Why do some japanese artists draw boob shadows like this? It doesn't look like that in real life unless you're looking at them from below, or in an almost opposite direction of the light source.

It is probably the best looking way to depict the volume of the breasts with cel shading.

It can look like that in real life, especially with smaller breasts. The reason they do it is because it's a effective shorthand for illustrating the conical depth of the breasts.

Cartoonists (especially animators) create hierarchies of detail out of necessity. If they can sufficiently capture the symbol of breasts by adding sunglasses as shadows, why shouldn't they?
