WHAT DO YOU MEAN I NEED TO DRAW ON MY PERSONAL FEELINGS TO INJECT TANGIBLE EMOTION INTO MY STORY'S NARRATIVE
>manga: takes forever, not suitable for social media posting, only weebs would be interested, little money potential, B&W = lame>webcomics: quick/low effort, easy to get social media engagement with strips, most demographics are interested, high money potential, color = interestingWhy are you still drawing manga? Your parents are secretly disappointed in you. They wish they had a successful kid whose comics get shared on social media, like pizzacake or merrivirus.
>>7952144>he didn't experience twenty lifetimes' worth of experiences and is able to draw deeply from all wells of emotion by the time he was 18NGMI. Sorry, I don't make the rules.
>>7952148>webcomics: quick/low effortsomeone tell him
>>7952151I'm a pansy and have a low threshold for what sets off my deeper feelings but I've found it's been useful for making stories at least since I don't need to experience too much too directly.
>>7952148That just means you haveshallow golem parents who want you to succeed solely so they can take the credit.>>7952166Webcomics trying to be actual comics are their own thing, I assume he means the one page a day drama or comedy slop comics that go nowhere for several years.
>>7952148>quick/low effortThe ugly 3D assets aren't there because it is low effort. They are there because of how long it takes to draw a fucking panel, especially with colors. The mainstream ones these days are literally made by studios of Koreans, so multiple people are working to make that many vertical strips on a weekly basis. Also, even though the entry barrier is lower, it has increased with the popularity of the medium.

>>7952306>a couple of yearsSociety will have collapsed by then.
>>7952242A sugestion: I think you can use more light and shadows and play more with the backgrounds. Here some quick example
>>7952338In my original, I had it drawn with an all-white background because the plot has them close to one of those magical founts that gets turned on, and I was trying to replicate all that light bouncing around everywhere in the courtyard they're in. On the other hand, I REALLY like yours due to the light play as you mentioned. I need to think about this, see if there is some kind of happy compromise I can justify, otherwise I might switch to your version simply for rule of cool.
>>7952350Devil anon, you have instances of your text leaving the live area of the pages. If you print the text might get clipped.
>>7952354He's not going to print it so he doesn't worry about that.
>>7952341Oh. With the image as the only context I thought they were looking at a magical storm far away through the window of a castle kek
>>7952361Nah man, I appreciate you taking the time regardless, thanks for your edits. Like I said, the shading looks very pretty.
>>7952350Yo I complimented the linework in the last thread but bro you botched my bitch's boots my G. Like even if your going for Megaman- sized boots at least add some care into the detail. Like I thought you were going for generic snow boots but if your gonna add more detail add the detail. Like draw the actual soles of the boots and have the laces do proper X overlaps. Or again if you dont want to put the effort into the detail just have the shoes like you had em in your earlier post >>7951418 and just have like two tones for the upper part and lower part of the shoe respectively
>>7952439Nta but I think you just have a preference for shoes in particular or something
>>7951834I dont recall ever stating where the character that I drew was from. Projecting your insecurities on me, anon?
>>7952449Its not a preference bro, its just that devil anon went from something that looked fine and made it sloppy and I offered things to make it better as all. Like I cheat when I draw shoes on my characters too but I usually just omit details cause it looks cleaner. Plus getting decent X lace marks is as easy as Shift+clicking with your brush(preferably a small sized one) to make some decent X's and draw over them slightly to get that hand made look
>>7952439lmao I think you are barking up the wrong tree with this one lad.
I'm close to showing off the powers soon, and haven't defined the look of the soul energy. All I could really see in my head was a ki cursed energy derivative. But I feel like soul energy would be more fantastical/magical looking, like an angelic glow. I might need to reference shoujo stuff. I've done that before for earlier hildas powers but it was always some external element. never an infused kind of effect.pic related is probably getting scrapped. I thought a different basic shaped tone for each character might be cool but id have to keep track of a lot of tones/assets over time.>>7952439yeah, will do. I haven't moved on to the background yet cause I feel like somethings could be better. the panel of dyson on the ground looks a little weird to be for example.
still going over the background and color, but do you think this looks better with or without the stronger outlines around the characters
and without
>>7952485>>7952486Impressive drawing man, with that in mind though if you are gonna go for "stronger" outlines make em STRONG broAs for general direction it depends on what you want to focus on, but since you have a lot of detail going on with the background characters you keep those light in lineweight and make the more regular characters up the front with stronger lineweight. However start with this drawing >>7952485as your base cause again that shit is not heavy lineweight at all, which does work for the BG characters but not so much for the lead characters up front
Also fix the bitch's face. I made a quick edit on how it should look but the main problem was that you made her face too wide especially in that eyeline area that you didnt indent, like you had that indent on the guy character not sure why you didnt do it with the girl
>>7952488Thanks that looks good, I'll give it a go and dial it up for the guy and girl at the front, and maybe add a bit more for the knife guy and mouse. Other 3 can just stay the same.
