How tf do you even have any positive reference? Jfl

For me it would be really hard to find even one colleague who would speak positively about me.

It is important as workers to do everything possible to avoid metrics. The less objectively measurable your work, the better. This allows you to hide information from your employers, and information is power.

You want an example of metric hell? Just look at call centres, those motherfuckers have it down to a science and it's hell for the worker.

$150k/year in a super LCOL area (rural Southeast US). I went a whole month with 0 income buffered by savings. Thankfully I saved a little emergency fund for that very moment. Oct 8 was my last day, a week or so from now will be my first day. Yippee!

do you have a ton of money in illiquid assets or a lot of debt? No offense but I am surprised to hear someone in the tech industry saying a month off would be an issue, curious what your situation is. Grats on the job fellow soufman. Not having to pay big city rents is based. I moved back home (Georgia) from NYC and my rent more than halved.
>>
>>107170019
What's worse is that these are people who make enough money to have at the very least college and their car paid off within 3 years of working. So taking time off of work voluntary or not hurts them alot faster than it would if they didn't have any debt.
>>
I want a new job but I feel like I should be holding on to my current one so I don't start over at the bottom of the totem pole
>>
>>107170058
It's not necessarily at the bottom of the totem pole. Some companies see your experience and put you higher up on their totem since you have some angle of knowledge that they otherwise would not. FAGMAN has it to the point were people leave after 2-4 years then come back even higher than they would if they tried to climb that ladder. Or they get a masters degree for a break from work then come back as some SR or manager.
>>
>>107169989
Like I said, I can't afford Americans. I need anyone from anywhere, completely remote. Isnt $50k a lot in some shitholes like in Europe or whatever? I assume some shitholes still have decent devs that want a chill remote gig?
>>107170014
Not everyone on here is American tho
>>
>>107170058
Do you like your current one? Is it stressful? If you are in career climb mode it may be worth it to jump but if not the job market is currently a pain in the ass. I want a new job but my current one has burned me out hard and it's hard to find any motivation to interview while still working and I'm not even sure I wouldn't just immediately bounce out of my next job if I went straight to it. I have plenty of savings but I have a mental block against being unemployed.

>>
>>107171744
do you know what an example is? Consumer goods (incl groceries) are a very big part of expenses. Yurop is usually much more expensive due to taxes. You are left with services. Online services are priced roughly the same, independent of your country. Offline services vary, difference comes down to quality. Also, most westerners have the option for the cheap ones if they so wish see x-tourism, the vice versa is not true.
>>
>>107171643
Note that if you wanna go into Europe and spend only $50k/year, it comes out to a smaller salary since there's a bunch of taxes the employer has to pay before it goes into a salary. So if an employee earns $50k before tax, the employer might be spending closer to $75k (salary + side costs).

One of the questions they're asking is if I'll need help relocating to their offices if I was given an offer.
What should I put? Obviously I'm going to need help. Im 23 and have a few thousand dollars in my bank account and even more credit card debt. I can get my family to help me out with the move but It would be 10x better if they could help me out.

What the fuck is this normie shit. JFL at 4chan outside of r9k.

I work like 10h a week. I could get more done by working for longer, but if I consistently work this much, they get an idea of what to expect and don't give me more tasks (this is part of a manager's job), and this way I get enough done to not get fired. I am good at programming too, fell in love with it since I was 13 years old.

I could be ambitious in terms of money or career success, but I choose to be ambitious in terms of free time, and be close enough to the NEETGOD life while making a software dev salary.

You're bullying me for saying I am disliked, but I am not that bad, I spend years at a time on the same job, and for example, I was just on a call with a coworker, and helped him debug a problem he couldn't figure out, and we figured it out together.

However, normies can tell when someone is coasting. Probably more due to attitude and vibe than actual output. I eventually get fired from jobs at some point or another, I don't leave them, which is where fake references come in, as well as interviewing skills to get raises when that happens (plus severance pay, which is very good in Europe due to labor laws).

