251016 #KimLip - "Can You Entertain?" to be released today (6PM KST)Press release excerpts>- "Can You Entertain?" showcases Kim Lip's vocal skills blossoming atop a hybrid R&B track. >- The single kicks off ODD EYE CIRCLE's 3-week single project, with songs coming from Jinsoul and Choerry as well.>- The project forms one connected story that then expands into the world of ARTMS.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lu83X8TQcJg(Excerpts) drawandrew interview w/ Jaden Jeong following the release of his book>Interviewer: Having read your book, it seems that of all your groups, you're particularly fond of LOONA.>Jeong: It was the first project in which I worked on everything from A-Z. I put it all on the line to make it happen. If that didn't work out, I doubt I'd be here today.>Trying something yet unseen not just in kpop but anywhere - revealing the 12 members one at a time, not just with face reveals or profiles, but album, MV, storytelling, all connected... Even if I were to go back to that time, I wonder if I'd be able to make that happen again. I didn't sleep much back then I was so obsessed with it.[Interviewer recalling much greater success abroad than domestically]>Jeong: The project was with a new company, and I wasn't known as much either, so we were really starting from scratch>I thought a lot about how we could win in this David vs Goliath situation compared to the other companies, and for me the key idea was lore/worldbuilding. You know in LOONA's official album descriptions, that's the term seen the most often (세계관)>When people asked "What is LOONA?" we wanted to cement the idea that LOONA was about lore/worldbuilding. And there was indeed a lot of that put into it. >I think of it this way, if we have the Three Kingdoms culture in the East, the West in turn has fantasy culture. To aim for a global audience I thought we needed to present a world that was well crafted, like a good fantasy novel. There weren't any instances of this connected with both the music and the group. I wanted to try for the first time to link one album to the next, where listening through the albums is like reading a fantasy novel.>So with LOONA's album packaging too, if you line them up it's like a manga series. I didn't adjust the specs. People who collected them probably know the satisfaction of collecting those, the feeling of that being worth it.
[On not reaching domestic mass appeal?]>Not to give excuses but I thought that if we could make strides abroad, that popularity could flow back to the domestic audience. So I do view that not working out as unfortunate.>Interviewer: You must've found the company's financials to be regrettable>Jeong: Rather than money, as I was working obsessedly, having become immersed in it, I was fired for going too deep into this world of mine. But I said [to management] that we actually had to go further. Unfortunately things ended up like as they did [him and the company due to difference in direction].[On Modhaus]>Interviewer: Then you said okay, I'll do it myself then, and now we have Modhaus. You have tripleS - and ARTMS, actually composed of LOONA members - that story's also linked to before, then?>Jeong: Yes.>I think having strong storytelling and concepts are parts of what makes our company competitive. Amidst all these other, successful, companies, we're relatively new. So if we're sharp, globally competitive, and offering something fun, as these stories become connected the fans can get more immersed. I thought we needed things like that.
>Interviewer: You've tried a lot of new things (like Cosmo, Objekts). What's the reason for that?>Jeong: As the kpop industry's grown, an issue at the forefront has been paying the artists. Hugely successful idols earned very much, more than their peers could. But outside of a small number of artists, the fact is that many artists haven't really been getting paid. What I wanted to change most when starting Modhaus was how settlements worked. What would be fair? Could it apply to the next generation as well? So we arrived at Objekts (digital photocards). Upon one being sold, the artist gets paid directly, irrespective of how much their expenses were, or any prior investments made. As someone working in kpop I'm proud of Modhaus being first to implement things like this. For kpop to go on healthily for longer, aspects that we missed along the way - and I'm missing things right now, so I'm sorry to say, but I think the industry needs to make attempts at improving on these aspects.
