You know what guys? I genuinely like the art style of older american comic books
>>7920609Capeshit is gay full of steroid muscle men
I'm sure this thread will be productive and insightful.
It's just Loomis and Bridgman in gay spandex
"How to Draw Marvel Way" is not a bad one to learn fromThough from what I remember they had some hilarious mistakes in their perspective examples
>>7920611> I hate being an strong muscular SUPER HEROThe absolute pussyfication state of america ...
I don't think people have a problem with the art OP, just the subject of superheroes, thus the 'capeshit' moniker.I also quite like the art of older comic books.
>>7920609>>7920611american comic books do have a general charm of looking heavily stylized while still maintaining realism. my main critique of mangaslop is that, while visual appealing, they omit a ton of detail like noses and chins and the characters end up being plain and same-y.that being said, i do not like the huge variance in art styles in western cartoons. i could not read the IDW TMNT comics because they would have a new lead artist for every damn volume and it was hard to feel immersed in what was supposed to be a continuous story. there is no quality control in american comics, but if you're main issue is seeing buff men all the time, then you clearly haven't been paying attention to all of the pretty girls like picrel.
>>7920745I feel like the best of both worlds was when Japanese artists drew capeshit like in Marvel vs Capcom and American artists had anime-influenced art styles in the 2000s. Both were still rooted in their cultures' native art movements and art education, but learned from the other in a beautiful way.Just the right amount of detail and lack thereof.
>>7920803that reminds me of the original teen titans series that was pretty heavily influenced by anime. they created an appealing art style that still had the same poorly lit, dark, empty urban aesthetic that DC is famous for (especially anything batman).however i think that the genius of old 2000s cartoons is that they had to tell a mature story while keeping explicit violence and language down. while i dislike censorship institutions of any kind, i feel like everyone is trying to be deadpool or rick and morty nowadays with over-the-top violence and swearing coupled with nihilistic "meta" humor and i swear i can smell the millennial writers' avacado toast through the screen.our idea of "Style" as it relates to art, comics, and movies is really just a combination of easy workarounds for technical, economic, or censorship constraints. we honestly should be more creative without these constraints now that anything is feasible but we've encountered the same issue that unoptimized AAA games have now where no one puts any thought into it.
>>7920609I've been getting these random 80s cartoons recs on youtube in this style that look pretty cool that I didn't know existed. Not sure if Japan animated those or the west.
>>7920609Depends how old. Golden Age is trash.
>>7920611That's what makes it amazing you retard.
>>7920626Elaborate?
I always enjoyed the look of Spider-Man 2099: the particular stylisation of the anatomy was always very appealing, and the colours were nice, if limited.
>>7920965That would take me more than 2 minutes so fuck you
take the kirbypill
>>7920862I assume you mean stuff like G.I.Joe and M.A.S.K. Marvel was actually involved with G.I.Joe and Transformers and made tie-in comics with those. The shows were animated by westerns studios like Sunbow and DIC but in some cases like TF it was in collaboration with japanese studios like Toei. You could always tell when they were outsourcing stuff to asia because the animation would randomly be far better all of a sudden lol.
>>7920611>steak is full of meat juices>cake is full of cream and sugar>music is full of noisesincredible insight
And then there was Filmation which had been making cartoons in a similar style since the 60s and they also made some capeshit stuff like Batman. I actually thought they made the classic Spider-man cartoon but it appears that was done by some canadian studio. There used to be a whole industry but it's all gone.
>>7920988spiderman is the true crossover figure for capeshit, even batman weirded out normies enough that the jokes about him being a gay pedo are commonplace to this day, but everyone thinks that some iteration of spiderman is genuinely kinda cool, whether its the raimi one, the one from the games, 2099, unlimited, etc
>>7920961wrong
>>7920961There's a lot of good art in the American golden age of comics
>>7921159Yeah, even the Japs love Spider-Man. I think he's the most popular superhero, with Batman and Superman(?) taking second and third place.
>>7921166>wordswordswords>inconsequential drawing of a talking headthis is my real issue with american comics, it's like they're all written by failed sitcom writers with no comprehension of visual storytelling
>>7921171>why would there be text in a bookAre you sure you weren't looking for animated cartoons instead? Those are written for literal toddlers like you.
>Are you sure you weren't looking for animated cartoons instead? Those are written for literal toddlers like you.
