After a long time of using LXQt, I'm trying XFCE

I'm on Debian 13 and the version of LXQt in this release doesn't support Wayland, hence the switch to XFCE, which does support Wayland in this release

Apparently Wayland is more secure than X11 because with Wayland, an application cannot see windows drawn by other applications, unlike X11

Thank you for coming to my TED talk
>>
>>109963636
Wayland is much more secure of a display server then X11 is by miles. Much more containerized, compared to X11 where every window can snoop on each other and do things like see keystrokes.

Like most technically it's hit a bit of a flat field. There's not really much to build on right now even if people want things to evolve.
Like the closest thing I guess is trying to make LLMs more and more smart? Which I guess is why so many tech people are focusing on them now (besides it mostly just being a circlejerk between like 5+ companies.)

Love Linux but what the fuck is this shit? Why are fonts so fucked up? I'm using CachyOS (I also used Arch Linux too) but I never had this fucking problem on Linux Mint. I set my minimum font size on Firefox to 16 to make things more legible but then it gives me retarded shit like picrel

That's because you're using a mis-configured gaymer meme-distro whose maintainers don't know jack shit about anything probably. I use gentoo and everything just works by default. I've never seen the fucking bullshit problems you faggots constantly whine about.
>>
>>109963483
Unsure if this belongs into sqt instead: I basically made an alias in which I have
 cmd1 "Arg it needs" | cmd2
. I wanted to use $1 instead of the arg but that just appends it to cmd2. Now I'm using a super janky way:
 alias a="cmd2 < <(cmd 1 "
and then I simply write
 "Arg it needs")

It works but does anybody have a better solution without me needing to make it a script?
>>
>>109968155
I also said I used Arch as well with the same issue. Maybe its a KDE Plasma thing? I only installed Cachy as it was easier for me than setting up Arch + KDE Plasma from scratch (I'm not talking about installing, I mean post-installation set-up).
>gentoo
hey good for you faggot
I probably should've only mentioned KDE Plasma instead of Cachy or Arch as I'm having the same issue with fonts on Debian + Plasma
>>
>>109968034
>I set my minimum font size on Firefox to 16
You're overriding website stylesheets this way. This sort of issue is expected in websites that are made by people who aren't really into frontend development, or whose knowledge of website development didn't evolve past 2001-2010. Everything on this site is measured in px, rather than relative units. So when you force a different font size on elements nothing scales.
The captcha button is set to a static height of 18px. You've set your font size to 16px, but this website uses a standard line height defined by your browser, which is usually 1.2 (translating to your text being 19.2px large). That plus the 2px button padding means you're trying to squeeze 21px worth of content into an 18px box.

It has nothing to do with your distro, Linux, your DE or even the web browser you use. It's just how web works when it's done by people who only know backend development. If you don't want websites to break then use the default browser zoom feature rather than font size overrides. Firefox supports forcing a minimum zoom level on websites and defaulting to a specific zoom level on websites.

>>109968238
Ignore the moron, he has no idea what he's talking about. This is unrelated to your OS. It's caused by you overriding the minimum font size which this site does not handle. You're expected to use it as-is, or use browser zoom, or use display scaling, or make your own stylesheet.

I think people should stop blindly suggesting alternatives like Gimp for Photoshop, or LibreOffice for MS Office.

I use Gimp and LibreOffice on a daily basis, but to suggest they are proper alternatives shows that you never used either software or you are just saying what you read online. Gimp doesn't have content-aware fill, and LibreOffice Writer doesn't support something as simple as section breaks.

If you suggest alternatives without hinting at their shortcomings, the person at the other end starts using them and gets hit with limitations and starts asking "was i trolled or something?"

Now if you suggest Blender as an alternative to 3dsmax, I can agree with this because Blender is actually a very capable program that has been used in studios and production games.

So please, if you have used programs to some extent, feel free to suggest them and point out the limitations on the Linux alternatives, and if you haven't, don't give the impression that something like Gimp can be a drop-in replacement for Photoshop.

