Time to fire up those old laptops and give it a whirl!
>>
>>109674880
What can you do with it? (serious question)
>>

Share changelog, what's new?
>>109675100
You are the value you can provide
>>
>>109675073
Well for one thing it now has modern Firefox. Other changes include 3D acceleration through Vulkan for many modern cards, this was really holding it back for a long time. Previously the only way to get 3D was to either use 32-bit BeOS drivers for truly ancient cards, use software rendering, or use one or two experimental drivers for a tiny handful of more modern, but still older, GPUs. That's being tackled now and it's usuable finally.
>>
>>109675175
>That's being tackled now and it's usuable finally.
That's actually big, congrats to the dev team
>>
Thank you for the heads up, OP
>>
>>109674880
can I play all my steam games with it?
>>
>>109675205
Hopefully not. Mint was already fucked over by the retarded gayming community.
>>
>>109675202
Yeah it was all over the place ever since 3D hit. IIRC there was no official hardware accelerated support in BeOS except for like a handful of very very early cards. I ran it back in the day and had a Voodoo3 which IIRC was one of the very few supported cards.

>>109675205
It now has a native VM as well which will run Linux full speed, it somehow uses QEMU. Haven't checked that out yet. IIRC it's limited to one core. Possibly.
>>
>>109675269
I just wanna play my games man. If I can't I won't use it and I don't care about Mint; pretty sure gamers didn't ruin it just noobies... which is the whole point of that distro.
>>
AI is so fkin retarded
>>
>>109675290
The focus isn't on simply playing games you can already play. The idea is for people to write Haiku programs, and there are a lot of new ones, and in some cases create Haiku native ports of software like Firefox, for instance, that a desktop OS will have to have. Somebody's working on porting Serenity too now.

>>109675299
hate that shit miss me with it 100
>>
>>109675315
oh so it's a hobby os not a real workstation os. okay got it, thanks.
>>
>>109675325
Exactly, no need for globohomo to take it over like was done with Linux. So just move along...
>>
>>109675299
It'll run on that easy, it only needs 256MB RAM and 4GB of space tops.
>>
>>109675338
tempted to vibe code a bunch of haiku programs and tell my indian friends about it

I had it run on a Pentium 4 with 1.5GB of RAM for the shit and giggles and it worked, go figure.
>>
>>109675175
>for one thing it now has modern Firefox
Hm, interesting. See people sometimes come to me with an oldish weak laptop that totally can't run Win10/11 huge fatass and ask me to "make it work, I just need an internet browser" but modern fatass Linux is too sluggish too on it and ChromeOS forks don't work very well, maybe Haiku will be the solution. I'll try.
>>
>>109675299
You're fucking retarded lmao

what does this do that linux/windows doesnt

haiku has absolutely absurd responsiveness bcuz it features a highly multi-threaded kernel derived from NewOS, basically, every window, action, and system application runs on individual threads, meaning menus never "pause" and applications launch nearly instantly, even on weak or old hardware, wtf are we not using this for daily driving? where the program and software decampment for this OS goddamn it?
>>
>>109679481
>>109680133
it has inherent advantages on audio and other media and real time stuff
some radio station software it is still being mainly developed in it.
but otherwise it depends on what programs are being developed for it, so not really that much. but again for the lack of user base, not the technical merits
>>109680179
something something single user, something something security etc... the downsides are bullshit really for the desktop user

Haiku has RTX now

latency, responsiveness, media are integral part of the system

Just bought a used ThinkPad for this. I hope I still care by the time it gets here in a week.

>privacy? security? torrenting? servers?
Have you heard of personal computing? Haiku is finally a general purpose OS for about 100 people. Sky's the limit.
>>
>>109674880
Sure, I'll throw it onto an old dell. Haven't tried this in years.
>>
>>109675073
It is an Operating System, you use it to run software.
>>
>>109680179
No hardware acceleration yet, and the hardware support is abysmal.
>>
>>109683537
It has emacs too, modern one. Lots of Unix software, BeOS was (nearly) POSIX compliant by design.

This offtopic discussion comes handy: We have no fights in the Haiku community. These two here? They use Linux. If you use Linux, you are one of them.
Switch to Haiku, white man

I have an old laptop whose sole purpose is now relegated to ripping CD's because I still do that once or twice a year and have no need for a USB reader.

Can I do that from Haiku?
>>
>>109688024
should be, it is media focused
>>
>>109686253
>isn't it
It's interesting to see how some people are so cowardly and passive-aggressive even on Internet forums. Is it? Or isn't it? You sound like you want to express an opinion but you don't know if you're right or wrong, so you phrase it as a question.

Who taught you this, the Talmud?

>Can't even post on 4chan with the standard browser.
Because of Crookfags.

NTA, but
>media focused
and
>actually has the media software you’d want
Aren’t necessarily the same thing. I’ve been loosely following haiku since back in my tinkering and distrohopping days (all those fantastic tiny specialist distros for the original 7” eee-PC, those were the days!) and if I ever find the time for it (when my house is renovated, the kids don’t need that much time anymore, I’ve read my backlog of books and played my backlog of games) I’ll give it a spin.
>>
>>109689253
Nah it all came down from Epstein.
>>
>>109689241
Haven't been looking at it for a long time so I don't know, but booting it up makes it look like it's not fundamentally improved.
TL;DR I know it was, don't know if it is.
