I'm a /beg/ who's just been doing fundamental grinding (Dynamic Sketching 1, some Vilppu, accuracy training) but I'm getting a little bored. What are some "easier" things to practice? Making a head might be fun, would be worth going into Loomis Head book at my level?
>>7686472heads, mouths, muscles, arms, legs, draw whatever you want. Heads/upperbody is a great starting point.
>>7686363If you watch enough anime AI should be detectable as AI immediately. It's less beg in drawing but more beg in aesthetics. Same goes for detecting faux anime. It should happen in less than a ~second of glancing at the thumbnail in most cases. Watching cartoons only increases this disability as I've noticed. If you've watched a cartoon made in recent years you need heavy detox.
I noticed that when I try to draw anime faces I tend to put the nose and mouth too high
i feel like i just don't get construction, i just can't see the forms that make up the body.

anyone got a reup on the mangamaterials collection? preferably in english
Been posting in the beg thread but now that I'm trying to do studies for the first time, I figured I should post here. I just started drawing last week so please excuse weird shit. Critique welcome!
i dont know how to colour so heres an unfinished horse
>>7687876that's a good start for week of drawing, to preface im not good either but i have struggled a lot with heads when i started as well and improved. for now, keep drawing things you like until it becomes a habit. Then, after you know the basic rules, you have two options: the first improves at a reasonable pace while still being fun, which is breaking down anime heads and practicing constructions. The second is faster but more prone to burnout, which is studying the skull and real heads (I'm currently doing that). last thing, another pitfall i fell for was rushing my drawings, take at least 30 min on each head and critique it afterwards. take my advice w a grain of salt and good luck!

I redrew this art from the anime Platinum End. Left is the reference I used and right is what I drew. What do you think?
Here is something random. Tried doing the shading bits but made him look like he had stubble, so I erased it. Any advice, on that specifically or anything?>>7688659Thanks anon>constructionsCan you explain a bit what this means? I'm still new and not sure what you're referring to specifically>study skullI actually did this one time in a previous drawing and was told that irl human skulls don't really translate the same way to manga heads, so I didn't try it again. Should I just do it anyways? Is it generally something good to learn?>30 minsAw shit I was trying to do them faster and faster whoops lol, but ty anon, I took my time with picrel today, and I know it's not just a head nor human, but still, I think you're right in that it turned out better.>your picrellooks amazing! How long did they take you, the Ichigo one in particular? And how long have you been drawing?
>>7688988Lmao, felt really good about this as I was drawing it, then I put it side by side with the ref and I can see I compressed Ichigo into a strange goblin. What happened here? Is it just lack of practice? How did I lose the "sense of scale" or whatever the correct term is so badly??
>>7688988>Is it generally something good to learn? To learn how it works yes, to cope-draw skulls thinking it will make you better at anime no. Same with boxes or any other copes people invent to not draw anime.
>>7689015are you on a timer?
>>7689015>Is it just lack of practice?yeah that's normal anon. also try to find the highest resolution drawings to copy from and do multiple copies of the same thing, can be in the same session or on a different day.>>7689022this anon is right, take more time. just looked at the first serious copy i did and it took me around 30 hours with full color, but i didn't even notice the time because i enjoyed the process.
>>7689018I see, okay. I'll give it a shot again just to experience it some more, but I am mainly interested in drawing in manga style for now.>>7689027>Lack of practiceOkay, sounds good>Multiple copiesYou're right, this seems super important for consistency, I don't think I can produce two drawings that are clearly the same character>>7689022>>7689027Yes and no. I am timing myself just to get an idea for how long it takes, but it's not like I have a bomb strapped to my chest. That said, I have a pretty limited time daily to work on this stuff, and I end up wanting to do a bunch of different drawings.>30 hoursMy god, what did you copy? Can you post it? Maybe a 2 page spread? I can't imagine that I'd still find it fun dropping so much time into a single drawing, but maybe I just gotta try it.
