You can assume that almost all proprietary information can be reverse engineered or recreated by frontier models, so all the value now goes to those who actually build things, i.e. China. It's over for America.

Chinese can't build a luthier quality guitar. Or even quality factory guitar like Martin. Or a nice pair of boots. Or a Randall knife. Or maybe even something you're potentially building yourself. You know, things with SOVL and culture and heart. If you think the world moves on without stuff like this, you're truly lost.

this will just push more companies into subscriptions and cloud hosting because its a lot harder to reverse engineer something when you dont even have an obfuscated binary to play around with
this is the end of desktop software and proprietary hardware gadgets outside shit like industrial control systems as we know it

ai will cause communism. ultimately, capitalism as a system is necessary because of limited labour supply, and if labour is worthless, there's no political justification for private ownership.

a thing doesn't need to be infinite to be worthless. supply vs demand isn't a simple coefficient - at certain level of oversupply, hoarding and guarding the resource becomes detrimental to total value.

if ai can provide infinite intellectual labour, it doesn't make sense to guard intellectual labour - you either go opensource and farm aura from the fact you did something(like linus farms aura from linux, despite linux being free), or you just don't bother with value calculations and do the thing for your own enjoyment.

I'm having more fun with software than ever, any issue I have with some half baked program that is missing one or two critical features I jwant I now have claude add the feature or just have claude rewrite the entire thing from scratch the way I want. Chinese guitars are good enough. Why would I spend $3,000 for 100% quality when I can spend $300 for 85%?
>>
>>110089595
If you're buying a guitar you're probably sinking thousands of hours on it. Spending 3k to not fight the instrument seems like an excellent deal
For things where quality doesn't truly matter, sure, but a guitar is a terrible example.

While partially true chinks just refuse to have sane manufacturing practices. If you have them manufacture a mid-to-high range product and underspecify the tiniest thing they WILL use the absolute cheapest garbage you can find in all of China to save two cents per finished product, which can ruin the actual product in practice.

I could talk to this person (if OP wants to share where it was posted), their concerns make perfect sense to me. I was looking at committing to doing something similar to this person last year (I have years of pro audio experience, know the relevant DSP software and hardware etc., and was looking at building he company in Asia to be close to industrial suppliers in Shanghai).
I pulled the plug on the idea for a few reasons, but the biggest ones being that the market is saturated and the moats were already shrinking before AI. A LOT of great sounding audio effects are just transfer functions running on an incoming stream, and even advanced algorithms like reverb are actually...kinda simple. The 'sauce' is not technological, it's basically tweaking the coefficients and having good taste that can help you identify what sound will be broadly popular.
In the pre-digital days, it was kinda the same. There is an 'American' mixer sound, a 'British' mixer sound, a 'Japanese' one and so on - the sound being a combination of where the EQ turnovers are situated, and some variation in how the mixer distorts when overdriven. The national defaults are to some extent a reflection of linguistic preferences, with different countries emphasizing different frequency ranges in spoken language. Then the popularity of different countries and brands is a reflection of shifting musical taste, eg I could point to former-East Germany techno artists who like Mackie gear because they liked the sound of Detroit techno and because Mackie gear was relatively cheap due to low prestige etc. etc.
Anyway my point is that it's 50% algorithmic technology and 50% taste, with more and more shifting toward taste over time because processing cycles have been less and less important as technology advanced. Back in the 1970s you could only do a very limited number of operations per sample so algorithmic genius counted for far more.

I have no idea what make they are, one has nylon stings, two have metal strings, I replaced the windey nut thing on one by unscrewinging it and bringing it to a music store and asking for a replacement. I play for about 5 hoursa wekk and have done for 30 years. I can't read music, don't want to learn how to have no idea what music notes are and on the last rare occasion I was accidentally heard playing by someone and they came in the room I was told I was playing some classical piece by a spanish dude called rodrego and asked if I was a professional musician and bothered me so much about getting it recorded I cut them out of my life. I just make up my own music and replay it and replay it and alter it until it is perfect and add new bits when something happens like a pet dying or a loved one or something amazing happens and have done for decades. I don't want anyone to hear me play, it's for me and me alone. I have no fucking idea what you are shitting on about . I'm a musician types are always utter cunts. There will always be room for good taste, and it's unsavory cousin, marketing. But if I was in hardware right now, I would be planning to leave my processors etc open and concentrate on hardware quality. The money from now on (assuming you don't already have a world class brand) will be in good hardware engineering that lasts and feels great. Balanced XLR as well as TRS, external metal washers on your jacks, encoders with heavy resistance or more beautiful LED collars or pre-filtering your LEDs so they oscillate beautifully rather than flickering, high quality finishes that don't chemically degrade (Hi Waldorf), colorways that that are beautifully balanced and so on.
IT's up to you what you put inside; it doesn't make much different whether its' a $150 Raspberry Pi (the InMusic approach) or a $1.50 JieAi (M-VAVE), people are going to hack it and then look for ways to firmwaremaxx. If you try to lock your shit down you are asserting that there is something superior, timeless, and inimitable about your audio algorithms, and the grim realities descrbed in OP are a) there probably isn't and b) people will jailbreak your shit, make it run Doom, and then do what they want with it.
So put as much juice inside as you can, leave it unlocked or even tell people where the endpoints are, don't lie to them about what your gear can do (Elektron is learning this lesson the hard way now after deceiving its customers for years). Pour you work into the user interface, both the digital one (which people will revere and adapt if it's really good) and the physical one, which is where you get people emotionally because a well-made machine is enjoyable to physically touch and play. If it physically feels good, people will pay. If it looks good as well, they'll pay bank.
You can't be the next Moog, Oberheim, Smith, etc. but you can capitalize on the fact that most pro audio gear is not beautiful. If you want to make money, your role model should be Luigi Colani.

