Tangentially related, but i made these scaled pixel arts based on adamkop's rendition of the arwing and wolfen from star fox. the arwing is mostly based off of command/assault while the wolfen is the N64 version.

once adam sends me a mapped interior for the great fox, i plan on making super small floor plans for it based on this scale, which is big enough for basic beds and chairs but small enough that i can fit a 450-meter craft into 3000 pixels.

Tried to practice a few things with this sketch but there's still a lot that falls apart when I examine it too closely.
It feels like my drawing process is just too 'vibes based' and instead of trying to visualize forms in 3D I'll just draw lines over and over and over until it looks somewhat right in my head. It takes a grueling amount of time to draw anything because of this (8 hours for this lol) and big flaws always reveal themselves at the very end when they're hardest to change. I think I need to sit down do studies/exercises more often.

Is adding blue to make my shadows just a mistake?
Is using gouache to make opaque color a mistake? Should I just leave half transparent colors everywhere?
>>
>>7939781
If you want cooler shadows, tinting them towards is perfectly advisable, even cooler greens and deep purples are good for cold shadows. It all depends on what colors are surrounding your blue shadows, if it is surrounded by earthy and warm colors it's going to read darker and sell the effect of a shadow, if it is surrounded by similarly cool colors, the effect will be less dramatic and you may need to darken the values of your shadow or surround it with lighter values in order to sell the effect.
> Is using gouache to make opaque color a mistake?
It's not a mistake, but there is some care you have to take when using both watercolor and gouache, if you end up mixing too much of your gouache directly with your watercolor you can end up depositing a lot of chalk on your watercolor squares, which may make the watercolor itself more opaque and less able to do the typical watercolor washes with a lot of transparency, but even that can be remediated by trying to lift the top layer where the gouache has deposited. One thing that can be good is to have a separate pan to mix your watercolor with your gouache, set a little bit of blue gouache together with a highly pigmented blue watercolor wash to have a more opaque blue that still flows like a watercolor, for example. Now, if you're using white gouache to make everything opaque you may be killing the vibrancy of your colors a bit, but even that can help you achieve more muted and pastel tones.
>Should I just leave half transparent colors everywhere?
Honestly, that also really depends on what you're going for. Watercolors are transparent paints by nature, they are typically used when you want transparencies and softer color transitions. Gouache is very similar to watercolor, but it is by its nature more opaque, it has a lot of chalk added to it, if you want your work to be mostly opaque, why don't you try using gouache as you main paint? Or reserve it as a final layer.

I would appreciate as much feedback/where to go next with pictures like this. I feel like I got dynamic poses right and I can sort of make a space around it, but connecting the limbs still give me trouble especially when I try to do some more animal-like feet. Probably need to grind anatomy studies this summer. Though I think I've progressed enough to start a comic that's not just 3/4th people standing and talking.

First of all I have to stress I'm ADHD so my whole 3 braincells ping around my skull like a DVD_Logo screensaver so results vary very wildly.

But it generally starts as either a "haha funny animal talking"/"Situation/Setup_X+CharaY" idea and then doodling out poses pose search
or
A buncha setup practice poses (I gotta do those anyway) and then hope to all Gouda you can put one of them on an imaginary magazine cover like they did back in the day or something.

So I already had Computer Mice previously, and did PC (mis)Advice Mice doodles and then the "haha mouse is a mouse -> mice chew cables" thing popped in.

It's usually poses -> then idea lately as I already have a bunch of presets like Animals & Computers, Pet(ting) Sematary, or Reasonable Rabbits With Swords (Reasonably Reasonable For a Rabbit With a Sword).

I got a bunch of old mags I really like and they had amazing cover texts and designs like Man's Life (the one where weasels eat a guy's face!), MAD, EpicIllustrated (RIP Readcomics), AD2000 (pre1999), and such.
Comicartfans/com has whole galleries for people who did cover/pinup arts (Frazetta/CatherineJones/MikeHoffman) so I got a general reference mix to see how it should look like.

So right now (unless I need something specific) my most common way is do practice doodle rounds and then see what clicks/seems best, and have a .txt file open to quickly type up whatever feels like it'd go with it. Right now pure text placement/setup takes as much or longer than actually drawing the doodle so I gotta use the .txt file rather than straight up text/text-panel in the drawfile.

I used to do whole frame + textblock setups first and then write in sillies & adjust but that just ate too much time.
>>
>>7941620
Thanks! I need to do more practice doodles for posing rather than one shotting it like I normally do. I'll try and make up for a no-pic response in the morning, though no promises.
Thanks again!

You're welcome! And yeah, most people I saw do at least a couple takes unless you already have a setup/idea and specific references you gotta stick to. (image2, friend linked her all like "I got one for your mice!" so all I needed was a text idea)

Images 1 & 3 are tryouts/reject pile.Got the poses, got the text, I don't think they're bad, but they didn't *click*. I might pick them up later or they may stay like this forever. No one knows where that goes. I got a ton of such doodles.