>>7952491also true now you point it out. looking at my pencils, i had one, but i guess i fucked the inking
>>7952471aaawwww its the power of <3
>>7952488>>7952491hows this look guys?In the mean time gonna do the color
>>7952439>>7952534you're doing pretty good. the thicker outlines do help. I like the poses, and faces.i think if you're going to color it, the hatching should ether be improved. or removed. some spots, like the faces have good hatching, places like the clothes don't. I think the inconsistency in the hatching quality is effecting the piece. A lot of areas have hatching lines that are too thick, and too spaced apart. I think starting there would help improve them.Id also recommend adjusting the lineweight of the background a bit. those lines feel a little too think,
>>7952534I really like the composition and designs. The weakest part of your art is how you draw wrinkles and folds, but I don't know how to do it myself so I can't suggest a better way. Another thing I think you should do is add even MORE line weight variation. If you are consistent with the hatching it will also elevate the drawing, make the hatching look like whats under the guys neck or the peackcocks neck, but in the same direction everywhere on the drawing. There are also places where solid black would add a lot, some of their clothes can be solid black, some of the animal people can have solidblack hair or accessories. Overall it looks interesting, it gives me the vibe like it can be a mainstream comic with the ideas it shows.
>>7952471If you want to go with shapes, Madoka might be a good place to look.
>>7952538thanks, I think some of the feedback you guys have given has helped me understand lineweight more, but yeah I'm still not the best with lineweightAlso 04-42-26 (Eastern Daylight Time)Brother I just doxxed you as an American, this is an Australian manga making board, go back to your first world country with decent internet.>>7952539Yeah I've always struggled with that shit, best thing to do right now would probably be for me to draw it minimally, and yeah also to make it consistent. Ill experiment with adding black after I do the color, see how it looksand yeah hopefully the comics idea is interesting. Haven't seen many comics or media about living in modernity, i.e. having a masters and being unable to find any work, even at maccas, so wanna capture how some people in our generation feel.
>>7952541> still not the best with lineweightI meant hatching
lettering feels a bit messy on this one. Real tired at this point so any fixes will come later
>>7952560goodnight cutie
>>7952560never proofred when tired, I wish I knew that sooner.
back to drawing
When you're making a one-shot, what do you guys do for the inside and back covers?
Well, it's the end of the month. So what have you accomplished this month, anons? Any plans for June?
>>7952534Something I didnt notice critiquing is that theres that hand thats reaching out to the main guy behind him. Unless you have a character that is just a hand like Thing from The Addams Family I assume its from the girl, if thats the case get rid of it.Again when I was critiquing I didnt notice that hand, with that in mind the girl character was already giving "reaching out" vibes, but now that I notice the hand it seems too disconnected from the female character. Like even if its anatomically correct the way you placed the hand seems pasted on composition wise. The way you drew the girl already works the hand is distracting(plus it also connects with the BBW character with the background and makes it look like her hand so that fucks up the vibe too)
Also you fucked up this guys hand and the way the flesh connects. You would also still be able to see his pinky finger in his hand position. I did a shitty MS Paint edit so you dont have to follow it one to one but it looks more "complete" this way
>>7952748Fuck not the pinky I meant the pointer finger
>>7952672A cute illustration thanking the reader for their time
>>7952816>"Thank you for purchasing this work!">that slight pang of guilt because I pirated it like usualNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
How do I learn to draw every waking hour of the day? If I don't draw atleast 10+ hours a day I'll never finished my manga before I die
>>7952880realistically you can draw 3 hours a day with normal output. Any more and you're giving up other aspects of your life.
>>7952741accomplished: finished a chapterplans for june: survive
>>7952880you don't "learn". you just do it. it's gonna suck, obviously.
>>7952560only one more page in the chapter plus the 2 page spread.
>>7952891Right on, i'm in the same boat. Not doing a great job but I'm down to the last 3 of 20 pages. Rip to next month's output since life has decided i'm a little chud nomad.
I find it so difficult to create a shorter story first to practice creating and finishing a work first before tackling my main one. One reason is I'm wired to think of big worlds with a bunch of shit, however it is especially difficult to keep myself focused on a smaller, less meaningful work. I'm making the script, and I already feel like rushing everything, or it becomes a monster really fast.
>>7952921Could just do like a side story in your existing setting or algo
>>7952921It is only less meaningful if you make it thay way. I'm experimenting with a lot of stuff right now but I go into each project with the intent of having it serve my greater ip
>>7951611
>>7952741Submitted my shit to publishers, ready to hear dead silence from all of them(I did get one response though, a rejection but at least I know someone at least glanced at it)Still drawing though, I need to thumbnail like 20 more pages and blast through inks after that to finish this arc
>>7952921You can always just do a cold plunge on your "big" idea and see if that shits working out or not. If your first go is shit try some other story after and revisit
Probably dumb question but can you pitch or submit an active web comic? I've seen self published web manga be licensed and always wondered how that worked
Sketched this out quick. Learned a handful of things from mistakes.
