Pretty certain this one has been AI/digitally upscaled. However, the quality is unusual so I'm posting it with this warning, despite the fact that upscales piss me the fuck off.
>>4805049I'm reasonably certain this one is not an upscale. The pixelation/artifacts visible in the sky background I believe are lossy JPEG artifacts and otherwise the result of whatever scanning process was employed.

>>4823424One of my relatives was an officer onboard an LST like this. He said they would sometimes transport torpedoes which had a very pure type of alcohol inside their guidance systems. They had a problem with sailors breaking into the torpedoes to steal the booze out of them for drinking purposes. Even in the middle of a war, you can't keep a dedicated alcoholic away from what matters most.
>>4805049Don't be so sure it was up-scaled. The Speed Graphic used 120 or 220 roll film and could shoot up to 1/1000th of a second exposures. Been reading Otto Carius' memoir about his time as a tank ace and the information about the Tigers is fascinating. They were pretty well loved by the tankers compared to all of the previous tanks as the crews were well protected even from T34s and the aiming system was top notch. There is a lot of discourse today about how overengineered and unreliable they were but according to Carius their reliability was not a big issue in combat. The biggest weak points they had was that shrapnel could get into the cooling vents and puncture the radiator and that the batteries were so overworked that they may not start a stalled engine (23L gasoline V12) if they were not fully charged up. The only ways to start it if the batteries were out was to get out and hand crank the engine (not something you wanted to do in combat) or have another tank give you a push. Tanks worked in teams and could usually give a push or a tow even in bad situations. They were strictly forbidden to allow the Tigers to be captured intact and had explosive charges mounted inside to destroy a disabled tank, which the author replaced with bottles of schnapps. Pictured are early Tigers. They had cupolas that stood out on top of the tank with hatches that opened upwards, later improved models had lower cupolas with sideways opening hatches./autism
>>4840038thanks for your autism. here another Tiger story:The Tiger tank of Vimoutiers"On August 21, 1944, the Falaise pocket was closed at Montormel, a promontory overlooking Trun. Thus ends the encirclement of the German army, putting an end to the Battle of Normandy.Part of the German troops escaped the pressure of the Allies and retreated towards the Seine. Many German troops are immobilized in the plain of Caen. A few armored units from outside will attempt unsuccessfully to open a breach in the encirclement. The 12th Panzers Division participated in this counterattack. One of his tanks, a Tiger I, broke down just outside Vimoutiers on the road to Gacé. Its crew scuttled it to render it unusable. Pushed back by Allied bulldozers into the ditch to clear the road, the Tiger was abandoned for around thirty years. Its cannon, which points through the thickets, signals its presence until that day in 1973 when the road was blocked. Scrap dealers who became owners of the tank proceeded to dismantle it. The turret is already lying on the road. This work was interrupted the same day by a veteran of the 2nd arm. Div. (French) residing in the area.Purchased by the city in 1975, the tank was classified as a Historic Monument on December 2 of the same year, underwent a summary restoration and is located in its current configuration, on the Gacé coast, near a picnic area. The Tiger I of Vimoutiers is one of the last two examples listed in France and one of six known worldwide. Its rarity, its history, its power, its innovative design give it a place as a renowned historical and technical witness throughout the world."

This is a picture of my grandad (right) with I believe his co pilot in front of his B-17. Leo Francis Duggan was his name. I've attempted to find out information on his bomber by using the numbers, but never could come up with anything. The last time I spoke with him was in 2014, we had a lengthy conversation about his time in the USAAF but his recollection of details were non existent due to dementia. He passed in 2015 at the age of 92. He retired from the USAF as a Lt. Colonel. If anyone could find out more about his bomb group or anything for that matter I'd greatly appreciate it.