>>7689042>Can you post it? jannies might be gang stalking here so i don't wanna post it. it was a simple composition with 1girl drawn by the character designer of the anime the girl was frompoint is, there's so so much happening in even simple looking drawings by a master. it's overwhelming for a beginner to get it really accurate in all details .since you like bleach you could take your favorite panels or illustrations and recreate them along with these copies of faces/standing poses. not everything needs to be a super long copy. you can spread out the complex copies over days and switch it up when you get tired, overall you're going to get much faster with time.>I can't imagine that I'd still find it fun dropping so much time into a single drawingthe number is just for comparison of what can happen, to not be discouraged if it feels long. it's fine to take long since you're gaining experience. it's gonna train your eye to not gloss over details or symbol draw.
>>7689027I'm going to give the opposite of this Anon's advice and say draw faster. Draw the pose as fast as you humanly can. Don't time it because "as fast as you humanly can" varies wildly from person to person and from pose to pose. Do it 20 times in a row until you get one that looks kind of okay. Then add the details onto your personal best. You can do these in tiny thumbnail form if you want to speed up the process even more, then when you feel you have an understanding of what makes the pose work, draw it full-size.
>>7688988no problem!>constructionsits pretty much breaking down the object you're drawing into simple 3d shapes, a common way to approach the head is a sphere for the cranium with the sides chopped of and some sort of trapezoid shape for the jaw but there are other ways too, you can explore them on pinterest and experiment until you find one that's intuitive for you.>irl human skulls don't really translate the same way to manga headsI've heard that too lurking here, they dont directly translate but they are still the derivative, its much harder to make sense of the simplification you see in anime unless you have a good understanding of where it came from, at least thats how it worked for me. otherwise you'll be copying lines without knowing why the artist used that specific line or why the nose is placed there etc, you can still be successful without it, just takes a little longer for our brains to connect the dots trying to understand the abstract rules of each artist more than with skulls, it just might be boring at first.>it turned out betterawesome! glad it turned out well!>my picrelthank you! it took around 35 min, then i spent another 10 min adjusting the eye area, i skipped a lot of the construction steps for it since this was a front view angle, but you can search 'anime head construction' on pinterest to see what i mean>how long have you been drawingI started last march so about 1.5 years of semi consistent drawing, one of my first drawings were picrel, i have a binder full of these so know improvement is possible!
>>7689313yeah I agree. also you can do hide channel like mannequin traces over it and copy those. if you do various kinds of copies to train all skills like gesture/composition/style it's going to be the best>"as fast as you humanly can" varies wildly from person to person and from pose to poseprobably better to say that you get into the rhythm of copying it so you can get muscle memory and comfort.
Been drawing since 4 years, and I just swallowed my pride and decided to do Krenz exercise (shape accuracy), and noticed my angles are always off by like 10 degrees, worst case was like 20 degrees, and it is been very diffecult, I'm still not sure if I'm cheating way too much on this exercise or not. one thing for sure, it made me more humble, I'm stuck at the "/int/" stage where I'm kinda good and people on twitter like my art, but I feel like a hack and don't know how to draw and I was feeling like I'm stagnating, so I just draw until something looks good. Decided to go the absolute basics, shape accuracy, and this fucked me way too much. guess going to the basics won't hurt. so I'm gonna do a couple of these a day until I acheive 90% angle accuracy
>>7689473This is my first time doing this, so I accept it if it is fucked way too much

I'm VERY happy with the results, especially compared to >>7689015 gremlin Ichigo here. I tried something new, kinda measuring out the whole body before even starting, and I think that was a good idea; felt like I was making the legs too long at first for example, but then they turned out a good length, I think.>>7689327Okay anon thank you, I will look into construction more, especially with my picrel when I try to draw her from the side and from the back>>7689334>hide channel like mannequin tracesSorry anon, can you expand on this? You've already put quite a bit of work into the image though - it's not easily fixable at this stage - so I would start over with a loose and energetic sketch. Today's copy. Pretty happy with this one: can't point to anything immediately wrong with it the way I could yesterday with >>7690289 having a head the size of her torso. Also somehow took me less time to draw despite not making an effort to go any faster or rush. Any advice is welcome.