>>7953132Check the copypasta. I've gone through the links and once in a while one of those companies let you also submit your self-made stuff. Just note that a lot of them also have a lot of extra requirements. The ones that allow submissions at any time in my experience tend to be publishers who are always looking for more comics about minorities. Very specifically minorities. Not trying to start some kind of political screed, just literally my own experience going through the publishers.
>>7953132Yeah you can.
>>7953015I really like the shadow/blush under her eyes
how do you guys think the color looks. think it ruins or elevates >>7952534 ? Im ok with basic colors, but wanted to try and push it for this mock cover.>>7952744with color you think the hand still looks odd? If not, then yeah I got some other comments about it, and it could be best to delete. >>7953132A fair few have, and ive even heard of publishers contacting some webcomic creators hoping to publish their work. If you havent started it, I'd assume itd be a better idea to send it to publishers before you make it a webcomic. If nobody bites, publish it like how you were going to before, if they do, then hey your published
drafting/lining hefferchu comics, feedback welcomehttps://www.twitch.tv/efsius1/https://www.youtube.com/@efsius1/streams
>>7953022It's normal, maybe even expected to be failed over and over for any reason. You'll get anything you want badly enough.>>7953160One page is really hard especially when you've never done it before. Suddenly there's a lot to think about. How do you draw a deer? How do people hold bows before they fire an arrow? What does the perspective distance look like between the person and animal? Time to make another page.
>>7953316Hefferchu you fat fuck you're going to die from a heart attack one of these days if type 2 diabetes doesn't get you first.
>>7953304it's a bit dull to have everything in desaturated shades of green if you're going for Araki style maybe look at some of his color choices
>>7953384I have a love/hate relationship with the coloring for Jojo. It's so fucking garish and ugly............. but it also works insanely well and I technically can't find any fault with it because your eye instantly switches to what is interesting on the page, zero clutter.
>>7953383it's true, diabetes is no joke, you could easily lose a toe
>>7953304One, you forgot to color in the bitch's right shoulder. Cant blame you I always miss a spot in my art if someone doesnt point it otBut yeah, for it to work you need to draw the shoulder more raised cause it still looks disconnected. Or again you can just get rid of it. Less work and it would look fine. Also while your at it get rid of the hatching on the bitch's other hand, it reads less as shading and more like skin folds
Posting page
>>7953578I hurt my back for a while and wasn't able to draw so here's the previous page incase anybody has forgotten what happened last page
>>7953578Ah whoops I left the background sketch layer on
finished storyboarding
>>7953574>Cant blame you I always miss a spot in my art if someone doesnt point it otWhich comic is yours again?
>>7953384I was sorta color picking from some movies, although for a more "cinematic" look, but I have got some comments elsewhere that its a bit dull so I'll play around with it. I've been doing it on and off for a week between comic pages though, so sorta wanna just get it over with lol, I've spent too much time on it>>7953574Thanks for pointing that out, and yeah Ill raise the shoulder, and get rid of the hatching>>7953683Isnt it best if we dont know whos critiquing us? I like being able to give critiques without it being tied to my own art
>>7953703>Isnt it best if we dont know whos critiquing us? I like being able to give critiques without it being tied to my own artOh, I was just asking cos I was curious. I wasn't trying to do some kind of reverse critique or something, to think of doing that hadn't even occurred to me lol.
>>7953732all g
>>7953703ok, so this is another quick and dirty. and the same principles can transfer to colour.if we are looking at araki works, he has a stronger contrast of page white to colour markers, i would under NO cicumstances think you should be using a feathery airbrush, you lose ALOT of appealing shape if you render light without hard edge.In my example i have a SLIGHT gradient leading from the harsh highlight and from the darkest shadow, to try and imitate marker bleed, it almost apes the lights terminus before blending into the core shadow.now: since you are hard moving over to colour now, i think you should be even more reserved with your hatching, dont muddy your core lines with errant hatching, define what should be pure black and purely graphical, then let mid tones of colours convey atmosphere and lighting.last point. if you are colour picking from movies, stop.or find better colour graded movies. "cinematic" isnt the 5x5 pixel of a scene from memento, its the whole shot, get a scene you like take it into csp or photoshop and posterize it, if it doesnt have a a strong value range, its mosly likely badly lit.More importantly what makes something cinematic isnt its colour, its how its lit. film and photography are about light, which is additive, we are working the opposite, a movie scene is black until its lit, a paper canvas is white until its drawn over. preserve your white.
