Saw this dude doing daily studies and posting them, looked like a solid idea so I’m shamelessly stealing it. Gonna force myself to draw every day because my “progress” has been flatlining harder than my will to live.
Plan is: 20 one-minute gesture studies, slap a face on each one so I don’t get dead fish faces, then pick one sketch and actually finish it.

If you’ve got any critique or ideas for extra stuff I could add, just say it.

I'm going to start writing down what I actually think is wrong or good about my drawings. Until now, I've mostly used building blocks to construct my figures, but I’ve decided to shift toward gesture drawing and focus more on expressions. I want my art to feel more dynamic and less stiff.

>>
>>7719070
The pose in the top-left lacks dynamism — maybe pushing the back further could help add more energy. The bottom-left pose has an awkward-looking right arm; I’m not sure how to fix it without rotating the torso. The other poses look okay overall, but still feel off.
>>
>>7719074
I'm not sure why, but the standing pose with open legs looks off — it just feels awkward. The sniper pose isn't working either, but I’m not sure yet how to improve it. Maybe I’ll figure it out if the site gives me a similar pose again.
>>
>>7719075
I think every pose here turned out well, except for the one with the open legs standing straight that one still feels off

Do me a favor and pick any anatomy/ gesture book and copy the pages from there.

Hampton, Morpho who ever, because you're not really doing anything with the gesture drawings. You're not learning, you're not applying anything. This will amount to a waste of time, trust me I did the same thing for a while.

I found a free PDF of Hampton's book and read through a few pages. So far, it seems like he's saying similar things to what I've heard from YouTubers using S shapes, C curves, and straight lines for gesture drawing. I’ll keep reading, though maybe I’ll find something more useful further along. Thanks for the suggestion, and in the meantime, I’ll keep drawing.

I think it’s important to just put things out there, even if they're not perfect. yeah duh. And ignore the crabs, they hate to see someone doing what they can’t. However you should post all this on DAD or your blog instead of just dumping it here.
Drawing daily is only difficult for the first week or two. Eventually it will just become part of your daily routine and it will feel harder NOT to draw
>>

Yeah, I get that I’m just trying to get into the habit and remind myself to keep at it. Thanks for the tip about ignoring the crabs, that actually helps. I found a job recently, so I’m always tired and my routine’s all over the place, but I’m trying to stick with it. I might post some stuff on my blog eventually.

Daily Drawing Log

Alright, if anyone Is reading. Time for today’s art ramble.

So, I’ve decided to start leaving comments on my daily sketches, like someone suggested in this thread. Today’s batch… eh, not my best work. Could be because I messed with my tablet’s pressure settings, could be because I phoned it in. The randomizer also threw me some tough poses, but honestly, that’s not the point. The real problem is that they still look stiff and flat instead of having that 3D feel I’m aiming for. Haven’t cracked the code on how to fix that yet—if anyone’s got tips, I’m all ears.

On top of that, I promised myself a routine: 20 poses, 20 faces, and one full body a day, with the plan of gradually finishing the full body in detail. Lately, though, I’ve only been keeping up with the poses. No excuses—it’s just plain laziness. The last full-body sketch I tried? Deleted, because I hated it. I’ve been dodging the “finishing” part of drawing, and I want to break that by pushing through and completing even the ugly ones. Maybe they’ll surprise me.

Anyway, that’s today’s entry. Hopefully future-me can look back on this and laugh at how far I’ve come.

Daily Drawing Log

Today’s sketches feel a little better, but they’re still flat and kind of weird. I really need to lean more into C and S curves—pretty sure the poses will look way better if I do. The character sketch itself turned out decent, but the background is a total flop. Probably because I was thinking about the character first and didn’t have anything specific in mind for the setting.

On a side note, I went to my local market today and saw people eating, and it hit me—I’ve literally never drawn anyone eating. So, if I remember, tomorrow’s goal is to try a sketch of that. I also still owe myself the 20 faces I didn’t manage today, so maybe I’ll tackle those too.

If anyone’s actually reading these rambles, thanks for sticking around.

>>

The wording a bit awkward and the grammar mistakes probably.