>>7691582Overall I don't really recommend copying settei, the poses tend to be stiff among other issues. Their point is design reference, after all. Chad's anatomy here is all sorts of fucked. You need to be mindful of what you are trying to learn when copying, and I don't think there are many good lessons to be learned here, all you will be getting is some mileage.
>>7691613What in particular about the anatomy is fucked? The anatomy looks fine to me, as does the drawing itself. There’s a lot to learn from it, such as how to draw shoes, proper thigh shapes, proportions, and even how to simplify. It’s a well made drawing and I completely see why that anon would want to study it
>>7686350How'd I do?
>>7691620>proportionsHe is like 30 heads tall and his body is a rectangle.>proper thigh shapesThere are close to no interesting shapes here. There aren't any folds on the clothes, the drawing is very flat.>how to simplifyThere is a case to be made for this but that's better learned elsewhere. If he likes Kubo, he should copy from the manga itself and apply construction techniques while doing so, so he can slowly learn how to recreate the poses/style while also developing a workflow.
>>7691613>anatomy fuckedI see. I'm not really at a level to recognize fucked anatomy I guess; how can you tell it's fucked up?>mindful of what you're trying to learnGood point, I don't actually know the answer to this, I just know that I was told to copy stuff from anime/manga I like daily until I could do it accurately enough, then start drawing from imagination. What about some of the action poses in the settei? There are quite a few, I had just been doing the easier ones first to get comfortable with it.>>7691620Yeah, I'm not sure what's inherently bad either, but like I said I'm still very new. I'm happy overall with how it came out, but I can see I fucked up the shapes of the arms and legs, so I thought it was a good learning experience. The lips were also way harder than I thought they'd be; took a lot of redoing to not make it look like a racist caricature.
>>7691630Follow up on >>7691629One of the most essential techniques to learn when drawing is how to "see the 3d space on a page". For that you will need to learn perspective and construction, those go hand in hand together. While it is fine and encouraged to start with simpler poses and angles, if you're not mindful of the fundies and exercising those brain muscles constantly you are sort of wasting your time with simpler copies. One popular resource is drawabox, something you can do alongside these copies. >What about some of the action poses in the settei? That would be better since it might also help you with gesture. Overall settei is very hit or miss because, again, they are normally simple ref sheets, nothing else. They don't really have developed elements you can draw from.
>>7691629>30 heads tallHe’s only about an extra head taller on the torso. Generally, it’s 4 heads from the head to the pelvis, including the head. The legs are long for stylized purposes, but that isn’t necessarily inaccurate as long legs are much more realistic than short and stubby ones. >there are close to no interesting shapes hereCompletely subjective>there aren’t any folds in the clothes, the drawing is very flatAll design choices. Given that the pose is stiff, like you said, a lot of clothing folds, or any, are not necessary to communicate the drawing. It’s still clear that he is wearing a shirt and that’s all the artist wants you to see. I also disagree on it being flat. There’s perspective on the shoe, clear overlap on the arm, and the thigh looks rotated. The forms are there but not emphasized because the contour itself already tells what it needs to.
Comic progress.>>7691621Not bad. Its a bit rough and looks like I'm having double vision but you've got the energy and resembelance.>>7691582You can still copy kubo if you want, lord knows I copied vasto lorde panels when I was 15, but I'd reccomend doing your fundamentals and copying a reference from real life in addition to that. I know its not fun but you will learn how things are supposed to look and you will learn how to simplify them in a style like kubo. >>7689473You're never going to be 100% accurate but it never hurts to go back to basics. No matter what level you're at. Just remember to flip the canvas every now and then.
