I'm a NEET so I have the time to moderate one. When does it become costly when it comes to images?
>>108192913'bout tree fiddy
depends on the traffic you dimwit. This board is probably 50k a month in bandwidth and it's running on fumes pretty much. There are two paid employees who earn under 5k a month.
>>108192928>depends on the traffic you dimwit. That is why I'm asking when does it become costly. I'm assuming that there are people browsing who have had a hand in running an imageboard, so maybe they could give me estimates of how much it cost them.
I always see a million imageboard owners come out of nowhere when a thread is about altchans but for some reason it is a ghost town when I make a thread. Okay.
>>108193277Life's a bitch and then you die
>>108192928>This board is probably 50k a month in bandwidthThis could be at least halved if they got rid of the catalog.
>>108193951How does having a catalog increase the cost? You are supposed to browse threads through the index?
>>108192928How does it make enough to stay alive? Is that tiny ad banner space worth so much?
>>108192913Run an imageboard without images and it will cost $5/mo tops.
Why don't image boards let people post a link and embed the image? Like imgur, catbox etc. I know these sites technically don't let you use them as a CDN but for a small imageboard I'd imagine it would go unnoticed.
>>108192928you could store the images on cloudflare R2 free plan, it offers 10GB of storage with no egress cost at all and your small imageboard would probably never lit the api limit. or you can just pay for a vps with unlimited traffic
It's not worth it, regardless of cost of money. Being an admin sounds fun in all, until you realize you're a steward and you pay the bills.
>>108192913Lambdaplusjs costs essentially nothing since it's self-hosted and on Tor. If you don't want to self-host, you'll need a server, which you can get for less than $10/month. You don't need something more expensive unless your board suddenly becomes super popular (spoiler: it won't). BY FAR the biggest expense in running a board is your time moderating the thing. The actual money is going to be totally insignificant in comparison.>>108194112It's been done, but I would expect involving an extra third party in your website that can shut you down if they decide they don't want you would be a lot more trouble than it's worth.
>>108192913It will cost you practically nothing because you'll only have a handful of posts a month if you're lucky.
>>108192913How big are your images?
>>108192913Basically nothing until you start getting some real traffic.
>>108192913>When does it become costly when it comes to images?Depends on a lotta factors. Just images? Or you including video too? You got limits to upload sizes? You keepin' this forever?Storage will be a concern rapidly, there will be things you can do to limit impact, some clues have already been mentioned.Next up the actual users themselves. How many we talkin? A couple o hundred spread across the globe could prolly be served by a raspberry pi for real cheaps. But once you start thinkin' load balancers and distributing costs amplify - why so many bend over for cloudflare's rapage. Then the user's *behaviours*. Typically users have proven untrustable. Expect a lot of time to spend here. Frequently this is distributed across individuals, aka moderation team, which *can* be done costless, but you really want to be very sure of *who* you give *what* powers...>give me estimates of how much it cost them.Literally depends on what you doin'. how much you payin' per server, etc...>>108194068>How does it make enough to stay alive?Donations. It's "within interest" to keep somewhere like here alive. It puts a lot of reprobates into a nice easily monitored silo. You get rid of this and they'll disperse to various facets of the intelliwebs...
https://hej.lolThis is not really an image board but allows file uploads. You can tweak to force smaller files and have dropout like 4chan.It costs me $6/month for a vps. It'll never gain traction, so I don't worry about it's 20gb capacity. If it does get users, I'll just move it to host off bare metal through a reverse proxy to keep costs low.
Don't bother, last thing the world needs is another empty imageboard.
>>108193988That's how we used to do it back in the day, and it was complete SHIT.
>>108192913setting up and running a image board is easy. its the liability of whats posted thats a pain.
>>108196103The catalog doesn't add much overhead. It's the same photos, and if you lazy load the assets you don't need the bandwidth until the user scrolls.Maybe there's an argument to be made that it's more likely a user will scroll to the bottom, but also you can have thumbnails to display in the catalog so the overall bandwidth is quite small until someone actually clicks into the thread.
>>108196110yuppretty much thisyou are ultimately responsible for the fucked up shit that is posted and or said on your website and considering that you are not going to get anything in return, it really is not worth iti wouldn't buy 4chan even if i was a billionaire and they were selling it to me for 10 dollars
>>108196198As long as you are responsive to dmca request and have a report button, what's the problem?
>>108192913If you self-host, your running costs are internet and electricity. If you live somewhere like the nordics where both are extremely cheap, running costs of a self-hosted solution is like 20-40€/m and you get gigabit internet at home.Picrel now runs my services. Fits a 2.5" drive which is just about good enough to cover my storage requirements.
$5-$10 per monthT.4chan dot buzz
>>108192913The biggest problem is dealing with Jews and Feds who will spam your board with child-porn to get it taken down.