>>7953800Thanks, as usual looks amazing. Im inking some other pages now, so I'll reduce some of my excessive hatching, and then give the colors a goLooking over my references, I've probably been symbol drawing with color, cause alot of the stuff I've been referencing, is just hard edged, stuff, and the stuff that does have some softedged stuff, was never as excessive as mine.Either way, im still learning color, so Ill leave it simple and good looking before imitating some of the beautiful stuff. Some studies would probably help though. Like I drew >>7953384a while ago, but just the ink, so trying to understand the colors probably a good idea.Btw whats your process for that shading? Is it doing the flats with a pen thats got a texture that mimics a marker, and then a soft brush in certain areas?
>>7952338>>7952491>>7953800who the fuck are you? (is this all the same person)the edits and help from this guy (if its the same person) are very nice and helpful, from previous threads too. would be nice if i could get an id on this guy, and pester them personally for help lol (probably wouldnt like that)
>>7953868hes picrel(but no im not certain thats the same person last one is aussie knight anon, not sure on others)
>>7953703Nta it's not a bit dull so much as aside from the few characters, it makes the rest not pop out at all. Like they are harder to see than when there was no color.
>>7953883i see (thanks)
>>7953288How do I indicate visually that the last two panels are a flashback?
>>7953894Could do black borders under the first two panels
>>7953353Yeah, one page is difficult. My current plan is to sketch out 1 page, then a 2 page story the next day, then 4, then 8,(allowing for extra data one the number gets high enough) etc. until I get the rhythm of it down better.
>>7953894a grainy filter could work. araki does that
>>7953894Make the entire panel solid grey. No white in it at all.
>>7953894I would agree with >>7953919 but also add that I feel you need a transition panel to show the flashback is occuring, unless you've already done it once prior. Audiences need to not just be spoonfed the plot but outright violently smacked with the spoon, otherwise you will end up inundated with questions like "what's happening? I'm confused, whats going on?"
>>7953917>>7953919Like this?
>>7953961Looks a little slapdash
>>7953961Anon, now it looks like they are both getting buffeted by a strong gust of wind.
>>7953894There's options.
Add a box that says "15 years ago, Montana"?
>>7952835having heaps of fun with this one
A couple more pages done (for now). The stream was kept really sparsely rendered at first since I was afraid of messing it up, but it just looked way too empty. I ended up just going ham with the hatching instead. It's definitely way scarier and more committing doing heavy detail work with ink. It's just so easy to try out shit when working digitally.>>7954016Nice, looking forward to see more of what you're cooking. Crazy work with the patterning on that teapot thingy.
>>7954016That's the most chinese teapot to ever have teapoted, lmao. Good job.
>>7954051I like this
What text fonts are generally used in mangas? Do you guys prefer any in particular?
>>7954051Is this a new work of you pristine anon? Nice to see you are investing in trad too
>>7954051cute
Done for today
>>7954051A quick and dirty from me, because the hatching here goes too far and doesn't read well. Of course this can be tackled in more than a couple ways, but here are some simple ways. Lower left is using more flowing lines. Top right uses patches of hatching, both meant to indicate smooth flowing water. Lines of course concentrate the most around rocks, but you don't need to do much else than provide some details that the water is moving. This way, shadows like the one in the panel will be more distinct. Also if you're ever worried about small mistakes, Neopiko line white whiteout pen really helps ease anxiety of having to fix things later.
>>7954108Thank you!>>7954135Yes, I'm planning to go trad in the long run, so I'm making a practice chapter to get a better feel for the workflow>>7954137Thanks!>>7954168I really appreciate the pointers. I initially tried something akin to your right example, but I didn't do a very good job down putting down those patches of hatching. So I might have gone a bit overboard in the end, overdoing it. I actually have a neopiko pen, but it seems to react with my ink, so I need to either get a different whiteout medium or a different ink. I just bought an ink refill, so probably gonna look for a different whiteout
>someone here complains they did something wrong/not good enough>it looks completely fine to me and is better than what I can do
>>7954359Anon, their problems are not your problems. Their skills are not your skills. Just focus on besting who you were yesterday. Anything else will just keep you forever miserable.
How do I go from making art that just looks like lines, to making art that looks like something real? The drawing above here is a drawing of a motorbike, and it looks like exactly that, a drawing. You see the lines. But the drawing below FEELS like a motorbike, your first impression is not that it's a drawing but that it's a motorbike, there's a strong believability in it. It feels real.I'm sure one part of it is just sheer art skill, but I feel like another part of it is some sort of mindset that I'm lacking. A way to look at what you're drawing and make the mental connection to draw what's real, rather than to draw just lines.
>>7954398We're all familiar with the idea of symbol drawing, but that idea usually only applies to absolute beginners. But what if the principle of symbol drawing can be applied even to more advanced artists?Drawing not the actual wheel of a motorbike, but merely a torus shape in perspective and coloring it black.
