Windows users really download 3rd party executables and run them as administrator
This is my only Windows computer and if I want to download something it's a big enough pain to check what I'm downloading. YMMV.
Windows 3.1 with Win32S was solid. You could run a good chunk of Windows 95 programs with Win32S on Windows 3.1 / 3.11.

Linux users really install third-party binaries through their package manager and run them under sudo.