Devuan's Apparmor profiles are schizo. Fucking man spams syslog with denying fopen()s. On Debian it's still bad, but only cupsd gets blocked.
Why is this shit misconfigured out of the box? I'm disabling this shit and purging the init script.

Mostly because this spams the TTYs while I'm trying to use them. So if I have a shell running on tty1-6 it gets this garbage on the console, sometimes while I'm in the middle of typing something.

What, uh, distro do you suggest I use just for this temporary project? And do I /need/ Ventoy if I'm already using Rufus (to format a bootable drive)?

I've got some crap to take care of today so I wanted to at least get the USB set up then I'll go through the effort of checking to see if it will discover my disk probably later tonight, if not the morning at the latest.

>>
>>109973309
>Or are they already compressed enough?
i don't think game isos have any built-in compression if they're just copies of disc contents, so it would depend on what they put on the disc and how compressible it is
i have a network share for my hacked ps2 with some isos on it, just tested compressing it and it shrank to 0.73x the size (48G -> 35G)
i'm using btrfs with the compress-force=zstd:3 mount option and compsize to see the size
if you're using an emulator, it might have support for loading isos in some compressed format so you can do that regardless of filesystem

>IIRC I set maximum swappines for ZRAM and minimal for Zswap, thought that's how it supposed to be done.
Yeah, as in 200? I'm not actually sure if it can go even over that. Faster swap devices need a higher swappiness value. The low values are for hard disks.

>Should I prefer lz4 instead?
I would, here's a benchmark I've saved. lz4 is way faster while still giving you lots of headroom from compression. This is the same for both types of compressed RAM.

Compressor name Ratio Compression Decompress.
zstd 1.5.1 -1 2.887 530 MB/s 1700 MB/s
lzo1x 2.10 -1 2.106 660 MB/s 845 MB/s
lz4 1.9.3 2.101 740 MB/s 4500 MB/s
>>

It is true that a small minority of users use it. Similar to how a minority of users use something like LXDE/LXQt instead of Plasma or GNOME. It is basically a container and server distro like Alpine.
The only thing you can do is cope by saying "Ubuntu IS Debian therefore Debian is popular", but this is almost like saying ChromeOS is Gentoo therefore Gentoo is popular.
>>
>>109972233
swappiness is supposed to reflect the speed of swap vs random filesystem access (on /bin or whatever). Which for zram means use your compression benchmark speed / your SSD's random access speed on a scale of 0-200 as a starting point (probably ~140). For zswap start with the default of 60 because swap is still normal swap. Assuming root and swap are on the same drive. Also set vm.page-cluster=0 with zram because there's no point batching IO on a RAM disk.

>>109973685
Yeah lz4 is better unless you're badly memory constrained and also don't want swap to touch storage. Like on a phone or router with dumb flash boot media.

That's your best chance of not fucking something up, yes. Disable the Linux drive in BIOS, install Windows on the other SSD, and then when the install is finished, enable the Linux drive again and you can swap between the two drives by hitting F8 on your BIOS boot screen.

Niggas, why do Intel and AMD CPUs have firmware backdoors that bypass the main OS, run even when the computer is powered off/crashed and give access to the computer's memory? Why did the NSA ask Intel for sensitive government machines to have ME removed if it wasn't a security and privacy problem? Why do Intel CPUs run its own OS with Ring -3 priority that can access the network on its own, be manipulated remotely and bypass OS and firewalls to access memory, even when my computer is turned off? WTF? Why are glowniggers like this? How am I supposed to buy a laptop now? It seems like post 2013 AMD CPUs also have similar firmware (PSP), but they don't have network access and the firmware can't be manipulated remotely, requiring a federal agent to be in physical possession of my computer or to invade it through the OS. This leads me to conclude that an AMD CPU is more tolerable if I watch my OS's security and never let my laptop out of my sight. Is my tolerant perception towards AMD mistaken? How do I guarantee my OS level security? Any application/kernel/daemon to install/build? Any distro I should check out? Should I consider OpenBSD? I know nothing about OS security besides to not use SNAP and to avoid SystemD.

