Your old, repairable hardware will boot faster, you will be free from all sorts of nasty component whitelists and you can even build your own custom rom with a few selected payloads (I did this with tianocore). Ideally public domain software is best, since once it's out there no one can ever stop you from using it, but permissively licensed or copyleft software will serve as long as the means to distribute, modify, and reuse it are available to the public.
