I want to learn how to draw faces better and more aesthetically but I don't want to blatantly copy some artist's way of drawing faces. I also feel like anime style faces are the most aesthetic, but they feel very limited on showing resemblance as the style tends to hide or completely replace many facial features.

when I try to do something animesque, I avoid copying any manga artists because I feel like the way they draw faces is like their own signature.

when I try to draw a more western style, good looking females end up with the exact same facial features and any deviations of it make them look ugly (small nose, big eyes, big forehead, full lips).

so I feel in a labyrinth and I have no idea where to go, so I have been stuck in this for a couple of years.

pic kinda illustrates part of the issue. I can compile a couple of faces I drew later.

copy so you can learn what you like no other way look at jojo for example

Is this a Gabe thread?
Why the fuck would you use an AI image?

Anime is a flexible style. As an example, see this. I particularly like how this Japanese artist draws faces.

Oops, I forgot to include my justification. You say this about anime styles:
>...they feel very limited on showing resemblance as the style tends to hide or completely replace many facial features
There's a difference between "tends to" and "has to." It's true that the anime style, being optimized for animation, seeks to minimize detail. However, there are different types and degrees of stylization. It's possible to draw an anime face that doesn't sacrifice important facial features.

Copy from many artists, and retain the bits you like from each, eventually they'll coalesce into your own style

unfortunately it's not AI, that's how shartdoesfarts draws

>Japanese artist
mgong520 is a chinese woman retard, you faggot ass weebs will try to claim any artist that's good.

I don't think he was aware of that when he made the post, calm down.

What's interesting is you can kinda sorta tell Japanese apart from Korean apart from Chinese depending on how heavily the artist leans into certain styles.

>I avoid copying faces because I feel like it's their signatures
Bold of you to assume you can even copy their faces completely. Faces are where subtle changes gives noticeable changes to the characters' impressions

>that's how shartdoesfarts draws
I know his art is weighted particularly heavy in AI datasets, but the way he draws faces feels so generic, and kinda gross - I also really thought it was AI, I just thought the faces are just too weird looking to be purposeful.
Also, why does joel look like the actor, but Ellie looks nothing like a potato?
>>

don't think so hard, just draw and your own style and preferences will come through. don't think "I'm drawing anime... I'm drawing western"
>>

My bad, I overlooked the weibo link and assumed she was Japanese because of her anime-ish art and the chinkrunes in her bio. Nevertheless, I think my point about how you can make anime-like art without sacrificing face quality stands.
>>7768534
Yeah, Chinese and Korean art tend to be more grounded
>>
>>7768582
Because Ellie is a potato.
>>
>>7768596
Yes, that's what I'm saying. The drawing looks nothing like the actress.
>>
just fucking draw. style comes naturally through your preferences, experimentation, the way you see the world, and the way you use a pen. stop thinking so hard about style and just fucking draw. improve elsewhere.

Pic related is Range Murata, the dude known for semi-realistic moe lolis. I find his male characters much more visually appealing since they're grounded in reality. I love all the subtle detail in the nasolabial folds, the attention to the proportions of the face, the brow ridge and shape of the jaw, etc. He doesn't disregard these rules for his moe girl characters, he just designs them to be much more neotenous.

There is something deeply repulsive about this image, I hate their faces, especially the girl's

because drawing her accurately would get him nuked on social media. Funny enough, he got assblasted for not drawing her accurately.

those guy faces are very impressive

I haven't analyzed his art deeply but a quick look makes me think he might suffer from part of the issue I'm bringing up

their faces are pretty much the same, what distinguishes them is mostly the iconic hair, colors and accessories, features most animators or HQ artists use to distinguish their characters given the simplicity of the facial features.

I feel like part of the issue I'm bringing up is heavily dependent on pretty female facial features

Learning to draw unattractive people in a appealing way is a skill more artists should work on.
They don't have to be hot to be presented in an appealing way, this goes for real people and for stylised characters.

OP here. here is a small comp of some faces I did over the years.

my self analysis is this and questions looking at my own stuff is:
1. I do know my most recent faces look worse, I'm coming back from a couple of months without drawing and have been focusing more on bodies since I returned. I have also being trying to experiment with strong expressions rather than neutral faces.
2. my originals have no consistency of style in them. if I draw a face style once, it seems the style is never repeated again. I also don't know how to choose one.
3. even if I choose a style, I'm not sure how I could repeat it consistently. is this something artists actively work on? I don`t feel like people would look at one my drawings or the other and instantly recognize me. should I even aim to get that? or do I want it because most artists I know/admire are like that?

you draw the nose the same in all your pics at least...