>>7921173>this reads like it was written for a sitcom and badly adapted to a different medium with no understanding of visual storytelling >ummmmmmmm ACKSCHUYALLIE the physical form this medium occupies is the same as that of literature and instruction manuals - a book - therefore it doesn't possess intrinsic qualities not found in those that require consideration. I am extremely intelligent okay, retard, now tell me how an aerobic exercise dvd is a film
>>7921152kirby had a lot of woke opinions about nazis, sadly. but he's still the forefather of american comics.
>>7921156>>7920963Gay
>>7921160I love EC Comics, but they're barely Golden Age.
>>7921166I'll always find it amusing that Frank Frazetta always drew himself in his comics.
>>7921159spiderman doesn't seem all that spider-y if you think about it. i mean, "bat" man is a cold, scary shadow of the night, but spiders are also scary and spiderman is just some chill highschool nerd. spiders-man is a literal hivemind of tiny spiders inside of a spandex suit, THAT'S what i would expect from a spider-themed superbeing
>>7921788og spider-man was a borderline psychopath
>>7921719>always drew himselfIts an easy always available model, so it's hardly a wonder.
>>7921719He also drew his naked wife, a lot, so much so that his wife got sick of modeling for him but stuck with it anyways
Imagine being filtered by a kiddy medium like comics because you can't read LMAO
>>7922067It's hard to get back into capeshit when you're used to better stuff.
>>7922061oh yeah, I bet she hated it so much
>>7921719well, he was a gigachad phenotype so why not lol. There's photos of him with Clint Eastwood and Stallone and he kind of mogs them
>>7921171>this is my real issue with american comics, it's like they're all written by failed sitcom writers with no comprehension of visual storytellingThat's why you shouldn't read comics written by one guy and drawn by another, read comics written by one creator doing the writing and art who understands visual storytelling.
>>7922279>read comics written by one creator doing the writing and artThat's not the norm in American comics, though, that's exactly the thing.
>>7922283It's not the norm in capeshit from Marvel and DC, but it does exist, and means you'll spend more time and less money on actual quality and less slop. Even Marvel and DC have had a few runs and mini-series that follow this, like Matt Wagner's Batman work, Dark Knight Returns, recently Clobberin' Time from Steve Skroce, etc.
>>7920745Artstyle immensely varies in comics, to ultra-realistic to very cartoony. Sometimes the artstyle is great, sometimes it's repulsively bad. It's harder to talk about in general terms unlike manga. (Though even in manga there are standouts that are more stylized/realistic than the usual)
>>7920988This is revolting to look at and you are objectively a retardThis is two people, or maybe even 3, trying to do 1 job and the result you see is revoltingThe pencil, the ink and the colorist are all trying to make shadows and volume independantly, and in result it looks like shitI can see the pencil going "Here's the volume, I'm going to crosshatch it", then the inks "HERE'S MORE VOLUME I'LL BLOCK THE SHADOWS" and then the colorist "HERE THIS PART NEEDS SHADOWS I'LL ADD THEM HERE THOSE GUYS DIDN'T DO IT"This is textbook soulless: Every man do their job in an assembly line without even talking to each other
>>7921719If you have the right look, why not? A model you dont have to pay that is available 24/7
>>7920638this is fake strengh tho, performative catwalk musclebuilding, you can be lean and still possibly way "stronger" than average roiderthe fact that there are guys in their fuckin 20s chasing this sort of mentally ill fake aesthetic of being a man is in some ways worse or at the very least just as bad as trooning out
>>7921640Kirby fought in WWII and likely killed nazis LOL
>>7922623>is in some ways worse or at the very least just as bad as trooning outYeah, exercising and chasing an ideal is far worse than self mutilation, you're right.
>>7920638>beingYou're not "being" anything while reading comics, unless you mean being a faggot who stares at cartoon muscle men's crotches while they spread their legs far and wide
>>7922672>t. reads something literally called man gay
>>7921640kill all nazis
>>7920609It might sound söy of me to say but I still think pic related is one of the best pieces of art I’ve seen. I really really like this style.
>>7923285Nah that's a correct opinion, Bernie Wrightson is one of the greatest American artists of the 20th Century. His Frankenstein art is awe-inspiring.
>>7921171this page is honestly a bit better because the speech bubbles at least lead the eye
>>7922665>exercising and chasing an ideal is far worse than self mutilationactually any good troon who wants to successfully pass exercises and diets extensively too, a roider taking hormones and getting plastic surgery to adhere to arbitrary standards of beauty is the exact same as a tranny doing so
and both are fine
>>7921788Have you not heard the theme song?He does whatever a spider can.
>>7924154can he lay eggs?