>>7954398don't think in terms of line, think in value and shape
>>7954359Getting better at something is a process of learning where you falter and it has no end. Higher skills don't translate to immediate and effortless satisfaction, actually, it tends to only make you more aware of where you lack.>>7954400>But what if the principle of symbol drawing can be applied even to more advanced artists? It does. You can balance the use of clean readable symbol art against realistic details and form to make very pleasing art too. For manga it's necessary to learn when to depict reality and when to use symbols. Good depictions of realistic places and objects give a sense of space and a world that feels like your characters really exist in. Sometimes you have to symbol draw in order for the art to be easy to understand at a glance. There's a time and place for both.
>>7954398look at the tire, it doesnt really have an outline, its a mass of black shaped in a circle and has roughness as it spins and light where the suns hitting it, giving it depth. Same with the metal on the bike. I know what you mean and its the hardest thing in drawing but I started to see shapes as a collection of shadows more and it helped. You could even improve the motorcycle on top by removing a lot of the lineart and filling in a lot of the metal with pure black, then adding white highlight on the chrome.

Thanks to all the anons helping out btw. I think I'm getting tired and I'm only 1/6th of the way through, next time I make a comic I'll make it shorter and give myself more time to finish each page. I think I still have an hour of work left in me today so if there's something egregious let me know

>>7954738That's a bit long, but it's not unheard of for /mmg/. We have at least another anon whose releases creep around that range. >>7955382I spoke to some guys last year at oz comic con about it, literally just follow whats on their websites. Usually just a synopsis, and 8-10 pages. Your arts already well above the average for these publishers. If you wanna work making art full time, probably the best avenue. Up to you though, ive heard bad stuff about people being fucked by publishers, and you lose some creative control.
>>7955447>I spoke to some guys last year at oz comic con about itNow there's THREE Aussies? What is /mmg/, a train station where the only stops are Brazil and Australia?

The Australians, they're taking over!
>>7955447I've worked parallel to the creative industry for most of my adult life (fine art > graphic design > fashion design > illustration> currently culinary), I just dont see a niche for my specific hyper focused manga, its why i've not considered it in any way commercially, maybe when its all done, I can look at publishing or self publishing, but I dont see the audience in Australia.
>>7955519Well yeah audience is 100% not in Australia, youd wanna submit to an american or euro publisher. But yeah none of us have read your whole manga full way through and your the only one who knows what your truely aiming for. Im just saying, once its done, could be a good idea to submit it to image, darkhorse, and the multitude of other publishers, when your done as opposed to just putting it out there for free (which also has its benefits), but yeah your already aware of this
>>7955519>dont see the audience in AustraliaIs it that Aussies dont care about reading comics at all or the govt having a melty over subject matter? Asking as an outsider.
>>7955542i'd say it comes down to scale, our population is only 28 million, compress that further into the few people that might be wanting to engage with your media, as for "govt having a melty" i haven't heard anything about that specifically, i do wonder how dingle deals with that aspect, especially with the new anti-porn/social media/age verification crackdown for teenages.
>>7955542Im just saying that you wouldnt wanna distribute comics exclusively in australia, culturally we’re culturally extremely similar to the US and the rest of the anglosphere, itd be like exclusively distributing your comic just in Indiana. So might as well go to the top and get is distributed everywhere. Some stories are more country specific tham others, but i dont think americans are gonna look at this cool story about a hot princess and cool knight and go “i dont understand this, its too foreign in concept to me”

>>7956350>I know you asked others, but I figured it'd be nice to look back at all the stuff leading to current.Hey aussie knight anon, I wasn't trying to purposely ask others and ignore you, was just trying to ask generally is all. Did you always fixate on the two main characters (older guy, younger buxom girl) since day 1? Seems like those were always your muses.
>>7956353only really for chef/knight who was a stand in for Marco Pierre white. my ORIGINAL first try at a hentai was about a younger guy in the 70's, and it would be influenced by the pornos of the time. boogie nights coded.the girls are always blonde/platinum, when I was a fashion designer i had a model that walked for me and was just the most stunning chick i've ever worked with, she lives real rent free in my head. im not so invested in her buxomness, that was more a payoff to a single joke in the chef comic. "normally when they deliever the the milk its a boy on a bike not the whole cow"i do like older guys though, they have enough time to be masters of something, and enough time to get jaded, two characteristics i like that can bounce of a bright eyed young kinda dumb hot bitch.

I remember in the last thread someone was confused on the trasition panels I had, and I told them they were pretty common in coro coro. It got me thinking, but do some magazines have style guides? Coro coro is really the only magazine where i've noticed these empty transition panels used, plus a lot of coro coro comics tend to have really bold and thick line work across their series. However, thick line work is mainly for comedy, and action series have thinner line work.

