you can deduct anything based on this info but if you can let me know.
>Basic ATX setup.
Well the motherboard is mATX apparently, didn't think this would really matter for the cooler, gonna use these with a GTX 1660S too.
The motherboard will be an Asus PRIME A520M-A II.
>>
>>101134273
>>101134323
Interesting, I will be using it to play some more modern games on it now. A friend told me to watch out about the cooler because some CPUs can be a struggle, but I will take your guys word for it then.

>Cooler
I'd want an AIO for a 14700K that's going to hit 100% load regularly. Mainly for noise but it'll maintain slightly higher boost clocks too.
Your case can fit a 360mm up front which is what I'd recommend if you're wedded to that model. Speaking of which:

>Case
The 4000D is suboptimal for high-end cooling. Limited to 240mm on top and requires a "tubes up" orientation for front mounting. Doing so isn't the end of the world but there's better options out there now if you're not wedded to the aesthetics. I'd suggest the Meshify 2 if you need filtration or the Lancool 216 if not. Also the Air 903 if you need to cut budget.

>RAM
Might want 64GB if you're running multiple VMs.

>PSU
It's good but buying an ATX2 unit for a high-end build is odd. There's 1kW ATX3 units for about the same money eg. Focus GX ATX3 @ $139.

Just keep waiting®. You can afford to pay full/premium price on the latest hardware.
New Ryzen CPUs in July & New Intel Core Ultra CPUs in September.
The Intel CPU might deliver underwhelming performance, but the memory controller is going to be dedicated for DDR5 for the first time.
Spend the bulk of that budget on the RTX 5090.

Maybe buy a high-end NVMe drive while you're waiting if they're decently discounted.
The more you save on boring parts, the more you can spend on expensive new hardware.

Get a 12VHPWR/12V-2x6 cable with a 90° bend on the GPU side of the connector, one that is compatible with your PSU.
You need to be mindful of the 90° connector's orientation.
The Seasonic one in the image requires the cable to go over the top of the video card unless it's an ASUS model.
https://store.cablemod.com/product-category/cablemod-basics/cb-12vhpwr/
CableMod's 90° cables are fine, it's the adapter they've had to recall. 2x 8-pin to 12VHPWR cable is also fine.

The Lighting board is similarly priced as the HDV due to a time-limited discount (expires in 9 hrs).
Wattage for CPU & GPU is only going up so getting a 1000W PSU isn't a bad idea if you plan to get more power-hungry processors in the future.
850W is fine if you don't see yourself buying a video card that draws over 450W.

Hardware Unboxed's motherboard compilation shows the ones with weaker power delivery components that end up performance-throttling higher-end CPUs.

Memory chips are made by three major manufacturers (Micron, Samsung, SK Hynix), SK Hynix makes the more performant DDR5 chips so far (A/M dies).
6000MT/s CL30 or 6400MT/s CL34 and kits that have an XMP/EXPO profile with over 7000MT/s speeds are all made by Hynix.
The brand that assembles the chips isn't that important, TweakTown has decent memory reviews if you're concerned with it.
Micron and SK Hynix have their in-house memory brand. Crucial for Micron and Essencore/Klevv for SK Hynix.

For video cards, just try to find information regarding the cooling capacity and power limits of the card.
Budget permitting, you want to buy a card with high power limits and that runs relatively cool & quiet.
There are differences in VRM components but it's applicable for XOCing.
All major GPU designers (NVIDIA, AMD, & Intel) share the minimum component requirements for card manufacturers, this is commonly called reference design or reference cards.
Basically, card manufacturers will lose their GPU partnership if they decide to use components that fail to meet the GPU designer's minimum standards.
TechPowerUp performs teardowns for component analysis and posts temperature & noise tables of their review sample.

TomsHardware, TweakTown, & TechPowerUp have good SSD reviews.

PSU reviews, check Hardware Busters.

Case fans, listen to noise sample recordings and check performance graphs on YouTube.
HWcooling.net provides in-depth case fan reviews.

PC cases, check reviews in YouTube.

Noctua NF-P12 redux-1700 PWM has significantly more airflow and static pressure at full speed which is what i want for better cooling capacity, and it seems that you could easily run it a bit slower at 1500-1600 rpm for similar cooling performance and noise level as the other fans, yet people say it's not a great fan, because they look at noise at a given rpm fan speed even though the airflow and static pressure is different for the same rpm?

I really like that hard drives aren't even a consideration when it comes to gaming rigs anymore

Help very much appreciated! After 9 years i finally wanna get a new pc and since i dont know a lot about this topic i need some advice for a complete build.

