I've been researching Mycenaean mythology in some sources. Obviously, most of the gods they worshipped had counterparts in later periods, but there are so few sources about these gods. I haven't been able to find many academic articles, but there are some obscure gods that disappeared in later periods. I noticed that there are anonymous people here versed in these matters using a methodology more based on etymology; they can speak up if they want. Anything new is interesting to my research. Are there good, reliable sources on Mycenaean mythology, more specifically on its gods? Something I found quite strange on the internet is people claiming that the Mycenaean Poseidon was a "deity of the underworld." The conclusions are quite weak in my view, like his name, "Earth Shaker."
>>18309889I find it interesting how "Ares" is a name from the Archaic period the Mycenaeans had a different epithet for it, derived from Anatolia.
>>18309889It bothers me how many idiots simply assume that god X or Y didn't exist simply because they don't seem to exist in the Mycenaean sources and writings we have. But the absence of evidence doesn't necessarily mean that the absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence. They say Hades didn't exist at that time.
>>18309914We know practically nothing about Mycenaean mythologyanything that sounds even slightly different must automatically be considered some pre-IE, Minoan or any other possible external explanation. Honestly, we should be more open-mindedTake the case of 'Xanax', Beekes dogmatized that it is definitively non-EI.But i don't think so
>>18309889>Mycenaean mythologyYou should read more about Mycenaean literary sources. It's not like there are extensive stories written in Mycenaean. The vast majority of the time Linear B writings are referenced simply to show a word existed in Mycenaean times and what the word looked like at that stage of Greek. Most of what is known about Greek mythology comes much later when people were highly literate and writing in alphabetic Greek. Mycenaean writings are generally used to show that the name of a god existed back then.
