How do those of you who primarily draw anime deal with the problem of face shapes having these subtle curves and "cherubic" elements? Do you have to redraw the cheeks of a face like 50 times like I do every time I do an anime study? I feel like it's so easy to mess up the "chubby" look on cheeks, make them look retarded etc.

If the answer is just "draw more anime heads" then I'll take that, I'm not allergic to hard work.

find a settei sheet of your ideal anime head and copying it from reference/memory until you can do it from imagination from multiple angles
there are different styles and different shaped ones to show different personalities too

Yes.

there is no construction for the cheek, you have to deform it to find the most appealing shape for every angle.

when they make 3d models of anime girls with big cheeks, they have to deform the cheeks based on the camera angle and it looks fucked up in the actual model editing program.

Yes
Best way is to draw it once with thick line
Then sculpt the cheeks out while looking at the thumbnail
Then redrawing over the cheeks. Usually it took around 2-5 tries before I'm satisfied

What about figures though? Those look good from all angles

There's no way around it, if you want to get good at drawing something, you have to practice it over and over and over and over. Spend time analyzing for mistakes areas to improve etc

Well what anon is referring to is, unlike a traditional anime 3D fig, when creating a model for 3D meant for animation animators tend to struggle getting it to animate like 2D or have it look like its 2D counterpart, so sometimes you see rendering where some of the parts of the face are actually cut off in the program but rendered it looks fine, or the mouth isnt actually there, shit like that.
Like look at pic related. Ancient looking I know, but model wise it looks about on par with a decent anime fig, but it doesnt look like actual ANIME, if you want something that achieves that illusion look at Girls Band Cry which probably has a ton of rendering tricks to get the anime look, but probably doesnt have to cheat so much unlike past efforts. Japan pretty much has the anime look in 3D locked in either choosing to just look like basic 3D like that last Lupin movie, or for more 2D looking stuff Belle and Girls Band Cry shows that they figured it out at this point. If you get a show that looks like that Berserk 3D abomination its just the studios fault at that point.

I think at this point most people's interaction with anime-style is gacha crap. So in a way the figures kind of are on point. They just look really sterile.

i've never really struggled with it...? struggle more with the shape of the eyes, since they have specific ways they curve around the head that i find hard to get.

the head shape is the first thing i draw when i draw people, and i doodle random people alot, so that might be why i don't find it hard. forced memorization over the span of a long time.

i agree with the first anon, study a bunch of settei sheets and do drawing reps from different angles. you can also copy from character expression sheets (from anime concept art). you'll memorize it quickly.

Sometimes I will sculpt out a character like this if I get it wrong. But if it goes well I can draw the basis of a character very quickly.
It's often way better if a character is less constructed. I don't pmw here so don't ask

Everyone who gets into art has this thought before: that doesn't look so impressive, I could probably get there.

But then at some point you realize even the most simplistic anime art can have thousands upon thousands of hours of experience and decision making baked into each stroke.

If a line or a curve is off by even 2 degrees the feeling can change drastically, and each little deviation adds up. It's the reason why you see begs/ints with art that looks off even if you can't exactly pinpoint why.

So basically, just practice more, there's no way around it.

dismiss any advice without work attached that is drawn by the poster and not an industry vet

Yeah the chin of anime heads filters me hard
I use a mutated for of the loomis method, but I've yet to come across a good way of getting the chin/jawline down so it looks right
It's a struggle, I'll tell you that

I never said it's easy, or that it's as simple as normie dummies make it out to be. I know it's tough and that it requires effort, I just find that I struggle with this one part of drawing cute anime girls more than anything else. Thanks everyone for the thoughtful replies itt