>>7691639Perspective and construction are essential techniques to learn, but one should not approach drawing in such a formulaic way. Studying drawings such as that one help in other ways that perspective and construction may not. It’s important to have variety when you study and vary your approaches and techniques
>>7691645I agree, but anon mentioned he himself doesn't know what he is doing, just mindlessly copying. That's why I'm suggesting he start with fundies while also doing that.
>>7691621Crude
>>7691648Ah that makes sense. I think at the end of the day, it’s just good that he’s drawing
>>7691639>>7691642>>7691648Okay, what's a good regimen to follow for fundamentals? I honestly don't even know what that really means in terms of applicable action, so I don't know what to DO even if I want to do fundamentals. I will do some of that, and then some of what I find interesting like that other anon is saying, since even if anatomy is weird, it could all just be by design>>7691645>>7691641
>>7691656https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKiopm83L8cThis is what I use. Don't overdo like a schizo. I still reccomend you to draw what you like but fundamentals will teach you how to draw forms accuratley and will help you be more comfortable. Again, I also reccomend to just draw something from life or use a reference of a real person.
>>7691656Honestly? Study perspective made easy, loomis, and draw from life .
>>7691656The ratio is up to you, different things work for different people. It depends on how much of a studybot you are and your goals, so you must find your own work balance. As I mentioned, do drawabox. You don't have to do all of it, but I'd recommend at least finishing Lesson 2, as everything you will learn there is a must going forward. Consider everything you learn there as expanding your tool belt, be mindful of it all and make sure to bring and apply the knowledge to your copies. Here is a wip of mine from imagination so you know I'm not bullshitting you. I'm nothing special because I don't draw or study much anymore but progress was quick and steady when I did.
>>7691659>>7691661Okay anons, I will attempt this and post... here? At that point it wouldn't be anime study, I suppose. I guess I'll go back to posting in the beg thread until I attempt another anime study.>>7691666>picrelOh shit anon, that looks great, I'm pretty jelly. How long has this taken you?>depending on your goalsI'm writing a story/have a good chunk of it done, but I want to to make it into a manga/comic. My goal is to at least be able to put the words into panels; at worst, enough so that a much better artist can understand what I'm going for and take care of the art, and at best so I can do all the art myself. Thanks for the suggestions tho, I will apply them to the best of my abilities.
>>7691687What kind of comic are you making anon? You sound a bit like me as I'm making a comic too. What is it about?
>>7691124That's fantastic for just 3 years. Keep it up Anon!
>>7691690Modern fantasy setting where people can gain power from historical myths, and it is a streamlined process, regulated and catalogued by a world organization. Story follows a boy who has one of these connections, called a Divine Concordance, but is the only one in history to seemingly not have it match anything on record. That's a very rough synopsis; I have a lot of it already done in prose, but I feel like making it into a manga/comic would add to it immensely. Some scenes just work better visually than in writing, but I just can't produce that kind of art yet.>Also making a comicWhat about yours, what's it about? Are you >>7691666? Because if so, you already have a leg up on me lol
>>7691687>that looks greatThank you.>How long has this taken you?Probably about 20-30 minutes as I tried a variety of hairstyles, not sure because I don't time my stuff. Speed comes naturally with time and practice, so don't worry about it, it is a bit of a dumb metric.By comic you mean manga? Already having a clear goal is a good start. Copy your favorite comics or mangaka, once you have fundies you can start studing their panels and page composition as well. The things you need to study vary a lot depending on what you mean to accomplish as an artist, and so does your training regime.

>>7691613>Overall I don't really recommend copying settei, the poses tend to be stiff among other issues.has never copied anime settei award
I'm having a lot of trouble picking 1 or 2 artists that I'd like to copy a lot of. It seems that very few have a huge body of work with characters from many angles.