So basically if you're doing "Skateboard Jane '47" pose doodles you already have a setup+chara (skateboard+location & girl + I wanna skate!). Once you have a couple initial poses done you can pick the nicest one and think up what happens to her and where. Then cross-ref with the sense of humor TV waves imprinted on your brain and you might get a text to go with it like:
>cat (can't board)
>board (hates all life after she was cut in her prime in the Old Oak Forest)
>>"I got 9 lives, what's the worst that could happen?"
>>but the 10:30 train to Denver had 8 carts *and* an engine.
>>
>>7941590
>>7941636
Im outta time for a drawover feedback but the setup/idea is OK actually and I like it. There's def. something re. feet angling but the setup & chara itself is OK. Brick wall feels odd/off but I can't pin it as I'm outta time to go over it. Might work better as a classic cartoony wooden fence of some sort?

If you can, try to re-doodle the pose/setup (no shades, just general shape) and check a couple magazine covers or single-panel funny images and, on that re-doodled copy, see where text or title might go and draw the text blocks/squares with a red pencil?

Back when I did trad I had red/blue + regular black. Color pencils ought to work too. It helps a lot! Anyway she's cool!

Random question but does a sizeable amount of people still pay for commissions? I don’t post my art online but I’m really good at drawing furry art and can draw stuff like fat furries, inflation, diaper shit, scat (not that I am into it, I can just draw it lol). Do people still pay for commissions? I assumed with AI most wouldn’t but I remember the myths of fat furries paying hundreds for weight gain art and I want to start making some cash. If I started with no audience, could I expect to quickly form an audience by posting art, how many people still request commissions/is the market saturated and roughly how much could I expect to make from each type of commissions (eg sketch, coloured full piece)?

Went thru it. I'd personally go with a wooden fence. Chara looks/design are solid (I like 'em!) and the clothes fit her and set her up as a distinct cartoony girl. All in all, she's pretty cool, the pic is good, you should keep going anon!

Yes there's the leg/board anatomy thing but that's something you'll get done with practice. It'll also help you pick what kinda anatomy you want for the leg/feet style.

Anyway to go back to the graphic design thing on your drawing as a base:
>I know what character/where she is/what she does
>I get text idea while cooking
>standard framing/text placement
(Crumb as sample reference)
>sample text block placement frames
>no good idea how to put in the rail tracks in this setup (for now), they might go like this (lazy setting) or more angled & aligned with the perspective lines

Fence & tracks are totally re-alignable, I just can't think up a good one for them right now.

If you can totally grab at least a red pencil, ideally red & blue to see how that goes for you. Bonus: if you scan images you can tell the scanner to "ignore" red pencil lines, so you end up scanning final regular pencils only.
>>
>>7942095
Fuck yeah train tracks should totally go at an angle or should at least be in greater distance from her. But hey that's why you usually do a couple shots/tryouts with these!

I suppose I can work to try to add more cool greens and purples in to help pay nice with the rest of the colors. Is tinting like I have been doing the way to go, or should I mix it with the base colors, or would that throw things off?
For the last several months I have been using entirely gouache because its what I have in tubes and I hate mixing colors (Not good at it anyways). Put some on a pallet, half ass mix it, and use/reactivate every time I want to paint. Just not sure if I am playing to strengths.
>Honestly, that also really depends on what you're going for.
I guess thats the question, I really don't know what I am going for. I feel like I have an alright handle on linework, and can make something appealingish, but every time I add color it just throws things off.
>>
>>7942449
If you already have a base black, tinting it to adjust the temperature or to help integrate it with the other colors of the palette is perfectly fine, there's no real need to always mix a black from base colors, doing it can give you subtler shadows with different shades and temperatures, but honestly that's not something super important, and this is coming from someone who frequently mixes his own black with oil paints.
> Just not sure if I am playing to strengths.
Gouache is honestly so versatile that you don't really need to worry about that too much, it's not very good for painting on canvas and not the best choice for a technique like impasto (though you can do it if you are careful), but besides that, it's great for adding colors. If you use it because it's easy to set up and reactivate, you're already playing it well to its strengths.
> I really don't know what I am going for.
That can be tricky to find out. I feel like that most of the time too. But learning how to color is a bit of a separate process from learning how to draw, one will inform the other, but colors have their own particularities to look out for. You have any artists you really enjoy in terms of painting and such? Trying to copy a piece by them can give you a lot of insight.
>>
>>7942095
THANK YOU anon! I'll keep this in mind while I redraw/sketch the area. I don't have a scanner but I'll try and do some digital when I am able to.
I'll probably push the leg anatomy to be more aninal like, I luke how your red lines look with the more emphasized feet/paws. Thank you again!
>>
>>7942434
Unironically try a pixel/binary brush?

