People shat on the Steam Deck for the same underpowered locked specks bullshit, yet it was still successful (up until the recent price hike).
>Who the hell is this for? Nothing about this is compelling
Me.
It'll sit under my TV, unobtrusively. When I get home from work, I don't care to sit at my desk and game (that's reserved for the weekend), thus I purchased the Deck. The Deck is nice for handheld mode but is lacking when I dock it to my TV. This is the little 1080/1440p powerhouse I needed. What I don't need is a 4K 120fps, ultra settings box, that'll be radiating heat & noise sitting in my living room.
>Besten by any custom PC for the same price
I'm not willing to waste time trying to find the perfect deals to build a SFF PC, that'll likely be $30 cheaper than the GabeCube.
>Even besten by prebuilts in price/perf
Sure, if I wanted an ATX build.
>Cannot be upgraded
That's fine. The Deck can't be upgraded, but updates over the years fixed a lot of problems, and devs actually optimizing their bloated games made more of my backlog playable.
>Gamble whether you'll get dual or single channel ram
Add another or swap out both sticks when you can find/afford them.
>Terrible value as a PC
To you. Personally, It'll be sitting under my TV hosting my games directly. If I need the juice to run a AAA game on it, nothing is stopping me from streaming it from my main rig to the GabeCube.
>Even worse value as a console
It was never trying to be a console. It's a SFF PC with a few console convinces (like: Big Picture Mode, wake with controller).
>Even the OS can be installed onto any computer
Yes, you are right. Feel free to do so. However those other PCs will never be as optimized as the GabeCube. We saw this with the Steam Deck vs all the other PC handhelds that came after it. The other Handhelds had better specks, but due to Valve and game devs optimizing for the Deck, it managed to compete fairly well with the other devices for a few years.

>Pretends to not acknowledge Proton issues
Even though it has features you want and you can spend $1,050 plus tax. This doesn’t fix Proton issues, “iT wIlL bE fiX” is an excuse not an answer to the problem. Not build for Windows just as Steam Deck is unable to handle Windows. Lastly, we seen the inside of the Steam Machine, you will see heat and sound coming from it directly. You became too fixated on physical features that you forget the other factors.
>>
>>109175391
>Proton issues
Is not a problem for ME. I've been a running Fedora KDE on my main rig since 2015 and have only seen improvements in the Linux gaming space. I don't know what it's like on the Windows side anymore, nor do I care to find out.
Over the years, anything that seemed a little scuffed on Proton, could be mitigated with running ProtonGE. If GE wasn't the solution I only needed to wait for the next official Proton update or for the community to post about a fix/workaround. Meanwhile I was free to play the 600+ other games in my backlog.
Don't care for the Anti-cheat shit, as I don't play Multiplayer slop. However, I've been told that more Multiplayer games are becoming Linux friendly. I'm still never going to touch the shit.

Because the Deck will overheat after a few hours of having content streamed to it. I'm sure the GabeCube will get warm as well, but it's less likely that it'll become as hot as the surface of the sun and sound like a jet engine in your home, when pushing content to it.

I'll say steam machine is fine for what it is, the price is disappointing but some people think valve has built in a little cushioning to avoid future price shocks, at least for a while.
It's quite possible in 6 months those "steam machine killers" won't be able to match it in price at all.
But the current nature of the memory market is impossible to predict if it'll trend upwards, or fall.
>>
Ironically companies building steam machine rivals is pretty much what Valve wanted.
>>
Ohhh nooo competitors will release cheaper, more affordable versions of middle-of-the-road hardware that the less technically minded will be able to purchase and play their... Steam.. games.. on....

People didn't shit on it for being overpriced, because it wasn't.
>yet it was still successful (up until the recent price hike).
And your gabecube is already price hiked. Steam deck was decent because it was cheap and a novel form factor. It wasn't that successful in the grand scheme of things though.
>This is the little 1080/1440p powerhouse I needed.
>I'm not willing to waste time trying to find the perfect deals to build a SFF PC
This is the post-decision justifications of a fanboy.

Yeah.
A big fan that doesn't need to spin at it's max RPM is far more silent than a small fan that needs to spin at max to move the same volume of air. As a PC enthusiast, I know this.

