He's supposed to be one of the greatest minds in tech and he makes these arguments without a hint of irony

Linus should have just told them fuck off and be done with the dumb straw man arguments.

No, he is a guy with asperger syndrome who is great at kernel development.

As for AI development, if it is assisted (which I assume is what 99.9% of kernel devs are using it for) then it's no problem, they will verify and modify the code suggestions from the AI.

The elephant in the room when it comes to AI is that all these models are trained at insane amounts of copyrighted code, and there could be a massive lawsuit that would make all AI assisted code illegal.

Very unlikely given the huge amounts of money invested into AI and the political power that brings, and with programming being the main field of progress, but guys like Linus really won't address the licensing / copyright issue at all.

>You just don’t like the arguments because they are simple and effective.
they are not. prior tools were solid abstractions, LLM are a leaky abstraction. when you review code from a person, you do it with the knowledge that the person can train in the last mile and tackle new problems with fidelity. hiding LLM use makes this trust unreliable, slowing PRs and making every review work from the lens of the submitter being a totally braindead retard who would happily clap like a seal and submit a hallucination. LLMs allow the people you would never want on your repo in the first place to flood it with their retardation, drowning out signal with noise. so no, the arguments are not simple and effective. linus torvalds is a fucking retard, he just created linux.
>>
>>110076233
Linus has always been grossly immoral. He claims to only care about efficiency and design quality but these are just rationalizations for his prejudices. People who claim to be apolitical but conveniently go along with any popular trend are spineless.

>>
>>110078048
Agreed. The compiler does not write the code for you, it converts your code into machine code instructions.

But Linus says what his employer, the Linux Foundation wants him to say, same with rust, first he was uninterested, then the foundation told him 'This is the way' and he did a quick 180 and suddenly embraced rust in the kernel.

>Finalnd banned males from participating in the federal government years ago
sounds like a schizo /pol/ theory. Anyway I checked again and he's a politician albeit a small fish and I'm too lazy to do a deeper dive:
>Torvalds was a member of the Communist Party of Finland from 1969 to 1982. He studied economics in Moscow and was the editor of the taistoist magazine Arbetartidningen Enhet. Torvalds has later described his communism as a "rebellion".[3] Between 1995 and 2004 Torvalds worked as a foreign correspondent for the Finnish Broadcasting Company in Moscow and Washington.[4]
>In 2006, Torvalds joined the Swedish People's Party,[4] and the following year he was elected to the post of the third vice chairperson.[6] This upset some party voters due to Torvalds's past.[4] In 2008, he was elected to Helsinki City Council for term 2009–2012.[7]
>Torvalds was a candidate for European Parliament election in 2009 on the Swedish People's Party list. He received 14,044 votes which was insufficient for a seat.[11] However, on 5 July 2012, he was installed in the European Parliament, when Carl Haglund left his seat to join the Katainen Cabinet as Minister of Defence. In the 2014 European Parliament election Torvalds received about 29,000 votes and was elected.[3]
I was probably thinking of Bertrand Russell whose dad was actually the PM of the UK and BR was a total hack.

Which is why the internet, and the things one can easily find on it, have only grown and not shrunk in the last 10 years. Am I right? And all the piracy sites we used as kids are still alive and kicking.

I honestly see AI being more likely to shrink the world than expand it. It's been the trend forever. But hey, maybe we'll get some new toys at least.
>>
>>110076233
Honestly, while I'm not big on how AI is being used in the majority cases, I don't think he's wrong that we shouldn't regulate the tools used in open source. Only the quality of submissions. Naturally, this means submission reviews are still quite necessary, and AI shitters who shovel suboptimal code should be forced out.

Buuuut, this is also the guy who used C as a gatekeeping benchmark back in the day. Granted, I don't blame him! If you can't into C, I don't even trust you with the Rust portion of a codebase. But it is funny how much dude has changed, and people pretend he's the same as always.

Drew Devault (who IS actually a pedophile) made a website listing it and there are a bunch of leftoids who collected everything he ever said, that could be thrown out of context.

If you can't find it, it means it doesn't exist.

>>110076472
He's not saying that.
>>110076233
His argument is it's just a fucking tool and you use it like any other tool.

Why do you have no problem using compilers and text editors and debuggers and static analyzers? They're all just tools.

Sometimes the sophisticated large language tool is the right tool for the job, it can explain complicated code or find bugs and issues. Fact of the matter is the Linux kernel's code quality is improving and getting better thanks to AI.

People were worried about slop making it into the kernel but it turns out human slop has been there for years and this sophisticated machinery can find the blatant bugs nobody else saw for years.
>>
>>110079371
People using compilers and text editors at a level that let them contribute in meaningful way to loonix were filtered enough that there was little in the way of garbage making its way into PRs
now every dick and tom can shit out 5k loc PR that looks good but is in fact garbage. it's clogging up the current system and we have yet to find an alternative
>>
>>110076233
Your position is so ridiculous that it's honestly a valid comparison to make. "Welp, we may well forbid compilers". That's how ridiculous you sound. So you latch onto warping this into "he's saying compilers and AI are the same thing" lol. You can only make up cheap adhoms, lies and misrepresent whatever he said over and over. It's pointless to even try to teach you because you're dishonest. You people have no idea how technology works yet larp on /g/ to say technology is bad. can't make this up.
>>
>>110079356
>there MUST be more to it
Are you in delusion now, because you realized that you believed a lie?
There really isn't more to it than that.
Every single legislation on the world has..
>age of legal responsibility (imagine allowing a 17yo to murder people and not going to jail for it)
>age of being allowed to sign a subscription contract
>age of being allowed to drink
and so on...
But pointing the fact out, that there isn't some magic fixed 18yo threshold, not even in any law, made all the ACTUAL PEDOPHILES like Drew Devault jump on it.
If you read such a comment, and the first thing you think about is to stick your cock into a 5yo boys anus... guess whos the pedophile here?
>>
>>110079384
Yes, that's a problem, but the status quo of so called extremely talented programmers writing shit and insecure code was a problem too.

Personally, I think you're a giant dick if you're clogging up reviewers time like that with code that you don't really understand.
People have no business letting their autonomous agents go off on their own like that.

These models are useful but they should be used by the project maintainers and developers. Not some tard trying to sell a product that wants to prove how great it is by getting fixes into the Linux kernel.
>>
>>110079384
>it's clogging up the current system and we have yet to find an alternative
it's a DDoS attack.
And every serious souvereign project treats it as that.
The Linux Foundation is a subject of the US government and Linus personally got reeducated by it. So they will stick to SI (formerly known as AI) as long and hard as possible.

They will eventually reach a point where slop gets rejected outright with no review... like so many other projects do... or they will die.
>this DDoS attack is actually amazing!
isnt a sustainable opinion, no matter how much you got paid of to hold it.