My budget is ~1000€. (I could probably squeeze out another 100€ if you say there are some parts where it is very important or makes sense, otherwise i would rather use it to maybe get a new monitor). Im from Germany and will probably simply end up putting in one of your suggested configurations into an online pc shop, let them build and ship it to me.

All i want to do with it is basically watch youtube, movies, twitch etc. and play games (For games i dont really care about ultra high settings more about performance and i just want to be able to play some games that came out the last few years like the Resident evil remakes, Red dead redemption 2 and maybe GTA 6 when it comes out).

Some requirements:
-Doesnt need flashy colorful lights or to look cool.
-I want normal Air cooling and not a water cooling system
-Preferably Nvidia graphics card (my old one was an AMD and it sometimes caused some annoying blackscreens and also i read everywhere that AMD in general causes more problems than nvidia)
Also i dont know anything about things like overclocking and buying new parts and adding them in the future so that is all completely irrelevant for me.

Im someone who barely ever changes anything if it its working alright so I just want another solid and reliable PC which i can use for atleast the next 5 years. Thanks for any help!

It improved a bit. Though AMD has substantially inferior feature set compared to Nvidia(ignore the coping replies). I would definitely buy 4070 super if you can comfortably get it in your budget. Though it is not the end of the world to buy RX 7800xt for a bit cheaper and 7700xt for even cheaper(a quarter less raw performance than 4070s, excluding lack of features)
>Also what i just thought of when i saw your config, it only has 1 hard drive right? Would it be better to get a seperate, smaller one for windows and another one for games/movies etc? Atleast thats what my old pc was like
We phased out of hard drives years ago. You only buy them if you need to dump archives, files, movies, etc. You don't use hard drive for gaming.
As for having two different drives some people still buy 1 good ssd for OS, and a more cheap and mediocre one for dumping games. Though this doesn't make sense in your budget. You have a one drive that does both.

Lightmapping was invented back in 1996 by Carmack to create prebake raytraced lighting as a texture file without taxing the shit out of the graphic accelerator. Metro Exodus fixes the performance issue by throwing the traditional lightmapping technique into the trash and recreate the game from scratch.
For most AAA devs they just go "why not both?" and the performance goes to die.

I dont exactly know what you mean with lack of feautures (if you mean stuff like nvidia shadow for recording and apps like that i dont really use that sort of stuff so mainly care about performance) but i wrote those 2 other cheaper ones down for now. >the problem is i probably cant just swap them out and the rest of the config stays the exact same because some other parts might not be compatible with them right?
You can just swap them in actually. You can use pcpartpicker to change the build, it will show (most of the) potential conflicts and problems.

Do you seriously use CD/DVDs in 2024? Anyway, you are not going to find many modern cases with the space for that. If you actually need it one day, you can just buy an external USB DVD drive, around 30-50 euros or so I think?

Here's a question: Would AMD be better off with relaunching with a new GPU brand? I think them abandoning the FX/A Brand and making the Ryzen Brand name did wonders to show consumers that it's a new product and a competetive one, far removed from their old product (bulldozer).

If so, what would the new name be?
>>
>>101138833

Their video cards need to fulfill advertised performance and have feature parity before brand issues are brought up.

>>
>>101139456
Whatever it is, it needs to have a Z or an X in it
It also just needs to be a massive improvement, not slightly better performance with a complete name brand change. Ryzen also succeeded because of how amazing its price/perf and that is was actually competent, as opposed to bulldozer

The discrete gaming GPU market is shrinking, and NVIDIA will argue they don't have a monopoly on mobile GPUs.
NVIDIA will also say the government shouldn't punish them for selling better, more in-demand products.
It's not like NVIDIA's dumping their GeForce cards below cost to maintain a grip on the market, they're maximizing margins per unit sold.

Oh yeah i dont really know about these kind of features. I always played games on lower settings anyways even if higher were possible just for better performance. Thats my main criterium.

I often use 3 usb ports which are on the front of my PC so i wasnt sure if it only had the 2 i saw. And yeah the CD slot i use extremely rarely but its just something i thought would be nice to have in general. Serious answer. No cap. It was an absolute NIGHTMARE to fully unfuck Win 10 and virtually impossible to do so in Win 11. Lots of fake settings that do jack shit and get constantly reset anyway. Two questions:
1) Is this a particularly bad case? Most people online seem to report it only at over ~300fps.
2) Is there unit variance between cards of the same model? I have read conflicting info on this. Some people say it will be about the same across units of the same model, others say it's a lottery. Genuinely curious. Would putting an anime girl figure potentially increase heat inside the PC because of the figure's materials, or damage the figure itself?
>>
>>101139892
If the vibration frequency of your graphics card matches that of the PSU, they resonate and the vibration becomes loud enough to be audible. Both of them are right. Generally cards and PSUs of the same batch have the same frequency, so exchanging might not solve the issue. On the other hand, the coil whine frequency is largely random among all the parts (and even among different production runs of the same model), and it IS a bad lottery to get coil whine.

