I've realized my lack of financial success in art is caused by me not appealing to any specific group, I just paint shit. Should I continue this path of general development that makes me make literally 0 dollars or should I narrow it down and appeal to a specific group of people to get some money, but limiting my growth to some extent as a result?
>>7723798are you not a fan of any popular media?
>>7723798find a vidya game you like and draw that stuff!I am a stupid romantic shipper so all I make is couples from a game and I love the interactions
>>7723878What if I'm not?
>>7723798I will try to give you proper feedback in the most sincere way I can since I feel like I might be in the same spot you are. I believe when you are trying to achieve the art skill you want this is probably the best way to achieve it before you decide to make something commercial to entertain or satisfy the need an audience might have. I don't see anythign wrong with doing this, actually I believe most aspiring artists should do it or else we would just end up filling our social media accounts with things we wouldn't really be proud of. but bare in mind, if you really want to sell and make money out of your art you will eventually have to come out and make something average people like and not just a display of artistic skill only art nerds like us can appreciate, I would suggest staying in this development state for a while if you aren't satisfied with what you make, but put down a date in which you might like to start appealing and talking to an audience with your art.
>>7723798There's art for you and art for the people. If you'd like to be selfish with your art then go ahead just don't expect people to want to pay for that. If you want money you have to explore markets and who your ideal audience would be and make art for them. If you don't want to make something of popular media perhaps some nostalgic media and find circles where you can share the art. Freaks like us who enjoy art for art sake are far and few between compared with the nerd who has a tech job willing to burn his money on things he loves.
>>7724162>and not just a display of artistic skill only art nerds like us can appreciateI'm definitely in this position where other artist generally like my work but it has no value to the average 'consumer', and so I'm getting nothing out ot if money-wise. I'm also broke because I decided to pursue art as my career, so that's what's nagging me too. It's like, being in this study limbo has no end in sight, that's how it feels.
>>7723798I'm kind of in the same boat, i already have the skills, but i just don't know what type of content i should create. Though, i'm leaning towards NSFW, honestly...I think i'm a pretty boring person myself, so i think if i were to pick something to create content of, it wouldn't be something that i ''love''.But i'm okay with that cuz' i could really use some extra money, it feels a bit shameful, but yeah...I do have interests and things that i love, but i don't think they'd monetize well. IDK, i'm just lost.
I draw my fetish and people into the fetish follow, support and comm me. It's that easy.
>>7724312Huh... Imma try that.
>>7723798>should I narrow it down and appeal to a specific group of people to get some moneyIt's about how much your tastes overlap with other people tastes, like if you're a fujoshi and you post yaoi/BL on webtoons or tapas (like picrel) then you're gonna make bank if you open up a patreon, otherwise you sell out like most furry artists that don't care about furry art but do it for money.
>>7724881>webtoonIt's all about target demographic, even Stan Lee flopped on webtoons back in the 2010s because of his webtoon about a hacker superhero, weird shit that appeal to a very niche demo.
>>7724885>even Stan Lee flopped on webtoons back in the 2010s>webtoon about a hacker superhero, weird shit that appeal to a very niche demo. You would think that the name Stan Lee on the year he died + peak MCU mania because of Infinity War & Endgame would make that webtoon a hit, but the number of views was lower than self published indietoons by literal whos.I rest my case, good luck OP.
>>7724158are you a fan of any niche media? if you have your fundamentals solid then you should probably specialize your work anways, so might as well try to get involved with a group that appreciates the same things as you.
>>7723798Keep developing your art while experimenting and thinking about what makes your art yours and not just study #15739
>>7724271>pursue art as my careerLock down exactly what that means and focus on it. Selling painted canvas originals? Painting ads for fashion brands? Making comics/graphic novels? Selling prints on shirts/jackets? I reckon your work would suit any of the above, but diversify and find something that sticks. Other job hunting advice applies like making portfolios specific to the work you're applying for.Sticking random works up online and waiting for commissions is a trap, it's gotta be targeted to a degree.
just do this one weird trick
>>7723798Get a job in marketing. It's harrowing but it's easy work, short hours and pays well. I keep art on the side to keep myself sane.
>>7725591are you ok anon
>>7723798Make whatever you want and slap group niche labels on it after. There are literally tags like “purplecore” or “pastel aesthetic” or “neutral core” that you can slap on anything.
>>7725814>There are literally tags like “purplecore”I don't want to live in a world where purplecore is a thing
>>7723798As someone whose main source of income is art commissions, I seriously recommend making some fanart on your social media of choice to gain an audience before trying to actually make any money. Fanart is the real audience-builder, but people will gain an interest for your original creations too after a while. People came to my account for the fanart and stayed for my ocs and adopts.Making money with art is definitely possible! It just requires some effort to build the right community that’s willing to spend money for your style.
