Even before they self-destructed they were stomped on and humiliated for multiple lifetimes, and before that they were ruled by a largely foreign culture for centuries. If you want to claim 5000 "unadulterated" years of history because you're farming on the exact same spot as someone who lived there before you then the Iraqis still win the oldest civilization award anyway.