- First word "did" should be capitalized - though sentence would sound more natural if you omitted the word. If you removed it, the reader would imply that "did" should be there.
- "blow off" -> "blow"
- Second bubble - needs a period after "cage key". It would probably sound better as "cage's key"
- Remove "forgive me" - sounds off in this context. Maybe add it to the next sentence to be something like "I'll give you a kiss for forgiveness...<3". An alternate sentence would be "I'll give you a kiss to make up for it"

Keep at it - ESL's fuckin hard

Yeah… I kinda skipped writing these for a while. Feels like I’ve been slacking, but in my defense, I had a lot on my plate. Anyway, back to the art.

The poses today actually came out pretty good, I think. What I especially like is how the character sketch turned out. I drew him super fast, so he’s really rough and sketchy—but I actually love that look. The midriff and pecs didn’t come out great, especially compared to that skin-tight suit guy I did earlier, but with clothes it’s always trickier anyway, so I’m not too mad about it.

That’s it for today. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll actually remember to write another one.

Not gonna lie, today’s drawing sucked. Everything felt super rushed because I started watching High School DxD for the first time and, well… there went my time. I still knocked out the 20 poses in the usual way, but the character sketch was done in like 20 minutes or less. No surprise it’s really rough. That said, I do think the face turned out kinda cute, so at least there’s that.

As for High School DxD—yeah, it’s actually really fun. But Issei just isn’t cute enough for me. Something about his look makes me feel like I’m watching a creep. The ecchi is solid though, no complaints there. Still, I can’t help but think a twink/femboy protagonist would’ve made the whole thing way better.

That’s all for today.

You kinda draw monstrously long legs sometimes. Like, this drawing looks good >>7742705 because while the legs are also cartoonishly long, there's still a sense of balance, the legs look well drawn, she's at least wearing heels and all that and the angle is slightly lower than her waist so you can pretend that it's because of the perspective, but this one... >>7744230 ...I know that there are artists who draw legs even longer, but this still feels like it's pushing it. Legs are usually like half the body height or slightly shorter, in anime artists often make them slightly longer. But she's like all leg...
If you really want that much leg, maybe you should put a bit more effort into them, like, drawing the anatomy outline first and then drawing clothes on top, because the shoes there look a bit odd where they're attached to her trousers... It's cool here >>7742705 and here >>7740653 though.
I admire your dedication to the craft though, your characters are also really cute, great stuff
>>
>>7744258

>>
>>7744259
I never learned proportions; I just go with whatever comes out naturally. But you're right, the legs on today's character turned out too long. I worked really quickly on this one and didn’t put much thought into it. I didn’t even sketch the pose beforehand—I just started with a rough sketch and then erased the construction lines later. Also, thanks for saying my drawings are cute, I appreciate that!

Today I only managed to draw one character. I was up until like 3 a.m. yesterday, so after work I was wiped. Came home, crashed, and only squeezed in this sketch. The legs really suck, but the rest is pretty decent—especially the face. I actually love how that part came out.

I’m way too tired right now, so I’m heading back to sleep. Tomorrow I’ll try to make up for it by doing 40 poses.

Daily Drawing Log

Knocked out 40 poses today, but honestly, I’m starting to hate them. They all look the same and kinda shitty to me. I’m thinking maybe it’s time to cut down on the poses and focus more on complete sketches instead. At this point, most of my drawings only take 10–30 minutes, with a bunch of breaks in between. What I’d really like is to actually put effort into a single drawing, spend days on it, and see how far I can push it. But yeah… that might just be wishful thinking from a lazy guy.

On top of that, I caught the flu, so I feel like garbage—but at least I’m not dying of the heat of summer anymore, so I’ll take it as a win. Also realized this marks my first full month of posting these logs, so congrats to me, I guess. Tomorrow I’ll celebrate with a pizza.

Thanks to everyone reading and watching along. Hopefully I can start doing this kind of thing on Twitter/X too. For now—good night.

Daily Drawing Log

Lately I’ve been thinking that just doing sketches and poses isn’t really helping me improve anymore. It’s good practice, sure, but I feel like I’m stuck in the same loop—nothing’s really evolving. I want to start doing full, complete drawings instead.

