Well?
it helps you improve at drawing boxes
pikat more like pay ad lmoa you are gay
>>7924657It does. Drawabox is still garbage though.
>>7924691>Drawabox is still garbage though.i understood this once it took 10 pages to get to actual instructions
>>7924657I don't think it matters what you draw as long as you're drawing. The early stages of learning art are about volume. You can refine your work later
>>7924757>are about volume.how do you create volume if you can't create simple geometric shapes in space
Doing anything correctly with consistency improves your craft. Doing anything by rote does not. Any other questions?
>>7924759Practice
>>7924757>>7924759The early stages should be acquiring mastery over hand and eye, by drawingstraight linesplacing points equally spacedjudging by eye and correcting if necessarydrawing a line between the pointsfirst short, then longparallel to one anotherperpendicularobliqueforming squaresrectanglesand other basic shapes and designs using straight linesThen moving on to curves, judging the degree and symmetry of the curvature in relation to straight lines. These are the basics without which everything else is a struggle.
>>7924657Yes and no. Yes , it helps you draw geometric forms and understand general perspective and helps for recognizing tilts and plane changes in the major masses in the body. In my personal experience I'd say it doesn't do shit for figures for how much it's touted online for beginners...People think if they can simply learn how to draw bodies with a the right formula with boxes and simple forms, they can suddenly sidestep any need for "simple" measuring and honest-to-god copying of images. Most people studying art have a limited time and energy to actively practice, and those efforts would be much better spent drawing observing and drawing real people from life or photographs everyday, or doing a master study of artworks they actually love. Figures you simply need to do tons tons and tons of them to really start to grasp even the basic fundamentals such proportion because your brain will always play tricks on you.Boxes and simple forms are great abstractions but only useful if you actually have experience on what the thing you're drawing is supposed to like from memory. Without solid and sincere observational drawing and implementation, constructional methods don't really help someone make better figures.
>>7924657Pikat is deliberately making an obtuse , over simplified title as cheap bait to lure stupid beginners into her video to make broad sweeping claims about learning art by watching more of her videos. I think the topic is highly nuanced and very much dependent on the students needs and their overall goals as an illustrator or designer. She knows this and a lot of the people watching this video likely feels this as well , but choose to deliberately ignore it because they'd realize they're wasting their time watching slop videos like this.
>>7924771Isn't all that what Drawabox makes you do.
>>7924657I think Draw a Box is like putting the cart before the horse: "helping to draw characters in dynamic poses." Wouldn't it be necessary to first learn how to draw the basics of a character, then perspective, and only then use the "boxes" as a guide to contruct more dynamic poses?
>>7925005I think it's fine to do a few boxes/cylinders/cones type shit with basic shading early on, especially if you don't fully understand drawing with depth. But as soon as you can reliably shit out basic perspective and make forms feel like they occupy a space, then yes, move onto proportion and anatomy asap. I think it's important to be able to perceive and display volume on paper in order to draw proper torsos, hips, and limbs in fun positions, otherwise you end up with the permabeg flat symbol drawing anime girls you see on /asg/ and howie threads.I never really did the retarded shit in your picrel of drawing a full polygonal mannequin then painting anatomy over it, feels like a waste of time. I might occasionally throw some basic geometry if it's some crazy foreshortening or weird angle I'm struggling with, but otherwise, once basic volumes click, you no longer need them much.
>>7924657Buy an ad.
>>7924883Don't know because I've never looked at it. But people are talking about drawing boxes, which are 3D forms. I'm saying 2D should come first, specifically training of the eye to judge distance and angle, and training of the hand to execute.
>>7925018I recently started doing pixel art, and people said I needed to learn to draw traditionally, and Draw a Box felt like my soul was being sucked out of my body. Maybe I'll have to learn gesture drawing later, but wow did i wanted to kill myself doing it
>>7924657Watch the video and tell us.
the internet art community is retarded because they operate without context or planning. they don't know why they do anything and they have no way to measure their own improvement. the mentality they've developed around improvement is so utterly fucked you cannot talk them out of it because the conversation is completely dominated by retards who don't actually understand anything and that will drown out any sensible advice that can be received. the question itself "Does drawing boxes actually improve your art?"Just shows a complete and utter lack of context. It's the equivalent of a chef questioning if Oregano will improve your cooking. IT FUCKING DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU'RE COOKING! FUCK. I probably shouldn't even be mad at the video. The videos author probably knows her video is meant to appeal to utter drooling retards with attention spans shorter than an nanosecond who will look at her query with genuine curiosity.
How many years has it been since /ic/ started having this discussion? Dear reader, do you believe that you will gain any new insight into this topic by reading this thread? Instead of reading this reply in a kusothread, go and draw.
>>7924657now I am confuised, do I drawabox or find something else? I work 70 hour work week
>>7925063That’s the cost of reading /ic/
Yeah. Do boxes for a week when you are starting out. If you are still doing boxes after that, rather than drawing what inspired you to draw in the first place, you are NGMI.
i do boxes/lines as a warm up then draw what i want. do people actually give a whole study session to this shit?
>make 1000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before you can start cooking for yourself>write out the dictionary 100 times before you can start writing stories>rape 100 women before you can start asking them out
>>7924657to me, draw a box is to drawing like crawling is to running. An important early stage, but which is crippling if you dont know how to evolve into the next stage.Putting your subject into a box / square is a good visual tool to approximate angles, lengths and connections between lines. Plumb lines, contours, are basically the same thing, different packaging.Focusing 90% of your effort on drawing good boxes beyond, lets say, 20 hours, means you are crippling yourself at the early stages, and never get to run. Should you come back to this kind of exercises, even after you become a master? Certainly. Muscle isolation is good as a warm up, recovering, covering bottlenecks. You basically need this from time to time, 10-15 mins before starting your day, or a few days in the very early stages.Do both quick sketches, and finalized works. Do both constructions, and details. Dont get lost into one of them.(well, reading the replies while waiting for captcha, I am repeating what everybody else is saying. Good to see ic is not retarted.)
>>7925520>to me, draw a box is to drawing like crawling is to runningYes but it's also like sending babies to a military boot camp to learn how to crawl under fire while wearing full combat gear, when most babies just figure it out on their own and move on the moment they learn to walk. It's good that begs learn basics like how to draw cubes in perspective but you really don't need to hone that shit to the absolute perfection before you move on to other things, that's just the definition of autism sorry
>>7925531thats what I said too. dont try to become a master crawler thinking it will make you the best runner too. Beyond a point it make your body unable to actually run, hence, crippling you.Who cares you are the best crawler, when crawling to save your life happens maybe once in your life, to 0.5% of people?
>>7925531Same anon replying to you.>when most babies just figure it out on their own and move on the moment they learn to walk. That being said, MOST babies, is not ALL babies. I understand what DrawABox is trying to do. But he s failing to transition his material into the next stage. If he was a teacher in a row of teachers in a school, that would not be a problem.
>>7924721>10 pagesKek yes
>>7925005I think beginners have to do is simply look at artwork and artists they like and try to copy their artwork 1 to 1. Don't worry about the technical bits yet just build your taste up for the first 1-2 years. Afterwards you can try any of the beginner courses (including dab) to bring structure into what you're already drawing.
>>7925063Based realisticchad
>>7925063holy shita post made by an anon with an IQ above 100? ON MY /IC/?holy fuck i'm fucking hard right now
The video's author shouldn't be listened to based on the thumbnail alone