If being disliked by normies is bad, then what am I supposed to do? Be a good boy and work much longer for no reason? Be fucking stupid like them and don't play the system at all?

Last year my boss told me the CFO had new pto rules when my contract stated I had unlimited. He then tried to retroactively apply it to me and said I had used all of my PTO in August.
Went to HR immediately. That same day they were on a call, and he suddenly changed the status of my new requests from declined to accepted and we never spoke about it until the new year rolled over.

Most managers genuinely are just absolute fucking morons.
>>

I just told them it was a violation of what I and the business signed and that it wasn't fair to try and apply a new PTO rule to me that limited my PTO severely in the MIDDLE of the year.

Turned out the CFO didn't tell him to go and try to apply it to everyone in the middle of the year, he decided that on his own.

>being a decent worker = being a normie
shut the fuck up, retard. just accept you are fucking retarded and worse than mediocre. if you can't get references from ex coworkers, it's not because 4chan culture, because you are disliked, coasting or whatever. no one gives a shit about any of that. (You) are the problem.
>>
>>107172356
>unlimited pto
The concept alone is stupid, it just means you have 0 PTO by default and have to always ask for more leave. I'd even go a step futher and say that any system where you can convert PTO days to extra salary at the end of the year means you do not actually have fully paid time off.
Thank god I live in a country with a mandatory minimum of PTO.
>>
>>107172631

Cope and seethe.

You can't even make a logically consistent point. You say it's not because I am coasting, but it is because I am the problem. Well then, if coasting and doing the minimum is not a problem, then I am not doing anything wrong, and normies just bully me for no reason.

You're right in that HR is there to protect the business, but its exactly this reason you should speak to them when you know somebody is fucking with you or management is doing something to you that you know they shouldn't/can't because HR wants to prevent lawsuits. So if you know you're in the right, they'll be VERY happy to help you most of the time.

HR is basically there to slap overstepping managers repeatedly, because that ends up being 90% of their job.

>>107172633
Only one company truly allowed me to actually use my unlimited PTO for real, but they went under. You're right in that it basically exists to avoid converting unused time off.
>>
>>107172651
you are so fucking stupid, you don't even understand the point of references. if none of your ex coworkers is willing to be your reference, it's because they wouldn't risk their reputation to help you.
think about it.

>Cope and seethe.
I'm not the one who has trouble getting references lmao. my ex coworkers know I'm a fucking asshole when I want to be an asshole. my current coworkers also know I spent long months doing nothing at all when I joined this company. even then, I know for sure they all would absolutely recommend me to prospective employers.

sucks to suck :^)

I don't care you fucking normie.

I don't want to be liked by normies. I loathe them. I think I am better than them, so when they dislike me, it means nothing to me. I think that they are less intelligent than me. Do you understand that? And I am proud of facing no repercussions when they don't like me, because I just ask discord friends to be my "reference".

I hate to be this blunt, but I literally just said I can't get good references so I fake them, and you started bullying me.

To me, coasting on remote jobs is not negotiable. I do not want to work more than 2-3 hours 2-3 days a week. And I won't because I am better than other people.

Wanna know something worse? My company switched from unlimited PTO to flexible.

Unlimited pto is already bad.
Flexible is significantly worse.
Our new guidelines state we can take as much time as we need "as long as we're reasonable" and as long as "it doesn't interfere with business needs". The second one is the key point. They can essentially indefinitely deny people's PTO requests in my state, it also makes it so that in my state they don't have to pay out accrued PTO since theres no technical cap being set.

My manager has leveraged this against me twice now and theres nothing I can do about it. They essentially can (try to) force me to work indefinitely with no time off ever. They did this so they could do mass layoffs without having to worry about paying out time because state law says you have to.
>>
>>107172782

>normie
lmao, this retard fell hard for the internet culture bs

>I don't want to be liked by normies
>they don't like me
not being liked doesn't mean having them hate you, retard. they are your coworkers, not your friends. if you can't even get references from them it's because you must be a terrible coworker, a terrible WORKER and a terrible PERSON. no wonder you can't get references kek

>you started bullying me
>bawww
not only you must be a terrible coworker, you also victimize yourself.