>>7959710Actually I take it back. >>7960088>>7960102It's inevitable, that's just how the world works. Not many people want to acknowledge this but despite being self-aware humans are mostly fodder and not as important as media likes to make them believe. Most people will fall under the radar and only a few will find great success.
>>7960102Sometimes there isn't a solution, at least not that is possible without a complete change in the current situation. And even then, as >>7960112 states, most people are doomed to complete irrelevance. It's just how the numbers roll out. It's not going to stop me from making my comics, though; I have a small hut very dedicated readership and I'm grateful for any fans.
>>7960102Maybe it would be better to take a more local approach instead of trying to appeal to a global audience, since that puts you in direct competition with thousands of similar works that are much better than yours.
>>7960173>much better*much more successful
The writer for the comic I'm working for tried killing himself and since then I lost all will to continue the project but I want it to be finished.Got any suggestions anons? I'm paralyzed right now
>>7960245Take a break, continue the comic, start your own, or practice for a bit. Looks like your schedule just opened up.
>>7959806Dont sweat it, line thickness and texture and weight in my opinion is the hardest thing about drawing. Its basically what draftmanship is, its the definition of drawing and what makes it seperate from painting. People spend their entire lives learning how to add texture and form with just lines. What I notice from my favorite mangas is that line weight comes from how they draw each line, if that makes sense. For cheeks most artists draw them the same direction every time for every character, and change the angle and direction the pen goes accordingly, and the pen will ink more naturally around a bend or when it stops to turn a corner. Either they draw it in one line with the pen slowing down around corners and naturally becoming thicker (faces in profile), or they DON'T draw things in one smooth line and instead draw it in seperate lines that don't even connect (ino's hair bang). You'll see examples of both and everything in between and I think variation in thickness is easier to achieve in real life with real pens that leave more ink the slower you go.
>>7960173If the internet was seperated by continent (+japan can connect with everyone), things would improve in all facets of life, but that ship sailed long ago.
>>7955555>i do wonder how dingle deals with that aspectIs it now illegal to post drawings of titties on the internet...? Why would I be in any trouble with the law?
>>7956330I don't, though I could. My hentai idols don't really either, so I don't see the need. All of these are just advice on how the author in question makes things. And I suspect a lot of these are just "shit, I gotta come up with something for this thing" rather than the actual approach the authors take. Don't put too much stock in them.
>>7959806>>7960317nta but I was looking at this foot in a manga I was reading recently and remarked at how it was drawn. If I was drawing this, I probably would have drawn it with thin consistant lines, but it's not drawn like that, it's drawn almost like caligraphy, maybe that's the better way to draw?
>>7960329How I would have drawn it... which compared to the original, looks totally boring
>>7959739Line weight isn't the only way to do that. You can have completely uniform line widths and still achieve a readable, clear composition. Uniform line weight is not an issue.
>>7960332Yes but this guy isn't Moebius nor does he appear to be studying artists who use uniform line weight. Animation and certain styles like Moebius get away with it because the lines are relatively thin and don't add too much visual weight compared to the values/colors. Anon is using thickass lines everywhere when he could litterally just change the size of his brush by 1-2 pixels for the inner lines and then 1-2 pixels larger on the outer lines or for things closer to the camera. With very little effort it's possible to have pleasing line weight even with pen pressure turned off. Every time this guy has gotten a valid critique he's ignored it and made excuses.
Can a GPT Japanese translation work for something simple, or is it still better to pay someone fluent to write for you? I want to make a Touhou doujin.
>>7960341If he doesn't want to use line weight then it's completely fair to ignore the guy just repeatedly telling him to use line weight. It doesn't solve the problems with his drawings. However, I agree, using lighter lines over all would probably be beneficial. But it's not going to look good just like that, he just doesn't have the mileage. It's silly to think you can make someone draw better just with words. Discard that notion. Improvement takes practice, and he's getting practice. Give it time.>>7960343You could always MTL/AI translate then have a human proofread it. Language isn't a barrier anymore.
>>7960343won't sound natural unless a native writes it
>>7960329calligraphy is a good way to see it, lines do a lot they can be shadows and light too.
>>7960343I've been thinking on this too. Use chatgpt and try your best so the clanker writes it as if it was a native, then go to fiverr with an actual native to proof read it, that might be at least cheaper than paying for the whole professional translation and at the end you get an okish result. Still, japs will prolly hate it because they know their media and culture and you are a bottom of the barrel gaijin weaboo, so just go english and call it a day?
>>7960343Japanese people don't deserve to understand my story unless they can read it in God's language.
>>7960355I see. I do have a friend who can help me revising it. Also I do have to get ashmed of myself and learn japanese>>7960374It wont be long and I just want to see how far I can go
Do you guys have a group where you critique each other's ideas privately or something? Everyone I tell my manga ideas to thinks I'm great so I never get good feedback and I know you guys are fucking haters
>>7960495I can give you private critique in my van anon. Come here
>>7960343I think it would work better if you had some basic Japanese knowledge (N5/N4). While AI can translate well, JP is full of nuances that might be lost or lose consistency.