>>7942732
If you can go digital totally do it. I love trad and I started trad but its expensive and expenses build up. If you can get modern hardware and you're staring it ought to be better long term I think.
Worst case you'll at least save cash on physical assets and storage space for supplies (scanner/lightbox/erasers/pencils/inks/dyes/masking tapes/younameits).

Im on a screenless ancient minitablet so I can't really recommend anything but I think a display-screen modern thing should be great! Plus it helps a ton if your only drawfriends are online so you can get assistance quickly.

For right now if you don't have a scanner you can look up how people photograph their art with digicams and smartphones, I think some managed to make DIY lightboxes with old cardboard boxes and white cloth? If you don't go digital you'll need something like that for art photos.

From pure hardware I think regular printer paper works best for tryouts. Check regular and mechanical pencils and those erasers that look like a crayon, idk the name? "Stick eraser"? They help a ton and you can sharpen them like a thick crayon too. Totally grab red/blue pencils/crayon-pencils if you can, color helps a ton for WIPs.
For inking I used MICRON PIGMAs but you'll have to just go and see which thickness is best for you.
And remember - trad art allows it and you SHOULD copy/trace your own works to get them redone better. You can put your drawing on a piece of clear plastic or glass with a flashlight under, put paper on top, and redraw the better/correct lines like that. Or use house windows on a sunny day. Or use thinner paper on top of thick dark ink lines.
That way you can do a WIP in red, apply fixes/changes in black, put it on glass, put paper on top, redraw correct image.

Anyway totally try a bunch of things and have fun doing it!

Thinking about starting over on this. The watercolor pencil does seem to be a good way to define the lines.
>>7942541
So I did take it to heart about trying different colors like a red to try to darken say a brown in the pic. A bit leery on it still hence why its not too dark.
>it's not very good for painting on canvas and not the best choice for a technique like impasto
Not doing either of these so I should be alright kek.
>You have any artists you really enjoy in terms of painting and such? Trying to copy a piece by them can give you a lot of insight.
I like the Little Tail Bronx series, and I have quite a collection are art books that I do use to get ideas from. But there is a certain clean feel to their lines, or a certain way they make their colors work that I have a real hell of a time replicating.
The other thing I haven't quite figured out yes is if I like watercolor brushes, I have been using some for a while, but I started with idk oil or acrylic brushes which obviously got a bolder color and didn't hold nearly as much water.

Would appreciate critique

I want to say thank you again for the advice! I finally had some time and done these sketches, and I'm going to take it to digital ASAP and hopefully get it polished. I thought of scanning it with an old printer but it seems like the red/blue functionallity you talked about isn't really there for my old one, though I'll have to test with the colors later to see if it picks it up if I mess with some saturation settings.
I do have a screenless tablet and I've liked using it, so I'll just have to mess aroubd to get rid of being rusty.

part 2

I have no clue how to render and have been basically throwing shit at the wall to try and get a feel for what looks right, and this is quickly becoming a mess. I think I made a mistake half-assing the background because I've been left guessing what light sources should be in the scene.

I got this mess first after slapping dozens of layers on top of each other:
https://files.catbox.moe/pkzk2u.png

but it looked like rainbow sludge so i trimmed down a lot of the layers to get this:
https://files.catbox.moe/tlb966.png
Which i -think- looks better but i still wouldn't call it coherent.

the first one makes me think he's plastic wrapped in the stuff they make tinsel out of. Jokes aside, the colors of the first one make it feel like he's being strongly lit by a midday blue sky, despite his surroundings being that of an interior

the second one feels much more coherent since the colors are much more in line with what I would expect from interior lighting. Though this would also then imply you need to render as if he's being lit by point sources, which would make the shadows far more apparent

Really dig the composition and how your posing hints at some difference in character between them. Lovely bouquet of shark.

I like the iridescent-like one, but I would remove those light effects from the face and keep it on the dress, although the anon >>7947769 is right.

think the figure, muscles + fat always in volumes, (cylinders, spheres and boxes) and keep the big masses/underlying structure, ribcage and pelvis + spine in mind, the whole figure builds on them. Bridgman, Michael Hampton and Patrick Jones do a good job in teaching that imho.
also studies from real life, master studies (I personally like to look at stuff from kim jung gi, leyendecker, rockwell, dean cornwell) and drawing from imagination are always recommended
plus I like to give my characters props, makes them look more interesting and aids storytelling

drew a background, cleaned up the face, redid an arm, and tried to make the light sources more apparent

When I start coloring/shading a drawing, I usually just drop in colors that I think would be appropriate (coloring book style) and then adjust things using layers on top of that. Is that a good approach?

I don't think that looks worse at all. The lighting looks correct too. Maybe experiment with more light sources/directions/colors?

love the muscles on this guy's back

i was pretty deep in the community when i was younger and then hit a phase where i thought it was cringe and wanted to do more "serious" stuff... just kinda stopped drawing for most of the next 10 years instead lmfao but the little critters keep dragging me back

i keep trying to figure out how i can make a decade old style evolve and so my stuff is still pretty all over the place
