Yeah, as I thought. You made the top of the hat way too flat when it should be curved upwards when seen from below. Th other problem is that the hat is usually drawn with the center of the cap visor lining up with the direction and centerline of her face, but in yours it's going off a bit in a different direction.

I decided to lean into my flat "rule of cool" drawing style and try making medieval illumination style pictures of key moments in my tabletop rpgs. I tried to find nice skin colors. After painting a little sketch i decided to compare it to some old masters that i love.I literally color picked from the photo. And the colors on on the photo looked so much colder and grayer. I would not pick most of this colors to paint a body.But now im not sure. In comics people can tell when people traced because it looks uncanny and dogshit, but even good artists who would occasionally trace would fundamentally change the drawing from the source material to make it appealing and readable as an illustration. For painting color picking is an even bigger give away as the more realistically you paint something, the much more obvious it becomes that you don't know how to paint, especially if it's textured. Due to how color picking works on digital, you will actually end up with a muddier colors overall than if you had actually manually checked and adjusted each area of color yourself, especially if the photo or reference has heavy noise or texture.

It seems like you understand the benefits of copying from art you like, but have already assumed you'll fail, so might as well aim for failure. I don't think that's a good way to look at things. If you're not copying it 1:1 for the purposes of learning, then what's the point of drawing the same character, in the same pose, but with an intentionally worse art style? Again, why not just draw a new picture at that point? Sorry if it sounds like I'm tearing into you, it just doesn't make sense to me.

When it comes to the loomis method/breaking away from the generic "idealized" head. For some reason changing up features/head shapes isn't clicking for me. If that makes any sense, wtf can I practice to break out of the simplified/generic head shape? I know to mess around with feature proportions and all that but something just isn't clicking for me.

Really struggling with eyes, particularly the right one in 3/4 view, which you’d think would be easier than the left one. Im trying to draw them in relation to a face but I’m having trouble understanding the concept of the eye as a 3 dimensional form. Like I can draw what I see but I’m struggling to understand WHY the eye takes that shape. I have even more trouble fitting them into an actual face, and I feel like to make progress I need to be drawing full faces just for the eyes to make sense. Anyone have any tips to mastering this?