>I'm entitled to wasting company time
how about, instead of doing that, you find another job that allows you to do that?
oh wait, you can't even get references...

>>
>>107172800
America is such a third world country lmao.
>>
>>107172782

You are misunderstanding me. I spend years at a time at the same job. It's not like I am extremely insufferable and everyone hates me.

At the one I am currently at, they like me, and it may be the one where they don't actually fire me and I end up leaving by myself, or I even get a raise in it.

It's just that normies are typically obedient to corporate and very submissive wagies, so they can tell I am coasting and don't like that. Eventually, one of them may start talking shit about me, and that's where things start to go down, I get a few meetings with HR, and eventually get fired.

That's how it worked at my previous two jobs, basically they generally disliked that I was not trying very hard / they could tell I did the minimum, and they were ok with it, until one of them wasn't and he started talking shit and then the others started disliking me too.
>>
>>107172808
if nobody is willing to give you a reference then you are objectively the problem
it has nothing to do with coasting or whatever excuse some tard with a victim complex wants to make it about, nobody cares about coasting unless you are actively a negative influence on the sprint and that's not coasting that's sabotage and makes everyone else have to work harder
it just implies such a deficit in social skills and negative personality traits that I wouldn't be surprised if that guy gets filtered on the HR rounds
>>
>>107172808
I get tasks done. If someone tells me "we need this by the end of the week", with me, it will be reliably delivered before the end of the week. I do not introduce bugs to the codebase or code that's hard to work with. They literally just get worked up over my attitude/vibe because they can tell I am not very invested in the job and just want a stable wage, and they want me to try hard to get promotions or something. They are ok with this for a while because things get done, until they aren't.

So what do you call that? Am I "walking over the team"?
>>

>>
>>107172895

>>107172837

btw, when normies do this, i am sure they believe their bad references matter, and i will never be able to get a job again, or something. in reality i dont care at all and i still have very good (fake) references
>>
>>107172724
we don't have a tribal in-group preference by our peers who will provide references to literally anyone in their own tribe, regardless of actual experience (yes I'm saying Indians constantly get fake references)
>>
>>107172570
If it’s in writing and they don’t want to honour it, it’s a breach of contract. It’s that simple.
>>
>>107172914
I mean it could be the opposite. I've seen jobs where people burn out into being assholes when they were pretty high performers.
>>
>>107172914

At one place they were absolutely seething because I left and many things relied on me. They obviously wouldn't help me get another job.

At two others, things basically went to shit due to one normie talking shit behind my back and spreading brainrot to the others. One of them didn't even give me time to learn the codebase there, and the project wasn't even working in my computer anyway. At the other I was objectively delivering within deadlines and had the job for 4 years until that happened.

At my current job, they are ok with me, but I think that they think I am not trying very hard / doing the minimum, won't want to give me a raise, and wouldn't give a very good reference.

It literally is that they are into the corporate rat ladder and look down on me because I'm not. When you say that multiple people disliking me proves that I am the problem, that's basically mob rule logic. Multiple people can be wrong.
>>
>>107172837
>It's just that normies are typically obedient to corporate and very submissive wagies,
stop making shit up. if there are people that are NOT like this, it's tech workers in general. even during hard times, tech people usually know their value, and are smart enough to know that they can just quit and move elsewhere if/whenever they want.
except the mediocre, technically shitty retards, of course. those are gatekept from getting other jobs.
if other retards are bad mouthing you, then make sure to be available when they contact you and to have good excuses for not being able to start working immediately. also don't overdo the coasting maybe? hell, you could tell your employer that you only want to work 3 days a week or 4 hours a day and they might accept that (for a lower pay of course). you seem so mentally rigid, I bet you hadn't thought of that alternative.