I sorta prefer the French-Belgian comics of the 70s. The characters are more stylized and it looks more gritty. BTW I'm not into giantess lol. It's just the first thing I found on the archive.
>>7924593manara is italian...
>>7924596He worked for frogs and was published in frog mags, the comics are french, deal with it.Burger capeshit is mostly made by mexicans if you look at the names these days, it's still burgerslop
>>7924598well enjoy your mexican comics

>>7922435That is 99% of comics outside of indie/ creator-owned titles. You're saying that no comics can have good illustration because the final product is a collaborative effort. You're a tryhard pseud making his best effort to appear cultured and knowledgeable in a discussion about capeshit.Cope and/ or rope.
>>7921719damn, if I looked like this i'd also draw myself all the time

>>7924739>because the final product is a collaborative effort. Please, look at the spiderman picture and point me to the light source direction.I'll wait. This isn't "collaborative", it's compounding redundancy, because every man is protecting their job and doing more where is not needed to justify their job.A collaborative job is you making a concrete sidewalk, leaving a square space for the gardener to plant a tree and a round one for an electrician's utility pole.Compounding redundancy to inflate jobs, is you completely fill the sidewalk with concrete, the gardener breaks a square to plant the tree and breaks four round spaces and paints the sidewalk, and the electrician puts his utility pole, fills the extra holes and scrapes the paint. Everyone charges x2 and the result is trash.
>>7920609they have a certain charm
>>7920609It's kinda funny and weird how many zoomers and zillennials born from the mid 90s onward have a weird anti-western style thing going on now, but I guess it's just how things go. Anime and japanese media in general were weird and dumb to us "old school" pre-2000 nerds, and now comics and western games are ugly and dumb to younger people. I also noticed that lot of weebs have like a weird face autism and think anything with grounded or realistic faces is ugly in art for some weird goddamn reason. Even if it's anime/manga if you show a kid Tetsuo Hara or Ryoichi Ikegami art I bet they'll call it ugly but if you made the faces more generic modern anime-like they'll like it.
>>7925578>Frank MillerYou should differentiate between Frank Miller (Early) Frank Miller (Mid) and Frank Miller (Late)like you're differentiating the Gokus in budokai
>>7924767The thing of Dragotta is he's trying to emulate manga story telling but with fewer pages per month I guess he maxes out on all the fucking panels per page
>>7926128It's not high art ffs, it's rule-of-cool pop. If you look at the poses on that page and start deconstructing them instead of thinking "damn, that looks cool", then you're missing the point.Yes, the action poses are stiff and/ or nonsensical, and the lighting and/ or colouring might not be correct, but that's not why you're picking up a capeshit funnybook.Comics are made primarily to be a cheap monthly spectacle, and if you're expecting more than some cool panels and, occasionally, some nice stylisation, then you're looking in the wrong place.

>>7931227Frank Miller got better over time, mostly, imo. Depends on what you define as middle period or late period since DK2 and the last Sin City are now 20+ years old. His early art is kind of jank as much as I like his DD run with Klaus Janson. His Wolverine was OK and closest to house style Miller ever got. Ronin stars with him trying to do Bilal and it ends with his own proto-Sin City style which works better. The parts of Dark Knight that he inks himself are better than Klaus. Elektra Lives Again is him doing a BD mixed ith Ukiyo-e lines and manga and Film Noir and it's great. Sin City (all of them) is his peak. Xerxes has SHIT colours but the drawing looks fine to me. I really like the covers he's been doing recently. he's still got it
>>7934497Nothing that you said is against what I said or proves me wrong. Thanks I guess?
>>7922279>>7922283>>7922286Am I the only one who dislikes Frank Miller's art?
>>7935528NoI've always found it lazy and simplistic. On the other hand, having tried making comics myself, I 100% understand why he does that.
>>7935528I wouldn't like it as an illustration, but he's absolutely amazing as a comic artist, sin city is easily in too 20 best made comics of all time
>>7921171I agree- wordspam like this fails to take true advantage of the medium.
>>7935537Nothing lazy about it. You don't draw.
>>7935528Depends on the comic. I like sin city and before, but the stuff after sin city doesn’t do it for me. A lot of it is the coloring though, especially in books like The Dark Knight Strikes Again, where these cartoony characters are given generic comic rendering from the era and they look awful. Honestly, a lot of what makes western comics not work is the coloring. Coloring in flats is just more graphic and interesting than everything being rendered, but colors are treated like an afterthought in western comics.
>>7935631if you're good at color, you've got better things to do than color someone's drawings of spider-man
