It's visually and tonally unique still even if some shows and films have tried to ape its schtick. You rarely see anime reaching for something like Lain did nowadays, never mind back in the 90's, and even more rare is something pulling it off. Why try to be thoughtful and delicate when you can make shows about people fighting or cute girls, or cute girls fighting?