>>7960495can you post your comic
>>7960495I don't think you'll get opinions any realer than here. if you get hated on, it's likely because someone genuinely doesn't like your stuff and I think that's valuable feedback too>>7959727Looks nice, but feels a bit off somehow. Specifically the screentoning. Maybe it's too uniformly sharp?>>7959649Very cool. Feels like something I would love to read>>7959353It's ok if that's the way you like it. As a reader though I agree with the others, the clean static line work makes it feel sterile and uninteresting to me. I would more likely read it if the whole thing were drawn like the last panel, it might not be as clean, but it has a lot more energy
>>7960495You must become the hater that you need.
>>7960528>Very cool. Feels like something I would love to readAppreciate the kind comment anon. Here is the finished page
>>7960535Oh no I hate it now. Just kidding, cool joyful stuff. Hope to see more
>>7960341I'm not making any excuses. I know my line weight is an issue because you fags never stop talking about it. I'm just deliberately choosing to not do anything about it. Like I said, to me it's not enough of a big deal to spend time on fixing it. I have already experimented with other line widths and didn't really like the way it looked. I do wish my lines were more stylish and interesting, but I can't even draw a straight with my tablet without it coming off wobbly. What you're seeing is pretty much the best I can do in the moment. It's either that or the insane chicken scratching I use on sketches like picrel. Changing my style would require dedicated studies and I'm not gonna do that right now.
>>7960528>As a reader though I agree with the others, the clean static line work makes it feel sterile and uninteresting to me.I know. That's why I try to compensate with tones and rendering, which is something I'm also not doing quite well according to what others have said.
>>7960495>Do you guys have a group where you critique each other's ideas privately or something?i remember once joining a discord server that claimed to be affiliated with this place and had a few of the regular posters but they spent more time lamenting the decline of western civilization while not even living in the northern hemisphere than drawing
>>7960611>I can't even draw a straight with my tablet without it coming off wobblyTwo things, Sunburn anon. First, are you drawing the lines in question with your wrist solely or by locking in the muscles in your hand/wrist/back? I do the latter and it helps with drawing straight lines. Secondly, since you're not on a tablet why not check if the program you have uses a stabilizer or even get something like Lazy Nezumi for your stabilizer needs?
If I sell self published work can I do the same with fan manga under the same name? Actually now that I think about it are published authors allowed to sell secondary creations?
i just glanced at the op link and some links are broken or the files are in some obscure format that can't be openCan i learn making manga like paneling, story telling,etc... by just reading manga?im not trying to make One Piece just some 5~7 pages short doujins
>>7960863check out this howie
>>7960683I mostly use my wrist. I tried using my shoulder a few times but it didn't make much difference. I never had this problem when drawing on paper. I realized it's easier to draw when rotating the canvas and drawing from a direction that feels easier so I've also been trying to do that more often.
>>7957575back to drawing, I spent the weekend at a pokemon tournament where a friend was playing; you'd assume women in the pokemon community would be like the ogres in the smash or speedrunning community, not so, most of them were pretty normal looking and cute
>>7960780>Actually now that I think about it are published authors allowed to sell secondary creations?Yes.
>>7960671Not much different from the threads then
brainlet hereshould i make the base sketch with the text ballons in mind or without them?
>>7961027With, otherwise you'll end up with a nice pic wondering how to ruin it the least amount with the dialogue bubble you forgot to account for. Speaking from experience.
>>7961027Bit of a silly question. You're going to have text balloons, why wouldn't you take that into account when laying out the page?
>>7961027Both. Sketch with bubbles for pages with the "main drawing" and sketch without for pages that are gonna be more for dialogue. I've found my pages look so much nicer when I sketch without, only keeping a vague idea where the bubbles would be. And there's a third method which is laying out the text first and drawing around it.
>>7961027Sincere answer is that after a while you kind of end up doing it subconsciously anyway. I dont have a "script" for my story per say but I know in a given panel that they are gonna say SOMETHING so I always leave some space. Only when I know a character needs to dump some text is when I outright leave empty space.
>>7960863If your new to comics even on some small scale shit like something thats 5-7 pages I would try just making the drawings themselves first and then later in some program like Photoshop or CPS shuffle them around on your canvas until you get something that looks and flows right.Like I draw on paper and sometimes given the scene I still just make the drawings that I know I need in isolation and move those drawings around on the bigger bristol board that I plan to work on. After a while youll get enough of a sense for it where you can just do that in your head and not move your drawings around like a puzzle piece, but if your new to it just make the drawings and worry about paneling later
>>7960611I prefer this to your clean pass
>>7952113I can’t figure out a way to use textured brushes on my works without it looking like shit. I see that people use G-Pen a lot but it doesn’t quite turn into a good result for meHow do people manage to make detailed expressions and scenes with a small canvas? Is there something Im missing?
