does anyone else think that ghibli movies in general kindof suck? the art and atmosphere is insanelly good but the stories are filled with pointless characters and scenes that do nothing it the grand scheme of things
>>7762013the mainmovie i have a problem with is Kiki. you have a bunch of characters that dont need to exist(the witch at the begining with the cat, painter lady , mean girl that hates her grandma, even the boy "love interest" is mostly pointless) also there is very little in terms of delivery being a big part of the story, and the ending is just some random asspull of she needs to save the boy from dying in a blimp accident
>>7762013>le depressed man... >makes le movie...>le cute girl...>*dargs cigarette*>"its deep">from a studio raped by disney>its japslop: the movie>*flying dragon, flying airplane, flying girl*>its the same thing you watched before, but now>"i started smoking when i was 13">"i dont even inhale">in american theaters for the fifth time this year>the seats will smell afterward>japslop: the movie
>>7762019similar issues with from up on poppy hill(most of the mc's family is pointless, there is a painter woman again that has no good part in the story)for ~20 min of the runtime you are left thinking that the mc's relationship could have been incestious (why was that a plot point) and the main interesting part, the clubhouse, was underutilised
>>7762013a lot of people think that, they're called americans.
ghibli movies are only good if you wanna bang basic girls scrolling thru pinterests
>guys, isn't le popular thing actually shit?>Please give me validation for my super unpopular opinion!!When did this place turn to reddit?
I don't even think about those movies, I just watch, clap and forget about the movies. it's that simple.
>>7762013Some kind of suck. but they all have beautiful art that kind of carry them for me, I never get bored. even earthsea, can't get over those backdrops of the city. >>7762027disliked this one. agreed about the clubhouse(again background opulence)
>>>/a/
>>7762032Make suggestions for movies and shows.
>>7762058*
>>7762058i agree with you the art carries the movies, but personally even the art couldnt keep me entertained when watching earthsea, the movie should have been atleast 2 parts(feels like most ghibli movies should be 2 parts ), it had too much to say and not enough runtime(even though i think its one of the longer movies)i feel like from up on poppy hill would have lend itself better to an anime format a lot better (12-24 20 min episodes)
>>7762013as I get older I care less about the plot and more about the art and animationso no
>>7762019watch kiki again when you grow up.
>>7762013Watch Miyazaki's Lupin the III - Castle of Cagliostro. It's like Ghibli but with pulpy James Bond sensibilities, no hippie shit.
>>7762013>does anyone else think that the thing is a thing and is not this other thing that I think it should be?you have opened our eyes, anon
I like Ghibli but I'm not blind to valid criticism. It seems, however, that your argument is>not every single character / scene serves to advance the plotMate, are you actually retarded? Not everything in a movie needs to have a deeper meaning. Some characters and scenes exist only to enrich the world and make it feel more alive. It's even Miyazakis stated goal to break away from the norm and focus more on the mundane and the beautiful.
>>7762269thank you for an actual post engaging with what im saying. its not lost on me that the characters are there to make it more immersive, however the problem is that many unimportant characters get screen time that doesnt add anything(or just gives you more questions) to the storyfor example in kiki the mean girl who hates her grandma could have easily been a one of character and yet she reapears as the boys friend it feels like she was supposed to be a bigger role but they couldnt fit it in the story, same goes for the artist in the woods, her only goal is to cheer her up and give confidence back to kiki, and yet that job could have easily been done by the baker woman or man(this would also establish that they grew together) instead of making a character that takes screen time away. in fact there was so little actual interaction with the baker couple that it surprised me. i feel that these issues came up because miyazakis chaotic storyboarding, for example in a documentary about the boy and the heron(i havent watcherd it might be good), he supposedly just added a random character during the storybording stage, witch in my mind could easily lead to meandering stories with no greater thing holding them together
>>7762286I get that certain elements could be changed to make the plot more streamlined. Problem is that the movies aren't exactly plot-focused to begin with. That's fine. There are people who enjoy movies without plots. Think of Once upon a time in Hollywood or Dazed and Confused. I guess it just comes down to personal preference. Personally, I'm more into plot-heavy stories but occasionally a hangout movie can be nice too.I also heard about Miyazakis haphazard storyboarding. He really fucked up with Howl's Moving Castle. That movie makes zero sense.
>>7762293my problem isnt exactly that it isnt streamlined(i also like stories like pulp fiction, shit just happening),its that more interesting elements and story developments are pushed aside because there are too many things happening and the interesting ones dont get the attention that they shouldfor example from up on poppy hill, the incest plotline streches through the entire story(by developing the backstory of the fathers serving in the military) and takes up considerable time and confuses the audience for ~ 20 min before it is resolved(its a stupid turkish melodrama-esqe plotline that doesnt belong).the most interesting part of the movie was the clubhouse and how it brought the students together to keep something that they all held special. and again because of the story being all over the place the clubhouse was imo not fully utilisedyes exactly i didnt metntion howl's because it was so vague and all over the place that i barely remember what the plot was .just bits and pieces, not enough to actually engage in critique, the most i remember was how jarring it was that the mc girl legit just helped the witch and talked to her like a buddy even though she turned her into a hag
>>7762013but does it have to be hyperdistilled and optimized? everything on screen has to have same weight at all times? does it not kinda break pacing?