Many card will push some sort of sound into audible range at super high fps. What fps do you hear cw at? Does limiting your fps to your refresh rate fix it?
>Is there unit variance between cards of the same model?
Yes. Though some models are just bad and most cards of that model can have it. For others its rare. You need to research this for your model yourself.
>others say it's a lottery.
Even in the worst models there are always lucky ones that don't make any audible sound. It's a lottery either way. Do bear in mind that it is possible that the next card will have even worse cw.
>>101139995
>If the vibration frequency of your graphics card matches that of the PSU, they resonate and the vibration becomes loud enough to be audible.
This is nonsense. Coil whine is caused by vibrations of the coils inside the GPU inductors resonating with each other. The way PSU delivers power affects GPU coil whine shitton but PSU and GPU do not resonate with each other lmao.

Sadly not that bad. Many manufacturers cheapen out on inductors, nor glue them properly. Many cards have fairly widespread CW rates.

This is sometimes the case but it's rare. The core problem with cw is most commonly poor acoustics surrounding inductors and gpu board design. Many cards will scream like crazy in perfect power delivery too.

Thanks, I'll try getting another one then. If it ends up having more coil whine then I'll just cope and seethe and anti-shill the company on every forum.
>>101140048
Hopefully not - none of my previous builds had any whine at all so I'm gonna assume its not that

Early 2025 is going to be expensive for me

i've waffled for years on whether or not to upgrade my pc, but i'm finally at the point where i want to play games that my current rig (ryzen 3 2200g, gtx750 1GB i got from my friend) simply isn't specced for.

came up with this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/QQbRdH

some notes:

live in the US, budget ideally sub-$350 for these upgrades to what's been a very solid system for the last 5-6 years or so

i've upgraded my motherboard's BIOS so it should be able to take the ryzen 5 3600

it's cheaper to get another 16gb 2x8GB set and just put it in alongside my existing one than getting a new 32gb 2x16GB one

the graphics card is where i need the most guidance - i do have a 1060 6GB someone gave to me when i helped upgrade their rig, but it's HEAVILY used and i have no clue how reliable it'd be. i also run linux so i'd rather not have an nvidia card, though i do have one right now. i chose the 580 in my build because you can still buy it new and it doesn't seem overkill to me

turns out my GPU is both an extremely terrible overclocker and a totally average undervolter, at least it's totally quiet

did you guys ever hit silicon lottery on some parts?
best I ever had was a 3700X that could somehow boot and bench at 2000mhz FCLK

okay for the gpu you can buy a 6600 or 6650 (new) for 200-220. On the used market you can get something like a 5700xt for the amount of money the rx 580 costs (120-125). RTX 2000 series is also doable at that price range, used.

For the processor If you don't mind buying from AliExpress you can get a 5600 for 95 or so. The ram is a nothing burger they cost pretty much the same all of them so 35. You won't exceed the 350

RX 580 is ancient junk. Buy something like second hand 3060 or 5700xt.
>i also run linux so i'd rather not have an nvidia card, though i do have one right now.
I have been daily diving arch on my 3060 last few months. No major issues, but your call.
I would also strongly recommend buying 5600 for just a little bit more. Should be worth it.

Worth infinitely more than practically unnoticeable single digit performance boost.

I have one of the best 4080 Super FE according to 3DMark leaderboards.
The GPU deserves to be water cooled because the FE cooler is thermally limiting the performance, but I bought it because I like the FE cooler.
I would’ve bought a 4090 if I planned on custom water cooling my card anyway.

it's tricky, AM5 might last long enough that you'd have to get a mobo+ram eventually anyway, you can get a decent mobo+ram combo for <$300 currently. but current non-X670E motherboards are shitty ass at getting DDR5-8000 stable, takes literal weeks/months of tuning if it's even possible at all. maybe cope with 1800X until zen 5 and X870/X870E motherboards come out. overclockable 7200+ mhz DDR5 kits don't have to cost that much especially if you get them during an aliexpress sale or a temporary reduction on amazon.

I own a 290x tri-x that will do 1200mhz on the core which is a monstrous 20% overclock and well above the average overclock (which is 1150mhz). Sucks down more power than my current 7900xtx though lol.

old as fuck

but yeah, i thought about it a while ago. nvidias offices have already been raided with no rhyme or reason in france. even if they wanted to cut prices, they dont really can because it would result in even bigger market share and who knows if, especially the current, FTC wouldn't demand some divestiture