Steam machine is a disaster, people who've been waiting for it have been deleting their steam accounts in protest, moving to other supportive forward looking platforms or giving up PC altogether.
>>
>>109175290
The Deck was $400 and it was a unique formfactor. At the time only a couple Chinese companies made similar products and they cost upwards of 2000 dollars and those companies offered little in the way of customer service so the steam deck was actually an insanely good deal.
The only thing the steam machine has going for it is size otherwise its worse than other prebuilts in every way.

Yeah I'm thinking this was a giant success. The favelado screeching because they thought they were going to finally be able to afford to own a gaming PC on Gabe's dime has been a particularly nice bonus.

There is no gamble, they're all single channel.

>>109176326
*the first batch is
No telling if the 2nd batch is going end up being dual or not due to the nature of memory supply at the moment.
>>
>>109176373
It's never going to ship dual channel, even if the ram prices decreases (and that wont be soon), valve would rather decrease the price of the thing rather than upspec it.
>>
Can I install GNU Linux on it?
>>
>>109175280
>ram and ssd being upgradeable is a meme that nobody who wants to buy this shit part shitbox will do and doesnt make the device properly upgradeable
I think the price differentiation model Apple uses for devices with more RAM and the relatively common occurance of people running out of storage on PS5 does make normie consumers more likely to seek upgrades, and there are always going to be a bunch of computer/phone/console repair shops in even a moderately small city that can do simple upgrades like that at a good profit while still undercutting large buisnesses.
>>
>>109175950
>It wasn't that successful in the grand scheme of things though.
But it was. It majorly helped with the push of Linux gaming (Proton, 2% to 5% userbase). Whilst there were a few PC handhelds (Chinkshit) before the Deck, the booming market didn't exist until after the Deck (MSI, ASUS, XBOX).
>>
Cube is dumb, then again most modern consoles are dumb. The PS4 had the perfect form factor.
>>

SteamOS is a fork of Arch Linux, They left the thing wide open for you to install whatever you want on it.

no matter how jewish, even most companies today know they cant try to sell something as bad as the goycube and get away with any sales. and im not so sure they can even get their hands on such shit tier 6 year old hardware nowadays.

OMG will you people stop assuming it will get better. Valve never lowered prices, not on the Steam Deck, not on Micro transactions, not on percentage and they never lowered VR set. Valve wants money, more money not less.

It's so gratifying to see people finally wake up and see what a shit company valve is, who monopolised gaming with their trash platform.
Pirate4life

>>
>>109176776

I can't recall them ever lowering prices on hardware, except for that one time they were phasing out the LCD steamdecks and had to clear existing stock. The Valve Index kit is still 1000$, 7 years later
>>
>>109174688
its for anti-cheat vendors if it sells
>>
>>109176497
They can just use current parts, remove the WIndows licence, put EPIC STEAM MACHINE KILLER in the description and charge a 30% premium on a entry level computer.
>>
>>109176891
I'm actually quite surprised to see the pushback on this. I know what Gayben sycophants are like - not even "NPC" adequately describes them.
It's just another spectacular failure by Valve when they try to do something outside their skillset - which has been nothing but "skimming 30% off the top of other people's work" for over a decade now.
>>
>>109174688
People who don't have a living room PC and are afraid to use Steam Link.

Eh not really. The sad truth is that it's a great deal with good tech that you cannot replicate yourself at the same wattage or temperature.

>>
>>109177565
This, it's perfectly fine as it is, delivering what it intended to.
Unfortunately they got screwed by the market.

There have been plenty of mini PCs with similar specs sold for $1k plus before the steam machine before the RAM crisis, but somehow valve are meant to be special and eat the cost or something.
>>
>>109177565

Been trying to make a mini itx build of this but it has been very hard. 17cm x 17cm but the height is slightly more.
Specs so far
Axiomtek MANO561 Mini ITX LGA1700
Gpu Intel Arc Pro B50 16gb (yeston 3050 is too underpowered)
Cpu Intel Core i5-12400F
The motherboard is hard to get outside china. Idk if it's worth it to keep the sodimm vs an itx motherboard. My estimate is that this would be around 800. 300 for the gpu, 250 for the mobo, can't forget ram costs and the itx tax on cases.