While it's true that most components for everything are manufactured in China, Chinese vs western company quality standards do tend to differ greatly. That's where the difference comes in that I've noticed. Hardware that would be bottom binned by western countries gets sent out as normal by Chinese.

Exactly this. AI makes human intelligence completely irrelevant. It's already causing certified geniuses in fields like math and science mental breakdowns because AI invents solutions they could never fathom in a million years. It will very quickly meet and surpass everyone who ever lived, combined. On a bright note, that means leftists were right and communism will win.
>>
>>110090136
Outside of soulfulnes, Chinese are about cranking out shit at mach speed and in huge volume. For a guitar, wood needs a lot of seasoning. The top makers keep stockpiles they've been aging for years. That's definitely not part of the Chinese model.
That matters for any kind of acoustic instrument. With electrics, not so much. But even then, Chinese cut corners on some drying processes that matter. Roasted necks are a popular option in the electric world, but it's best done on seasoned woods too. Chinese make roasted necks with whatever they get their hands on.
>>
>>110090177
>because AI invents solutions they could never fathom in a million years
That’s not really true. It finds solutions where few new insights are actually provided, so it effectively solves something while sucking all the fun out of it. It automates all the things that are fun and intellectually stimulating.

Because 99% of the time it makes no difference and customers don't notice if they couldn't be assed to specify it.
I buy from chinese suppliers all the time, for multiple companies, and mostly the problem is engineers not thinking about what they actually need.
Today the problem is less scamming and more hunting the best margin to the customers specification. And it works, which is why they now make everything.

Yeah obviously. The question was how much of your brand guitar or boots are made already in china, not if thats a good thing.
But the reason why they made that deal is because the customer already favored the cheap shit at the bottom of the product line and it ate its way up to the high value because at no stage did the consumer start giving a shit.
Here we are. And OP is right to be worried, because the IP locks was the only thing anyone outside china still had, now they have all the manufacturing and can easily replicate all the know-how too.

There will be better stuff, but its going to take someone with some drive and some capital. If you clock in to some excel job everyday you are absolutely fucked in this new world. If you can take some risks and are creative, you may just have a path forward. Slop will be mildly rewarded. Probably will see artisan markets as well start to strengthen. I already told him his shit will be stolen. The retard was trying to launch a finished product on amazon with all the bells and whistles. He has been trying to "perfect" the product. Convinced him that he just needs really good marketing and to launch on a crowdfunding platform and milk as much money as possible before its copied by the chinese. The retard was trying to launch some time late next year and hes at 90% and just trying to polish more and more. I wouldn't be surprised if he spends the next 3 months building out a crowdfunding campaign, launches, and halfway through the campaign some chinese company just spits out some AI slop and canibalizes the rest of his campaign. Bleak

this retard has been living under a rock lmao
nobody's shilling anything, they're already pushing mass surveillance with digital IDs, AI cameras watching and building sophisticated profiles on you, autonomous drones doing the same thing, and stealth speech recognition on fucking TVs like the telescreens in 1984
none of this is theoretical, it's already being normalized

And yet here you are doing jack shit about it.

no idea why people here are freaking out when it's what they've advocated for in these last 4 years. you get what you fucking deserve.

Or you could use open source software that actually works.

>last 4 years
Since people embraced steam over physical vidya or services like gog and accepted drm e-books, I knew they desire slavery and there is nothing that can keep them from it.

Sure, buddy. I'll do that and if they doesn't work I'll organize and get everyone else to join me because everyone will care about the same problems and then we will usher in a communist utopia.