I want to try rendering, add details, and actually spend real time on a piece—like multiple hours or even days if needed. I think that’s the kind of effort that’ll really push me forward, even if it’s harder and slower. Just quick sketches won’t cut it forever.

That’s where my head’s at today. Hopefully I can turn that motivation into actual progress soon.

Your lines are scratchy af. Try slowing down and thinking before you throw a line down. Visualise what you want to draw and then put down a confident line. Good job though anon you're doing well. I think it helps with gesture to watch other people doing it. If you can find some videos on YouTube of people doing quicksketch and talking through their thought process that might be useful. Pretty sure Jeff Watts has some good ones that you can draw along with.

Daily Drawing Log

Today I finally got to the shading and coloring stage… and honestly, it sucks. I don’t know what I’m doing anymore—it feels like I completely forgot how to shade properly. Everything looks off, and the colors just don’t blend the way I want them to.

I really want to do better, but I need to relearn how to approach this whole process again. It’s a bit frustrating, but I guess that’s part of improving. Hopefully tomorrow I can start figuring it out piece by piece.
>>
when you do the gesture are you doing the line of action first? I feel like it helps a lot. Thanks for posting anon, I dig the thread never stop :)

Looks pretty cool anon. The blade looks kinda off but I find flat planed objects in perspective hard too

I've completed the background and finished this piece, but I'll work on the rest tomorrow.

Daily Drawing Log

The rendering actually came out not that bad today! The hair still looks a bit strange, though—I’ll try to fix that tomorrow and maybe add a simple background too.

After I finish this piece, I’m planning to go back to my usual routine: 20 poses a day and one full drawing. But this time, I also want to include rendering practice, since it’s one of the skills I really want to get better at.

>>7752799
Perspective is still giving me a hard time, so I’ll need to find more poses that utilize strong perspective and work on those as well. Slowly but surely, I’ll get there.

>>7752730
I use the action line, but I forget sometimes while drawing. Thanks so much for the kind words! I'm glad you're enjoying the thread!

Daily(not realy daily) Drawing Log

Sorry for missing a few days—think it’s been about two or three since my last post. Doing poses has been tiring me out lately, and honestly, I’m starting to prefer sketching characters instead. I’m not sure if I’ll keep doing pose studies for a while or just focus on drawing characters in cool poses that come to mind.

In the thread, I finally posted a complete drawing, which is a win in itself. But it also made me realize that my weakest areas are still color, shading, and backgrounds. They really drag everything down—but even so, I’m happy I actually finished the piece.

Today, I wanted to draw a non-sexualized character, more in line with my older stuff. Back then, I was trying to build a really unique style—I used to give characters long noses and dress them in tuxedos or elegant outfits. For today’s sketch, I went with a femboy fishing, kind of a meme idea. Hopefully it turns out decent, though I doubt it. It’ll probably end up as a grayscale piece anyway.

On the bright side, I’ve started noticing more flaws in my drawings. It’s demoralizing, but also kind of good. Usually when this happens, I get a sudden skill boost not long after—or at least, that’s how it felt the other times. So I’m hoping that happens again soon.

P.S. I started watching the new Kamen Rider series. If anyone else here’s a fan—you probably know what I mean when I say the suit sucks. I hate it. And apparently, I don’t know anyone else who actually watches Kamen Rider, so I’m just ranting into the void here.
>>
I actually quite like your drawings. Seeing you post so much also made me get up and draw

Holy crap anon, stop with the quick gestures. You had realized it wasn't helping you improve for a minute, but now you're back to it. It's not supposed to take this long before you notice any progress. Drawing is as much about *observation* as it is about mechanical input, and I'm not getting the sense in any of these that you're observing how the body looks.
I'm being serious here - this is a road to stagnation. Don't compulsively draw just to meet a quota. It can actually be better to take a break for a couple days if your heart and mind isn't in it. Because right now, you're only spinning your wheels in the mud right.
Try some deeper anatomy studies if you don't feel comfortable doing imaginative work right now. Anything other than the repeating the same failing thing over and over again.

I actually don’t enjoy doing gesture and push exercises. I thought they would help me improve, but honestly, I have a lot more fun working on stuff like this >>7758177 instead. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion I think today I’ll just focus on drawing some characters in poses I enjoy.

well frankly, you are beyond improvement because you approach learning like a gymbro approaches a muscle, which is an incorrect approach in this context.

