has anyone else ever noticed that the worst art-hosting websites are usually the ones that incorporate aspects of social media?deviantart is one such example: little reddit-style badges for people to show off, comments sections on profile/submissions, journal feature for blogposting, two separate "chat" features that seem to be redundant.once art websites become social media, they end up becoming a battleground for culture wars and the whole darn site is more bots than people. the bots of course are there to fake engagement through likes/comments and often times phishing.the only thing worse than this is actual social media sites, which artists use because they're a good way to be seen but they compress the fuck out of your artwork and usually have very restrictive policies on adult content. DeviantArt's one appeal to me is that it's practically unmoderated as long as you don't say any slurs or post genitals.these days i mostly use itaku.ee for my art because they don't compress my art and they support APNG animations. i pay $55 a year to upload images up to 50 MB, but with a free account the limit is 10 MB or so. they also have a ban on political shit but allow any kind of art besides lolicon stuff. i still use deviantart for contacting fellow artists for commissions and for hosting very large GIF files that would overwhelm a smaller site like itaku, but it's very much a downhill website. ever since newgrounds started using the antichrist format (webp) for compression, i stopped using it. there is no alternative besides furry-specific sites and social media.