>>7762013Suck is a bit strong but they're pretty well overhyped>>7762140>no hippie shit.>toned down Lupin so he's not an unrepentant pervert/amoral thiefMystery of Mamo is the better film btw
>>7762026KekI really loved the first one I saw. They got boring later. It gets pretty derivative after a while.
>>7762307howl's's one of the best ghiblis.
>>7766587s howl porco spriteda mononoke kaguya ponyo kikib the restnot sure about pompolo yet
>>7766595>>7766587assuming you aren't trolling, please explain. The movie is absolutely nonsensical. It's just a sequence of random incoherent events.I had no fun watching it.
Ghibli movies overall are very good. They can filter people like OP though because the stories don't follow a standard plot setup.
I was really disappointed watching the boy and the heron in theatres. A bunch of the animations were nice, but things like the budgies seemed very lazy. The scene in the swamp with the spirits was very cool though.
>>7762013that's why i like them actually. their plots are unconventional and natural-feeling to me, while still being very well made, impressive movies. in so many other movies, i can detect the beats before they come. even if i don't know what will happen next, i can sense the shape of the story before long and then i find it boring. i like that ghibli stuff feels a bit rougher, less edited down and polished in the plot. it's hard to explain but they just feel more "real" or immersive to me in that way. feels more individual as well, like there is some real authorship to it.i actually remember making this observation about ghibli movies after watching porco rosso and feeling that was one of my favorite aspects. to me they are really atmosphere and art movies.i think spirited away is by far my favorite ghibli.
>>7766635the boy and the heroin was also diappointing to me. it felt just too repetitive for a ghibli movie, on it's own it a good movie but the story seems too familiar with other stories. the art and animation is phenomenal obviously. Maybe its also myself expecting a new and original story.
>>7762013It's more a problem with non-Western story structures. In Asia, storytelling is based around 4 or 5 acts so by the time you reach the first climax, you're thinking the movie is about to end but you're only halfway through. There's a lot of filler that could be removed to make the movies better
>>7766891watching it a second time knowing the grand unc was meant to represent Takahata(miyazaki's mentor) made it land better
For me, it's Only Yesterday.
>>7767059That's my favorite movie of all time, but no one else likes it.
>>7766802>feels more individual as well, like there is some real authorship to it.I agree. That's also what I love about his work. Also, your post reminded me of this little excerpt from an interview with Moebius and Miyazaki where Moebius basically says the same thing.>Moebius - For example when I saw Princess Mononoke, and even more Spirited Away, I was struck by the fact that I couldn't imagine a producer, any producer in the world, accepting the script.>Miyazaki - My producer does not oppose to what I propose. He merely asks me to respect the time schedule.>Moebius - Oh, right. But, had he worked for Disney, he would have never managed to do that, not even NausicaƤ.>Miyazaki - I can't do a film after having debated it. I am unable to do a film while discussing it with my team. I issue directives. I do not achieve it otherwise.>Moebius - But I think that this self-confidence is what nourishes Mr. Miyazaki's work, and makes it so unique, in cinema.
>>7762013compressing the story as much as possible so everything adds to the story is a hollywood shit about money efficiency and making it simple enough for brainlets
Ghibli movies are incomprehensible for chronically online people. Short form content fried brains can't appreciate them. Touching grass is a must. They're not meant to feed you every little bit of information. Miyazaki worked on vibes and the idea that kids have enough imagination to not need everything chewed up for them. For a long time I didn't like Ponyo very much, then I had chubby little kids running around. Now they're not chubby and little anymore and I get it.
>>7767119Need old form communities or adaptions of old form communities and inherent obviousness of why 'touching grass' is better than scrolling. It needs to be as strong as the motivation to bandage a damaged limb. It also needs to have positive comparision. If you told me scrolling on websites is less fun than making a musical, i would believe you but would i instinctual believe you? But lets say i get to be involved in a musical, and afterward i scroll on websites and not think scrolling is boring but think that musicsl production was fun, i wanna do it again, then i might prepare to think of a future where i hang around interests of musical production. Scrolling comes from depression because youre guaranteed to see a influence thats more enjoyable but you dont want to go for it. It is like questioning. People gotta know theyre enough idk
>>7767084>>Miyazaki - My producer does not oppose to what I propose. He merely asks me to respect the time schedule. This is really funny when you know that Takahata was apparently really bad about this.
