So I bought myself one of those GBA flash carts where you can play a bunch of Gameboy games on an SD card, and I was really wanting to play Pokemon Gold. But the thing doesn't run a clock battery I guess, so the game won't keep track of time. This clock is also what makes the Gen 2 games save, so I can't manually save with the game either!Is there a solution to this? Do I have to get into the chips and replace the battery?

Some of them come with an emulator for it, others you have to attach your ROM to Goomba Color yourself. Either way it doesn't run perfectly but it's okay. And there is likely an option somewhere in the emulator in-game menu to set the emulated clock time when you start.

It retains the save in a pseudo-static RAM until you boot back into the menu system, at which point it writes it back to the file on the SD card. The cartridge doesn't have hardware inside that simulates the various flash save chips GBA carts used, buffer writes to it, and write it back to the SD. So instead they patch all ROMs to SRAM save type on loading, give it a (P)SRAM chip to write to, and then rely on software in the menu program to get it back to the SD card.Only exception I know of is the Ez-Flash Omega, which took a second or two to write it back to the SD, so people used to shutting off the power as soon as the game said it was done saving lost their saves, and Ez-Flash went back to something like the PSRAM way (but now with FRAM so it doesn't rely on the battery) with the Omega Definitive Edition.

While I'm at it I'll also tell you that clock patches for Pokemon games are pretty standard. RTC on old fashioned flash carts that existed when these games were new was an uncommon and premium feature. So as soon as these games came out people released patches allowing you to change the clock. The modern ones pretty much universally have it because they know people are just buying them to pirate Pokemon or play Pokemon rom hacks.