Friends, whose idea was it to make Cachy based on Arch? I have a few friends who have decided "I'm gonna try Linux for gaming". Cachy is their go-to. And inevitably they find something breaks. Why? Because it's Arch with a coat of paint.

I've been using Linux since I was 16, and I'm 34 now. You know what I use? Fucking Ubuntu LTS. You know why? Because after trying my hand through other distros, I've come to realize that Ubuntu is what lets me spend the least amount of time getting shit to work. And also, if someone makes any software for Linux at all, chances are they've made a .deb package for it at the very least.

When noobies ask me what distro they want to use, I tell them Ubuntu LTS without hesitation. It'll give them the least amount of troubles, and it's the easiest for me to help them troubleshoot. And if I can't help them, the Internet will certainly be able to help them. But no, they all gotta install Cachy. Because we can't just install Nvidia drivers and Lutris on Ubuntu. No, that'd be the easy way out. And then I gotta figure out how the fuck they managed to brick things.

Also I got angry and deleted the Termux storage and Slackware 32bit iso
If I do it again I'll I stall the AP, X, XAP and possibly the XFCE series, even if it takes two days to install.

I'm in KDE, my logitech mouse keeps giving me popups that it's at 1% battery and then when I check the power applet it shows the mouse is at 55%. I changed the battery so neither are true but 55% wouldn't give me annoying popups. What do?

install a real DE/WM

I got LUKS working on my Raspberry Pi

Too much effort, but I'm glad it's finally working
>>

Never change, /g/.
>>
>>109980853
No. I either completely block updates with no intention of ever downloading them, or religiously update once a month.
>>
>>109981134
I check for updates every evening just before turning off my PC. Then I install them and turn my PC off. So everything is ready to go for when I boot the next day. This isn't for dopamine. It's because I want my PC to be secure.

i thought wayland support in xfce was still in the experimental stage?
>>
>>109982391
it is

Absolutely. 8 still lives until 2029, and even then if you're using real RHEL you can shell out some sheks if you want support until 2033.

Have you installed Solaar? Iirc it has extra udev rules for this. Works on Fedora 44 KDE with MX Master anyway.
>>
>>109983749
I'll give it a try. For now I just disabled the popup, I'll re-enable it without sound and see if Solaar helps.
>>
>>109983749
>>109984159
It still happens, idk I'll just keep the popup disabled, it's my only powered peripheral so I'll just find out the hard way when the battery runs out lmao.

is it possible to hide a user on linux? i mean not just encrypt the home drive, i mean somehow obfuscate the users existance in the first place? from things like /etc/passwd and whatnot, and obviously the home directory shouldn't even be seen from root. Somehow the mechanism of logging in with the correct credentials will unlock and reveal the account itself.

The idea is if my user1 gets compromised and the hacker gains root privs then he wont even be aware of user2
>>
>>109984635
If they have root you're cooked. To prevent that you'd have to essentially dual boot.
>>
>>109984682
hmm that sucks because i cant dual boot (i need to be able to easily switch). Oh well i guess i'll just take the risk and hope a potential would be hacker leaves my gooning user account alone.

In the new firefox there's a huge-ass login button at the top of the hamburger menu. I don't sign into anything, let alone my web browser.
How do I disable it and will some distros carry patches to avoid it?
>>
>>109984983
use ESR
>>
>>109984983
The new compact UI mode in the settings makes it small enough that it doesn't bother me anymore.

is xfce still a viable choice?
i want to get the best input latency possible and thats x11 with compositor disabled
>>
>>109985029
if you want a desktop environment then yeah that's as good as it gets imo
>>
>>109985029
XFCE actually still uses the X11 compositor. LXQt substitutes it with a window manager of choice, usually Openbox.
If you're willing to sacrifice a DE, a pure lightweight WM gives the least latency, but it's genuinely negligible compared to LXQt (this DE is just a WM+some daemons), and XFCE still is extremely fast.
