I work in the power trading business. Our company owns two nuclear power plants and solar power is basically destroying the business case. Nukes aren't worthwhile in summer months because electricity supply exceeds demands and due to grid stability issues, overproduction is heavily penalized by the markets, i.e. negative prices.

The catch is that A) You have to DIY. B) You can't just call a warranty or service people if shit breaks down or just sue someone else if you damage something. C) It's not fool-proof you have to actually research which products are good and what the battery arrays and connections are gonna be.

For me, all those were easy. Start small, maybe even a single 12V panel, a controller, and a single 12V battery cell and finally an inverter. Then you can buy one more of each, wire each in serial and you're up to 24V with double the power and capacity and way higher efficiency. Run some numbers, get some measurements, decide if you're happy with the mounting, housing, looks, gains etc... then scale up to your needs.

Companies like to make it seem as if it were some monolithic construction job, but it's literally middle school level electronics with medium-tier DIY know how to get started (would be baby-tier if you're not going on the roof).

The lithium fires stuff is a serious concern for EVs, not so much for houses. Lithium battery fires aren't just random. It's when the battery gets punctured, or when two batteries touch each other without insulation and short and suddenly they get hot enough to burn. You can surely see why that's an issue with all the vibration and potential collisions in a scooter. In a home, as long as you don't rely on the chink temp safeties and instead use your own temperature-sensor and auto shutoff switch the risk is zero outside a fire/natural disaster scenario.

But clearly, you have no idea of how the energy market works and what the seasonal changes to the vertical load on the grid look like. Power consumption in colder months is higher than in warmer months. Outside temperature has a strong (negative) correlation with power spot prices.

In any case: Dynamic residential customer pricing will have to be part of the energy transition to renewables. Which essentially means, AC will be free in the future, since you're only going to use it during times of excess solar radiation. Consumers will have to be incentivized to use the excess power from solar generation and penalized during seasons with less radiation. I.e. charging your EV will be virtually free (or you'll even get paid for it) in summer and painfully expensive in winter. And the only way to incentivize someone to do something is through their wallets. However, this requires a substantial upgrade in grid infrastructure.
