I have the following conundrum:I know that one of my coworkers will be fired. the guy sucks technically speaking, but he has a kid.I wish to tell him. I want him to be prepared. another factor is that he's trying to move to the office from another city, and so he might end up wasting money.I don't know if someone else knows about his firing, so I can't tell him directly, not even anonymously, because if he says anything I would get doxxed pretty fast, probably. how would you warn him, or dissuade him from moving, without exposing yourself?
My favorite coworker who was like the team mom got sacked, I don't care if her work was shit now I have 0 morale since then and these whole projects can go to fucking hell.

>>108452850Its hard to say. I once told my female coworker something in confidence about something only me and someone else knew and she instantly blew my cover. Afterwards when I basically went "What the fuck is your problem? If you do this then no one will ever tell you anything" and she got mad at me as if she did nothing wrong.Based on my own experience I would say keep quiet, not everyone knows how or that they should keep mum on things and this good deed that you are trying to do will blow up in your face.

>>108453128what labor law does telling someone theyre about to be fired violate?yeah its obviously not good if they find out you told him. if your assumption is that he will immediately start manufacturing evidence for wrongful termination on hearing it, then you have answered your own question: dont do anything. or did you expect someone to teach you how to astrally project inside his head to plant the idea without him knowing?
>>108453229Have you tried getting into a trade?
>>108452850Fired or laid off? Firing someone takes time, and there needs to be documented steps to correct performance unless he went streaking through the office or something. If it's performance related, he already knows he's doing a shit job and being fired shouldn't come as a surprise. Unless you're in the chain of command you probably shouldn't be privy to it at all, so about the only thing you might do is make sure his manager is aware he's trying to move and all that. Don't tell the guy himself, there's the chance he'll go loose cannon and sabotage stuff, get caught, and then squeal on you for telling him.
>>108453243>dont do anything. or did you expect someone to teach you how to astrally project inside his head to plant the idea without him knowing?I guess I could be subtle enough about it in a way that he only realizes later, or just try to dissuade him from wasting more time and money.>>108453249>Fired or laid off?I don't know, but I assume he'll be laid off. in any case, in my country any worker can sue for being laid off or fired, and he might even win.>you probably shouldn't be privy to it at allI know, boss told me it's confidential info>make sure his manager is aware he's trying to move and all thatI don't think the boss cares much. there have been similar instances in the past.>Don't tell the guy himself, there's the chance he'll go loose cannon and sabotage stuff, get caught, and then squeal on you for telling him.right. like I told the other anon, I'd need to be subtle.or maybe I should stop worrying about him. shit sucks though.

the first job i got out of college (and i'm still in) is basically a joke benchwarming programming job. we don't have centralized repositories. we use gitlab and azure and some internal system for hosting shit and a lot of people just keep code on their local machines or on a physical server they ssh into. no one really checks up on me or requires much, so i basically just drag my feet on projects and as long as i am apparently making progress, it's fine. i'm hybrid and on days when i'm at home i can just sleep in until like noon and hold down a button on my keyboard to keep teams active. how atypical is this as a job? part of me feels like i'm rotting if i stay here and i'm worried i'm going to lose skills. but the other part of me likes being able to watch youtube videos in bed and get paid for it. if i get another job will i be able to find one like this again or is this rare?
Should I join the military

>>108453976i'm 30 and part of me wishes i did. i'd like to have gone for something noncombat like 35N and try to get a 3 year contract. if i'd have done that right after high school, i could have probably done some fun shit and gotten a clearance out of it, and gotten tuition paid for. i could have gone to a better school but out of state tuition is crazy so i just went to a state one, and i think that sucks. i think if you went to a school with smart people at it, you'd probably make friends with those people and it's useful for progressing your life.because the people i'm friends with were the people i went to school with.
>>108453976Assuming you're in the US:I was in the Navy from 2016-2020 as an IT and I would advise against it. It does largely depend on your life circumstances and personality, though. For me, I was broke, young, with no education/experience, and no one to help me. If your life situation is like that, the military is a good starting point for your career because you get training and work experience and you can get certs/college paid for. But if you've already got the funding for certs/college, or the opportunity to acquire experience in the field without the military, I'd suggest taking that first.I was also a poor fit personality wise for the military. I'm one to question the "why" of things, and to see inefficiencies in a corporate system and call them out. If you can stand someone with an obvious lust for power telling you to do things just to have control over you (legitimate psycho/sociopaths) without a real purpose, or you aren't able to identify such things, then you could be a good fit otherwise you'll probably be miserable for 4 years.
>>108453988I'm employed and happily NOT single thank you very muchwouldn't mind if the Mrs let me pound some of that zoomer punani though...
sirs 1 questionCurrently i have almost 10 yoe and im employed. my job is nice and sometimes i have nothing to do all week, only problem is i need to go to the office 3x/week. My pay is good but i was thinking if i could get a similar job 100% wfh, then eventually i could get another one and end up earning way more than today even if both pay less than my current job. So i will start focusing on get a wfh job. My stack and most of my experience is backend finance w spring ecosystem, angular, aws, azure, db2/ms sql, quality gates, autosys and cicd. Can i go with this or this stack is too entrepisy for a wfh job? Do i need to learn tools used by smaller corps like kotlin, react, vue and focus on fullstack?

