If you were taken back to the late 80s-early 90s and had the opportunity to talk to Dave Cutler (main guy behind Windows NT), what would you say to him, with all of your current knowledge in mind?
>>101380368Hi, how ya doing?
>>101380368Hey, could you please tell my future self to invest in Bitcoin?
>>101380396I mean my past self, but in the future, you get the idea. Why didn't I go back in time to hunt dinosaurs instead? You remind me of Paulie or whatever that guy from Rocky was named.
NT would exist for longer if you released the source code, just saying.
>>101380368I would ask him if he wants windows to be designed by pajeets in the 2000s and if not to leak the source code.
>>101380368~-"Why did you let Bill and John pilfer all that code from DEC/VMS?"
>some fag is gonna start a thread about you on a tranny socks comparison website in 2024 so you better get a job working in a supermarket or whatever
Absolutely nothing
>>101380368It's going to get way worse from here, pal
i will tell him to get a sex change and marry Linus Torvalds. i want to see how that cross pollination changes Windows NT and Linux
>>101380368Hey, I'm just going to tell you'd be doing the entire computing world a massive favor if you quietly "leaked" the source code for NT some 15-20 years from now.
>>101380368I'd ask him if it was intentional that incrementing the letters in VMS results in WNT
>>101380368this P2 with raid pack is, but could anyone do something about the noice
>>101380368Why does windows need to be restarted for system updates to take effect?
>>101381544Driver developers and others being hacks. Linux solves this by integrating all the drivers in the kernel and having Linus dress down the hacks in the mailing list until they fix their code to his satisfaction.
>>101381698Isn't NT a microkernel tho? Is it really just shitty drivers that means they can't be reloaded on demand? Or are the NT kernel interfaces not good enough somehow?
>>101380368I would try to fuck him.
>>101382125I'm spitballing here with little relevant experience, I think it's both based on what I've heard and read, specifically with drivers. They're usually only tested and made for the most common configuration at the time, and I wouldn't be surprised that NT's interface is so interdependent on things already running with so many hack jobs on top that it would require a large if not massive overhaul or one of the bugiest hacked together patch jobs known to man. It could also just be that such a feature was never anticipated or deemed necessary resulting in the above.
main guy behind..main guy may only be the front
>>101382242>>101382242So having every windows PC in the world spend a hour or so for every set of updates where the end user can't do anything else is now an anticipated 'feature'?
>>101382242Can Microsoft not refactor all this with co-pilot AI?
>>101381027>has VM that runs linux>this somehow "results" in windows NT
>>101380368When uPRISM got killed, how did you get away with stealing VAX/VMS for Microsoft?
>>101380481KekOne additional question:How did you manage to create a career reimplmenting RSX-11 over & over again?
>>101380481Did you ever look at the system performance monitor for NT back in the 3.5 days? Parameters like non-paged dynamic pool sitting right in front of your nose.It was obvious to many at DEC what happened.
>>101380456>just saying. Why, so some troons can fork the project 20 times, rewrite it in rust and then when it doesn't work infight over which version of it is the future?
>>101380368>Burn DOS>Replace it with BASH>save the world...but of course that was not the point of Windows NT
>>101380368i would say winNT & 2k was the last good windows, you should have jumped over to Linux when XP was being developed
>>101382701The opposite, it's a feature to not wait for an updating machine, one that was not anticipated for one reason or another.>>101382751As far as I can tell: Hell no!Copilot isn't good enough to trust it with large functional segments, it's really good with boilerplate though! Then you'd also spend as much time fixing and debugging the code as it would take to write and debug anyway.Besides, that's not where the money is at, and honestly, to the untrained eye it looks like misanthropy with the forced updoots you have to tinker to disable on every boot and updoot.
>>101380368"Don't work for Microsoft"
>>101380368Thank you for making linux-troons seeth
Reminder the first version of Windows that you're currently using is this.
>>101381698more like Linus dress up in a maid costume
>>101387345>the first version of Windows that you're currently using>the first version of Windows>that you're currently
>>101381544Because updating without restarting is dumb. Oh wow, you replaced the files because your OS has no concept of locks, but those files are not actually loaded and running since any running software has still got the old files loaded. Its stupid and pointless, just restart to update properly.
>>101383229Yes.
