>>7765430So the plate is just what I call the composite. When you merge the line art and colour layers (both multiply and colour mode versions). My background is trad so it's a term I grabbed from printmaking, meaning a negative image you stamp onto a surface at the start of the process. It's the bottom of the stack effectively.It might sound a bit disconnected, but it makes sense in my head. See pic related, might help explain it better. It's an old unfinished piece I did for a board request of someone's OC, but the unfinished state lets me show you the layer stack thing. You can see the colour backup serves as a kind of masking option, so if you just want to work on flesh tones for example, you can wand tool grab them and then paint on your work layer. The plate is where the majority of the work is. If you do an overlay layer or need to duplicate something or add a pattern on top, it goes on a layer above and then is merged down onto the plate. I always flatten my images and try to work on one layer as much as I can. The sfx layer and special layers like the tail I keep separate so I can make multiple versions of the same piece. The sfx might not even change that much, maybe even just some sweat drops, but it's a good way of working economically if you want to make a series. Hope this helps.

I had a fren long ago that told me everything we need for painting is to read Alla Prima 1 and 2 and to go through Bargue, everything else more or less falls into place with the technique and mentality built from these. I still wonder about that at times.

The accuracy and edge control you get from Bargue can't be understated, it really carries over into essentially every study from life you do from there on out and save you the frustration of not having technique. And with Alla Prima it's more about the mindset of painting itself, not about the technique. Richard Schmidt (may God have him) was a very interesting person as well as an accomplished painter, and in the personal department I do believe that his books have a good deal to offer.Of course, if you want to do game illustration you won't be needing the subject matters of Bargue, but the technique built will help you a lot. You'll need a lot of dynamic sketching to materialize objects into the scene, and a solid knowledge of constructive anatomy for odd-ball characters, but being able to render those and the precision/brush economy you get from Bargue can't be understated.