Also unrelated notee, but I hate femboys or whatever else that vexing and unsightly publicly degenerate appearance you're trying to portray is.
The whole "I'm cutesy and feminine but actually a massive sodomite" thing is most bruxing and unsightly.

Daily Drawing Log

Today I tried spending more time on the line art, and I think it came out decent. I also experimented with grayscale—and that part sucked. Coloring from grayscale in Krita feels weird; I can’t seem to get the right colors to achieve the effect I want. I already struggle with color, but this was honestly kind of sad.

Tomorrow I’ll probably try drawing something that isn’t just a standing pose for a change. I know I’m a slow learner, but someone told me I’ve developed “line confidence,” which actually made me really happy to hear. Even though I still prefer messy, sketchy lines.

right now my main goal is to get better at coloring and rendering.

If anyone has tips for working with grayscale in Krita, I’m all ears—YouTube tutorials on it are hard for me to follow.

first off, you lump, that's John Wright Barker who painted it. He specialised in realism which means he painted everyday scenes, but he also dabbled in mythology, hence the Circe painting.
My art is mediocre in comparison, but I'm at least getting somewhere.

Now, to the advice; find yourself a nice acacia or aspen wood stick. Sharpen it into a stake and put it upright in the earth. Aim your center of mass directly above the point. Thereafter, sit down rapidly, for best result.

Thanks for the advice, anon. I'm sure my art will improve DRAMMATICALLY after this

Daily Drawing Log

Tried coloring again today, and it actually came out pretty decent this time. I still used the grayscale-to-color method, but it worked better than before finally starting to get a feel for it.

The second drawing I did, the one of the catgirl, turned out good overall, but the legs look weird especially around the knees and socks. I originally planned to give her jeans but changed my mind halfway through, and it kind of shows. The result ended up a bit messy.

It’s also not as expressive as I hoped, so maybe I’ll tweak it later to bring out a bit more personality. Still, progress is progress, and I’m happy it’s looking better than the last few.

man I don't want to burst your bubble but I don't see much change. Maybe do longer studies? Downloading a coourse from the general helped me get out of permabeg. I think having someone like that to explain things to you nice and easy or receiving a class from an actual art teacher would help you a lot.
>>
>>7766686
I know it’s not a huge leap yet I’m still grinding away. I’ll try adding some longer studies and maybe find a good course to follow if is free. Appreciate the honesty!

glad to hear that. It's a bit inspiring to see you dedicate yourself to this and the fact you're doing it for so long is much more than I can say for myself.

Bro, it's only been one month this is just the beginning. Anyway, do you know any legit free courses I can follow?
>>
>>7766753
try the video course general, really, the torrent is full of good stuff and the rest has to be decrypted. But I'm currently following nekojira's course and boy is it good, at the start it taught me a lot of really obvious stuff I was annoyed at for having to re-learn but it got me observing stuff properly instead of blindly drawing boxes and circles, then it gets better, it teaches you a good method for drawing heads at any angle and proportions to make child/teenager/adult characters and supposedly at the end it teaches you color theory and stuff. It comes with the psd and brushes too, so I don't have to scramble for similar brushes. So far this is the only one I've had enough attention span to look at but I'll tell you if there's something else worthwile in the future
>>
>>7766685
I was trying to decide which pose to use for my character. Honestly, I started drawing yesterday, but doing the same standing pose every day just feels boring, and it’s not really worth posting.

I searched online for drawing courses, but I really don’t want to download anything. So, I’ll probably just stick to online tutorials and study from YouTube instead.

"Daily" :( Drawing Log

The poses today actually came out pretty good, but the final sketch just sucks. The leg looks weird again, and I’m really starting to notice how bad I am with shoulder attachments—they always end up looking like they’re stuck to a flat surface instead of actually connecting to a body.

I also tried some realistic shading today on an older drawing after watching a YouTube tutorial. The result was… uncanny. Not terrible, but definitely off. Still, I guess that’s part of experimenting—trying stuff that doesn’t quite work until it finally does.

That’s all for today. Even if it’s frustrating, at least I’m starting to see what’s wrong. That’s something, right?
