What's the best way to preserve colored pencil on paper without laminating it? I'm talking hundreds of years later here.
>>7904722Sealant? That's what it's designed for. A common trick is to use hairspray if you have no sealant around for your art, though I'm unsure if it'd have any other effect (like causing discolouration after time), but that's the cost of cheaping out and not buying the real deal, I suppose.Sealant aside, there's also just framing the art (behind glass), and ensuring you keep it out of direct sunlight (the biggest killer of most things, from a preservation standpoint). Also, make sure to take into account the papers acidity, which is apparently a problem that causes brittling of the paper, yellowing, and and slow corrosion of the art. For example, you don't want to back your art with cardboard, which is apparently a more acidic material and causes yellowing and degradation more quickly.
To expand on the other person's comment, there are 4 factors at play:- The pencil itself. The core is a combination of pigments, binders and fillers. These can be organic in nature, or in general chemically unstable, and it can degrade over time.- The paper, as anon said, can be acidic, and damage itself, and the material on it.- Light, especially sunlight, will have a deleterious effect on both paper and pencil, mainly due to the UV rays.- The environment air, specifically the temperature and moisture. Too high is not good, nor are big swings (that's why in museums they have those big thermohygrographs, with a roll of paper and swinging needles. So, to make sure coloured pencil is preserved, do the following:- Use good pencils with very high lightfastness, like Derwent Lightfast or Caran d'Ache Luminance.- Use good acid-free paper, and use extra acid-free folders and protective paper layers in between the paper sheets.- Keep it in a dark drawer, or hang the drawing on a wall not exposed to direct sunlight. You can use a frame with special glass with UV blocking film.- Make sure the room it is stored in is stable regarding temperature and moisture, far from a heat source.