>>7692384>It seems that very few have a huge body of work with characters from many angles. You don't need that from a single guy. You want to copy them for stylistic and workflow reasons. Stuff like perspective and angles come from dedicated studies on the topic, where you implement what you learned from the copying alongside everything else. Unless it's a mangaka where the goal is studying panel composition, for example.
>>7692406I thought it would help with consistency if I stuck to 1 or 2, but I'll take your word for it.

In 2D illustration you don't have to worry so much about every strand making sense but grouping them into "chunks" helps make it feel believably have volume, fall on the head and face AKA not flat.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hUTp9Giyowhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y56mI1IEN3I
>>7702441>>7702644You can try and break it down like this.

>>7695919For me, it’s Krita. The best image editing program. I even ask for extra brushes and the community is so friendly and more than willing to oblige. One time I asked for extra plugins and they gave me three. I said, “Wow, three for free!” and the nice friendly lab tech laughed and said, “I’m going to call you 3-for-free!”.Now other artists greet me with “hey it’s 3-for-free!” and ALWAYS give me three plugins or brushes. It’s such a fun and cool atmosphere at my local art online community, I go there at least 3 times a week for art tips and a large download of ink brushes, 1-2 times in the mornings on the weekend, and maybe once in the evening when I’m in a rush but want a great experimental brush that is affordable, fast, and can match my daily rendering needs.I even draw my fries in Krita image editing software, it’s kino! What a great program.

I found whats wrong with my drawing... what happens then?I feel like I'm not actually learning anything.>oh, I should've done that instead>that should go lower>that should be larger, and less slantedthen what?
>>7707905apply those fixes to your drawing. the practical part is the most important part in learning to draw.the theory and logic about drawing is important too. think about why those fixes help. say you made the eyes too close together, spreading them apart helped. why? balance, facial harmony. why are the eyes big in the first place? makes them look cuter. think about bigger concepts as they apply to all the fundamentals of drawing.keep the fixes in mind for your next drawing so you don't repeat the same mistakes.
>>7707926Seems straightforward enough, I'll keep at it then.
sometime on twitter, I see random absolute beginning artist get hired (probably free/peanut labor) to do animation for Japanese studio. Where do these people even get recuitment from??? it puzzles me.
>>7684653After some thinking, I came into the conclusion that people who "draw in anime style" can be generally divided into two camps, illustrators and animators. Illustrators tend to put more focus in the details, while animators' focus are the shapes/silhouettes. Naoki Saito is an example of an illustrator-minded artist, and hide channel & Anime Shijuku (Anime Private School) are animators by trade. I'm not saying that animators can't draw good detailed illustrations because there are some great animators/illustrators like Tatsuyuki Tanaka, Yoneyama Mai, and tarou2. Hiro Kanzaki of Oreimo/Eromanga Sensei is also originally an animator, but he switched career and now an illustrator. So yeah, I think learning from animators is the best path (for me). I hope I can make it in two or three years. >>7708157They get recruited by Seisaku Shinkou/Production Advancement 制作進行 on twitter (it's basically Miyamori's role in Shirobako, go watch it if you want to know what they do). Seisaku is kind of like an editor in manga industry, seisaku's job is contacting animators, offer them to draw some cuts for a certain episode, receive the cuts from the animators, send them to the episode director and animation director for check, and send the cuts back to the animators if the episode director demands a retake. Different episodes have different seisaku so you might only get offered to do this one episode because some seisaku know you through twitter, or you might get a contract to join the project for the whole season by the デスク (desk/chief seisaku). The numbers of animators in the industry are not enough to meet the demand, that's why they have started recruiting foreigners and beginners who never went through the traditional career path (専門学校/vocational school -> in-between -> key animation).