Genuine question, is anyone itt even "ok" with their job anymore? Does anyone actually have a chill engineering job where they're left to do some modest work, not micromanaged, not harassed by retard managers or jeets or whatever else? Is there any comfy left in this entire industry?

Jw cause I've struck out twice in a row. It's like the asshole levels have turned up by 500% in the past few years. Currently working at a place that wants to simultaneously rush engineers into getting as much work done as possible but also make it as hard as possible to actually get work done with the endless restrictions, meetings, PRs and filters.
>>
>>107172977
fuck jobs
Been doing this 20 years, i'm not even that old but nothing ever changes for the better, it only gets worse. There is no chill. The new generations of managers are even worse than the old ones. They're all faggots and slave drivers.
The trick is to only care about work during business hours. The rest of the time it can fuck off. Live your life for something real and dgaf about jobs.
>>
>>107172931

Correct, we have no network or community at all, which is why no one anywhere would know or care if you told your boss to fuck himself in the ass right before quitting lol
>>
>>107172962

I am not interested in that alternative lmao. In fact I've been recently thinking of making much more money. So far I've been just taking market price for my levels of experience, I've been thinking of rewriting my resume to brand myself as an exceptional dev, or a team lead, and get higher pay at my next job, when they fire me from this one, or eventually leave if they don't.

But that's a whole different story.

I am not technically shit by any stretch of the imagination. I love programming since I was 13. I get a lot done in very few hours of work. And technical skills have never been a problem. Whenever I get a leetcode or programming type test in an interview, I know that's going to play to my advantage vs a social skills type of interview.

You say tech workers are not submissive wagies who want to make their boss happy, because you have different standards of what that means. But from my point of view, they are like that, because they keep getting mad at me for not trying hard.

have you ever thought that, maybe, you have terrible habits, have been carrying them ever since you were a kid and your coworkers hate you for that?

>you have different standards of what that means
I directly tell my boss that I'm not content and that if they want to lay me off, they can do so because it would be a very good thing for me. I tell my coworkers not to defend the company because we are not slaves. we all work remote, wake up at like 10am and dgaf about RTO.

have you ever tried having an honest talk with your coworkers? sounds to me like you just want to complain, play the victim and justify your shitty habits, even though you tell yourself that you are technically good. also, quit the

It sounds like you're mad at me for no reason, for saying on 4chan that my coworkers don't like me, which doesn't even affect you. This kind of proves my point about how people are. Sometimes they were right and I was taking the coasting too far (eg sleeping in and not responding on teams), other times I was doing nothing objectively wrong and one normie still started spreading brainrot about me, and that got me fired. It's kind of 50/50. You are actually partly right in that I did make mistakes.

But let's talk about this point in particular:

>have you ever tried having an honest talk with your coworkers?

This one is tricky. I am in Europe like I said, and there's very rigid labor laws. It's better for me to not say anything and just and let them do their thing (as in, talk about me, have a few stupid HR meetings, before actually firing me when they feel ready or whatever), than having an honest talk and saying something they could record and use against me.

For example, at my last job, if I had had an honest talk with them to make amends, it would have to be kind of along these lines "I made mistakes, you were unfair to me too taking shit when I was actually doing nothing wrong, let's both agree to work on that and get along from now on". And this could be very bad for me legally. It ended well for me in terms of severance pay because I did not talk to them and said nothing substantial in meetings about the "problem".

Anyway. I am now careful about not taking it too far, who knows, maybe I'm just saying all this due to my last two jobs which made me bitter as fuck (you wouldn't believe how insufferable they were, but I know you'll say it was my fault). I no longer sleep in and I am available during the time I am supposed to. I keep a plausible level of performance at all times, and keep appearances in terms of how I communicate with them. I deliver very good quality, and they appreciate it. They may even give me a raise at this one, you never know