>>108452850m8, you said he's already a bad developer, but he's also obtuse on top of that. All young men are naïve like that and have to learn, you're not his dad. If you want to at the minimum, you can give him some blanket advice about "always having a backup in these times" or "I've always thought what if I get fired..." or something like that, but don't put your own integrity on the line for him. You've been trusted by your managers enough that they'll tell you who they're going to fire, if you go behind their back and tell this young guy what they told you (a person they like enough to NOT fire), they're not going to trust you very much in the future. Secondly, if your managers tell people who they're going to fire before doing so, take that as a precaution about how they're potentially going to act to you in the future when they want to can you too. aka, they'll probably tell someone else and not tell you first, and then spring it on you.
>>108454314most companies won't allow you to get another job if you're employed with them as wfh full-time, otherwise you get firedit's especially bad if you break a non-compete clausebut you wouldn't be the first person to ever get two full-time tech jobs at the same timeit sounds too stressful for someone like me who enjoys laying back with frequent breaks but still has to deal with high demand of unclear tasks

>>108455713This will come for a lot of us soon enough. At my place there has been this huge push to get everyone using AI and building MCP, claude skills, plugins for everything. People are working harder than before even with AI assistance as no one wants to get left behind and lose their job. >>108455820>What do Principals even do? Just the word for the engineer who's in charge. If it's a huge company, senior doesn't cut it because you have lots of senior devs. Lead might not either since there's probably one for each department. Think principal is supposed to be the top dev at the company who I'm at a small company, my title is principal even though I'm the only engineer. Bosses weren't going for "lead" and IMO lead more firmly implies there are people under you. I wanted a title higher than senior since "senior" too often means some 25 year old. Principal seemed like a good word to imply complete ownership over our projects and systems, someone who calls the shots on hardware and tech stack on top of building it all. Probably a little inflated, but if you've looked at LinkedIn in the last five years, basically everyone is calling themselves an executive or a chief, even when the company is three people.

If you start talking to workers about who's getting fired and whatnot, it could be labeled as interruption of a businesses or sabotage (just think of the grimiest kike fucker lawyer, I'm just saying that's something they could possibly label what you're doing as). So just be quiet and let the guy get fired. You're not his dad, it's not your business, and you just said you're not even his friend. If he knocked up some chick I'm sure he has testicles enough to take care of himself. But more realistically, it would just piss off your manager, even if you already hate him. If I was your boss and I told you I was going to fire some chump because he's dead weight and a waste of money, and then I found out you immediately ran to him and told him, then I'm going to think you're an underhanded weasel and it would piss me off. If you want to be a good person, I recommend you tell your boss that this guy has a kid, and that you think he deserves at least a heads up before he's laid off. Then you can leave that decision in your manager's hands and leave it at that, that's the best you can do.

>>108455262>Any advice on professional development?elaborate. You want to be a paid software dev? >Should I go for a masters degree or pursue certifications? Both can you make you more competitive and standout and that will help, but, more people are thinking that too, and universities are offering more masters to people to take advantage of this (especially incoming Indians so they can stay in the US). They're ultimately not required but the bar is slowly rising to where more people are going to have them and you may have to get them too. Skills trump all though, companies always value rockstars. Also, depends on what sector you want to work in. CS Ed needs master's or PhD, certain DoD work needs master's, most IT work doesn't need anything, most regular software dev jobs require a bachelor's unless you're a super rockstar.
>>108455713AI tech is here to stay and you either learn to grift with it, program with it, or you leave the field. If AI replaces programmers then all white-collar work gets replaced with them. So in that case you'll have to be a farmer again just like your ancestors.

You can't do America without a car unless you live in a handful of cities.Even then, it so drastically reduces your job options, it's not really worth it.If you want to live without a car, you get the job in the walkable area, then move there and get rid of the car. Even then, keep an emergency fund because if you lose your job, not having a car will fuck you.Source: lost my job living in philly. 80% of job openings for what I do were in some suburb inaccessible by public transit.
>>108453975I know the feeling anon, and honestly do the jump.If you get laid off, how do you think an interview would go? My last job was exactly like this: late stage startup, 30min daily sessions, 15 minutes of actual work, keep an eye on slack and otherwise do whatever I wanted, from naps, to YouTube, to eating out, to vydia. I was the most productive guy on the team (Rails backend dev) but when my manager hinted for a senior promotion and something like >>108453494 happened, I knew I needed to jump boat.A friend told me about a cybersec job which he thought I would be a great fit, and for the next 6 months I dived in on TryHackMe and scheduled an interview.Still working on the new job, making 3x as much (plus many productivity bonus since I'm the only one automating my job away) and I know that if I got laid off I could bounce back quickly.I don't have as much free time as before, but I still fuck around on my free time and no one bats an eye, as long as I keep delivering (besides it's remote, so peak comfy)

>>108457454>a bachelor's doesnt stand out on a resume anymore. I figure if I get my masters in will look better than most other devs who just got their bachelor'sa bachelor's hasn't stood out for a while, it's just a hoop/checkmark today. A master's stands out now, but soon, it might become a checkmark as well, and then bachelor's will be as useful as a cert. >but I worry the student loans wont be worth it.I highly recommend you get one of the cheap ones, like Georgia Tech's (OMSCS). The real cost though doesn't come from just the degree. With most master's degrees, JUST the classes by themselves... in total it costs anywhere from $10k-$50k (usually it's 12 classes). It's the cost of living that's really expensive, because it takes time to get that degree and during you have to pay rent and food. On average it's 2 years to get a master's, so you'll have 2 years of living expenses too.

So long as you seem to be doing approximately 40 hours and more importantly actually get work done it doesn't fucking matter. I never bother to use PTO unless I'm gonna be out the entire day.
