As an Eastern European zoomer, smartphones were banned in my schools for most of my time in one until enforcement became more relaxed as teachers themselves adopted them. Hell, even regular dumb brick phones you had to keep hidden or silenced or else they might get confiscated.

In hindsight, as exciting as my first smartphone being a Moto G3, it was the first domino to fall in my journey to damnation. Because that power ends up getting abused. I was fine before a smartphone, the computer and the rules of a computer were simple enough to follow before a smartphone.

It's completely possible to lock down a phone enough that it can only be used to chat with people you already know, take pictures (which get automatically backed up so the parents know what they're taking pictures of), etc. 99% of the time they aren't set up that way, but Linus is in the 1% of parents who can and will. People have snapped straight from "give the kids unlimited internet devices, what could go wrong" to "phones are radioactive waste, ban them completely".
(Caveat, if the kids are smart and very technically inclined then they can admittedly probably work around the restrictions.)