>>7961164Are they using a small canvas? It's more common to draw on very large canvases.
>>7961198I see people use 800 px canvases or something slightly larger than that for webcomics, when I do it I need a pen super small to get in the details and it doesn’t look good at the end.
>>7961473are you sure you're not just looking at the scaled down result? 800 px isn't a good size to draw on for these purposes. My own master sizes are 7k x 9k
>>7961473Yeah no, that's the resized version to minimize space on the servers and bandwidth to load. The actual canvases are several times larger.
>>7961487>>7961523Yeah that makes more sense, thanks for the advice
how do I find an artist gf to collab with
>>7961595post your comic I'll hook you up
>>7961595Gf or gf (astolfo mode)?
>cooking on lineart>look back at rough draft>lineart in comparison has the angle slightly wrong, eyes not looking in the correct direction, less unhinged smile for the angry character How does that bastard past me have it so together? I can never match his spirit, he is an untouchable master...
>>7952113Beggar here, any artists want to work with me to illustrate a ~35 page storyboard I made on this?I don't think I can pay anything. No guarantees but probably nothing. So, an "equal partnership" aka you basically do all the actually difficult stuff.I guess the main target audience for this post is artists who are currently bored/have free time and don't have any huge ideas of their own at the moment.https://manga-academy.kodansha.com/award/mangaka-discovery/ 22 July 2026,23:59(JST)Thinking of giving this a casual shot.If you're interested let me know I'll drop an email.
>>7961932post your storyboard
>>7961942i'm shy so i'd rather just share it privately
>>7961943You can't even post a single panel from your storyboard? Just one? Come on, now.
>>7961946ok here's a panel. it's not from the storyboard i'm talking about though, i just made it
>>7961932I would do it but I looked at your posts here and decided to not actually do it instead which I feel is the smarter option
sneak peek for cool guys only
>>7962143Love the modern art statues as office decor, Moon anon.
>>796193235 pages in one month come on now
>>7961932that contest says they're not looking for art skills so if you have a storyboard already then you should draw it out yourself.
>>7961943>>7961932You should try to put your work out there more. Most people who can draw would rather draw their own ideas unless something truly amazing strikes them, so you'll never meet someone to collab with like this.
>>7962180>>7961920
>>7962179thanks, the one on the right is a nod to an old painting i made
>>7962206What?
>>7962251nothing..
>>7960948I'll submit this comic to the Kodansha thing for the lolz
https://namicomi.com/en/chapter/HrTCU3R7trying a new platform to publish my stuff on
>>7962200I know they'll try to do that to an extent but practically speaking there's no way decent looking art isn't a buff>>7962180It can be pretty low effort, low effort art from a practiced artist looks way better to a judge than low effort art from someone who isn't very good>>7962205That is true but I'm hoping to meet people that aren't "most people", I suppose.
>>7962429like shoot you shot I suppose. but everyone is right, in this partnership you really bring nothing to the table. >>7959727>>7960528yeah I noticed that aswell, i'm chalking it to the compression of that specific jpeg it doesnt look as bad in .csp,>>7962302lush as always, what do we call you orange-pig-anon?
>>7962429you were able to make a whole storyboard so you have it in you walk this path. You're just letting fear stop you. You drawing your idea and bringing it to life can only help make it look more attractive to another artist to become a team with you. It won't hurt.
>>7962455>in this partnership you really bring nothing to the table.Yeah I don't disagree>>7962476Thank you for the motivational words. It doesn't change my plan for this current thing, but I appreciate it and people like you are what make these threads good.
>>7962455>in this partnership you really bring nothing to the tableONE though
>bring nothing to the tableThat kind of depends on the quality of the writing.I haven't seen anything of this story, though, so I can't pass judgement. But I can say most of the people here posting their comics could benefit from collaborating with someone who actually understands writing and storytelling. Whether that's you, well, how would I know.
>>7962545Nobody here is ONE. Everybody in /mmg/ is of varying skill levels and everyone is plugging away diligently at their little worlds and sometimes working on a fun little community project like /ic/ Jump, but nobody here is ONE with a story that is simultaneously a lucky lightning in a bottle combined with also being a funny satirization of superhero stuff to the point an insanely talented mangaka decided to take over the art production side of things. Nobody is going to come down from mangaka heaven to save any of us, we all have to work on our artwork ourselves.
>>7962545ONE put his work out there for everyone to judge. His comics were already popular on 2ch before Miurata.
>>7962455>lush as alwaysbest compliment I've ever received>what do we call you orange-pig-anon?I go by Hanameru on everything art related
Ayo, new thread here fr fr no cap on god:>>7962838
