Why don't image boards let people post a link and embed the image? Like imgur, catbox etc. I know these sites technically don't let you use them as a CDN but for a small imageboard I'd imagine it would go unnoticed.

https://hej.lolThis is not really an image board but allows file uploads. You can tweak to force smaller files and have dropout like 4chan.It costs me $6/month for a vps. It'll never gain traction, so I don't worry about it's 20gb capacity. If it does get users, I'll just move it to host off bare metal through a reverse proxy to keep costs low.
Don't bother, last thing the world needs is another empty imageboard.

It's the same photos, and if you lazy load the assets you don't need the bandwidth until the user scrolls.Maybe there's an argument to be made that it's more likely a user will scroll to the bottom, but also you can have thumbnails to display in the catalog so the overall bandwidth is quite small until someone actually clicks into the thread.

If you live somewhere like the nordics where both are extremely cheap, running costs of a self-hosted solution is like 20-40€/m and you get gigabit internet at home.Picrel now runs my services.