>>7708227The neat part is if these seisaku are animation fans, so they often follow some like-minded animation otaku. For example the Animation Producer for Sono Bisque Doll (who his career as seisaku at dogakobo) follows me on twitter although I'm absolutely a beg.So if you want get your works known, be active on twitter especially the animation community by following a bunch of animators (Japanese and foreigners), anime directors and seisaku (they often put 制作進行 in their bios). Make friends with some foreign animators who have made it in the industry. Some animators like @LissBevs even translated anime guide resources that they share for free.
>>7708227>So yeah, I think learning from animators is the best path (for me)Yeah in the end it depends on what you want to do with art.I'd say even for those who want to be illustrators studying anime character designers' work (i.e. settei) is a great boost to experience. Illustrators can be really hard to decipher while in anime director corrections or settei the shapes are in their "pure" and most clear to understand form.
This might not be a good thread for this, but I felt like people here might have more knowledge.https://x.com/Yosaku_xDoes this account smell of AI to anyone? It seems like he sells physical copies of stuff, so surely someone would’ve called him out if it was generated, but it just smells off to me
>>7708229A animation producer follows me, but he's only twice as popular as i am, makes me question if his shows are even popular in the first place.
>>7708415Yes
>>7708415what makes you think it's ai?
>>7708415It's real. It seems to have some weird filter though
>>7708747Probably a combination of things. There were points where it seemed like his output was high considering the quality. A few of the characters don’t seem to have the exact correct outfit, much comes off as intentionally so, a couple didn’t. And the fact the accounts he’s made are all relatively new, I think. Obviously plenty of people could probably pump out his quality of work, but I suppose it’s just a bit hard to not be suspicious. I’d mostly decided he was legit, but thought 2nd opinions would be helpful.
>>7708415I don't believe it's AI.>Consistent art styleColoring and faces and body types and the way he draws hands are consistent throughout all his works>Eyes aren't oddly drawn AI tend to make pupils and irises different or a bit jank. They can be slightly different colors and the pupils can look like weird blobs. His eyes are crisp and the shinies make sense>Hair maintains thickness and reappears from behind the characterAI will make hair disappear or blend/curl back into itself. His doesn't.>Details like emblems make senseAI is very bad at doing small details. The emblems drawn on his artworks for armor or belts or something look perfect. This goes for swords as well, AI is very bad at making the hilt/handle of the sword symmetrical, but his are fine. This guy is more consistent than I'll ever be. What's sadly likely is that his art was stolen and used to train AI models. Remember that accusing real artists of AI shouldn't be done lightly and that you should have a smoking gun or a ton of evidence before doing so. It's super damaging to people's reputation and the more people that get accused of AI, the less people will be ready to actually witch hunt those who use it.
>>7708872It's AI retard, look at the bodies.
>>7708892It's not AI, retard, nothing about the bodies screams AI
>>7708415Doesn't look like AI, also it says in his bio he sells the actual physical works so why would it be AI?
>>7709542>>7708872>>7708770Its 100% traced ai
First time attempt at studying a manga panel, I added the socks and feet to it to try change it a little bit and especially since it was a cropped panel, i've never drawn socks in my life but I think they look convincing, you guys might be on to something though because I've always just drawn but never 'studied' before and just thinking about how it was drawn opens my mind to different techniques
My first drawing, a copy.I'm worried becouse it took me between 3 to 4 hours to do it.I thought It would be faster
The model
>draw animu>looks westoid>copy setteis 1:1 nonstop >acquire asian genes/can draw animusI never thought it would that easy lol
bros, how the FUCK do nips draw hair!? even copying I can't get it to look half as good
>>7710910post your copies and work.
>>7710892You will naturally improve in speed over time as you get more familiar with drawing, so don't ever worry about how long it takes. The only thing to remember is not obsess over redoing a single thing for hours in a single drawing because that will actually take up all your time

This is my sketch that Im most proud of to date copied from a pixiv book, been struggling lately because while I feel like I learned a bunch I still struggle immensely without reference. Plus I barely have the motivation to draw lately which sucks cuz it was all I wanted to do until recently.
