>>103272273I dunno, but 4TB HGST HDDs are noisy but they are the best of the best.I'm sad that Hitashi got bought by WD.
>>103272298rubber washers + rubber enclosure for noise dampening.or as some have done it, velcro with sticky back to reduce the noises as the hdd rests on those velcro to absorb/diffuse/dampen the noise
>>103272273I've found WD Red 10TB (2017 model) to be a quiet HDD. It's a 5400 rpm NAS drive filled with Helium, after all.Dunno how the newer Reds / Red Pros sound, just aware WD segmented them after the SMR scandal.
>>103272273This is another "/g/tards parroting each others bullshit because they're too poor to have ever owned an X" thread - in this case, non-coomsoomer-tier hard disk.As someone who has a wall (well, 4) of Ironwolf Pros, I can't hear them over the fans in my server. WD Reds are about the same. WD Golds are somewhat louder, but nothing you'll lose sleep over. Exos's are pretty noisy on seek though, but nowhere near what /g/ pretends they are.
>>103272273meds
>>103272273It's true, 8TB HDD is very loud, had I realized this I would not have purchased one
you realize they make sound damping cases, right? This isn't even an issue for me because I like hearing them spin and seek. What the fuck is the problem?
I've got a synology 5 bay about 5 feet from my head and it's got 5x 18tb WD Ultrastar HC550's and I can barely hear them even when they're rebuilding or running a data scrub. They absolutely make noise but loud is the last thing I'd describe it as.A lot of it is probably thanks to the nas. There's a lot of valid criticisms to be made about synology but their chassis is not one of them.
>>103272273I have a 16TB Seagate running 24/7 seeding torrents about 5 feet from my bed.I can hear it sometimes if I'm paying attention, but it's not even really that loud.
>>103274950Based seeder, you make the internet a better place.
>>103272273autism
>>103273005My exos drives aren't very loud but they're quite a bit louder than what your average 3.5'' drive sounded like back in their heyday. My shucked wd whites are loud. Like what you' think is hyperbole loud.
>>103272273My picrel are helium filled and hardly audible when idle. Data transfer of up to 300MB/s. Got 2, will buy 2 more.
>>103275603My N300 16Tb are helium-filled and are inaudible when idle. Start writing/reading though and it's>VROOM VROOM VROOM VROOM VROOMacross the house. Already installed rubber feet and made sure there's no wiggle room in the bay. I guess I must go full autismo and suspend the drive on cords like in the 90s.
>>103274740it is a problem for socially normal men who have a woman at their housewomen don't share the 'tistic love for hdds and WILL complain about the noise
>>103272543>5400rpmDoes not exist for high-capacity drives (surprised a 10Tb exists though). Also speed = consumer drive = risk getting SMR.
>>103275603Pretty much all drives over 8TB are He these days. It's neither a selling point, nor any sort of panacea, as it doesn't change seek noise - which is what most people ITT are bitching about.

>>103273005OP is just another case of hating new shit because of sour grapes. I've noticed a trend of anyone who claims to "appreciate" HDDs almost never has a drive above 2TB.The only way you'd consider helium drives to be loud is if you never handledany 7200rpm drives. Huge difference between new drives and some other 3-4TB HGST Ultrastars I have
>>103277569I don't get it either, nothing with a vagina has ever even seen the inside of my room
>tfw my storage is entirely SSDs nowPoorfaggots. Swear on me mum.
my 16 TB 7200 rpm drives drives make a shitload of noise. that's why i got another silent 4TB drive for stuff that's actively in use and use the big ones for long-term storage. fucking things sound like there's a shooting war inside my case.

This is why I only buy 8tb 5400rpm drives. The $/tb is also bretty good. Think you can get semengates for $110 from amazon rn.WD ZFS pool in usb-c external enclosure Wendell was shilling. Could barely hear the drives while standing next to them, added a little butyl to the case and now I can't hear them at all

they're drives that were developed originally for enterprise, and no one in a data center gives a fuck about how loud the hard drives are
>>103282364My N300 (a NAS drive) begs to differ
planning on buying a pair of 20TB drives. going from having had a completely silent SSD system for the past ~10 years so it's going to be interesting to see how much the sound will bother me. i'm expecting to find it nostalgic and comfy desu, but you never know
>>103272273Tried four Seagate Exos X18s 18TB in a ZFS pool and honestly they don't make that much sound at all unless you're very sensitive. Plus you can tweak shit with OpenSeaChest to stop things like parking. Was a bit skeptical since Seagate has had a shit reputation after the Barracudas that killed themselves a long time ago. However one or more of them has some kind of defect that randomly makes a screeching noise about once a day like you wouldn't believe. Doesn't last longer than a few seconds, but it's like one of those excruciating high pitched noises you heard as a kid that the parents couldn't hear. Seagate apparently thinks this is "normal" for enterprise HDDs, so they're not replacing jack shit. If it wasn't for that awful noise, I'd recommend them, but as it is? Fuck that shit, do not buy.
>>103282603Damn, I knew I should avoid exos, they have the lowest €/Tb for a reason

>>103295113From someone who has had to deal with Toshiba drives at work before: YES. Even considering that they're meant to be used in an environment where you're wearing hearing protection anyways they are still insanely fucking loud. Especially the really high capacity (18TB+) ones.
I have a 16TB Ironwolf Pro and it's way too noisy and LOUD.I think the newer drives have too many platters in them to be quiet like smaller capacity drives.I use this command to power it off:udisksctl power-off -b /dev/sdb
>>103292089It decreases friction, which decreases head production and improves performance. Not under normal circumstances, as He drives are hermetically sealed. They can leak, but the SMART screams at you about this.
