So far, I've spent a year of my life learning the fundamentals of drawing, but I never really improved my observational skills. My ultimate goal used to be drawing cartoons, but now I don't know how I should continue.

Copy better artists and do what is fun to you. If it becomes too tedious then it's probably not your thing
>>
>>7959038
Draw what you want
Identify what went wrong
Learn how to not do that anymore
Repeat
Marc Brunet has a video on his channel called “how to draw anything” or something, I can’t remember.
Point is just draw what you want to draw and be self-critical at the same time, that’s really all there is to it. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you’ll improve

Learning about process is also important. Having a process which fits to you can work wonders.

Also just collecting inspirations. If you are not inspired then you don't even know what to draw and feel less motivated.

Anon, I will tell you my way
draw, just fucking draw until it ''clicks''
even if you are bad, the bad ones are the best, at some point you will got tired/angry of ugly stuff and you will realize what make things better
drawing is a thing milliage is the king
just draw

There is no way to know that. You have to be exposed to many different approaches and only the ones that stick with you work. It's a game of practice and stacking the right Legos.

You have to struggle. If you only draw what you've already learned or what comes naturally to you, you'll never improve. Your goal should be to draw what you suck at, find what needs fixing, figure out how to fix it, and then apply the solution.

For developing observational skills, you're gonna want to do lots of blind contour drawings, upside down drawings, negative space drawings, and memory/active recall drawings (find references and observe them, then hide them and draw from memory, then take them out and draw while looking at them).

Draw consistently. Draw new things constantly.

Worst advice possible, we have INNUMERABLE examples of people who have drawn for 5 or even 10 years and have remained permaprebegs the whole time because they are incapable of learning from their mistakes or critically evaluating their own work

so basically DRSB? ill pick up ktd instead in that case, drsb has a lot of pseudo science that confuses me more

Nope, don't do Keys to Drawing, it's mostly a waste of time. You don't even really NEED to read DRSB, just do the exercises. The book is indeed pseudo science but the exercises get results not because the woo-woo crap is legit in any way, but because the exercises were originally part of your typical beginner art education when public schools were better funded.

I would recommend you buy these books as well: The Art of Responsive Drawing, The Natural Way to Draw, and Cognitive Drawing, then do the exercises within.

At the very least, please study simple 3D forms and grind shapes/lines.

My rule has always been that anything I can do, I must be able to understand in my mind, Rotating the apple idea.

If you can't rotate the apple start with the simplest thing you can manage.

This is also how programmers work.
You should feel proud for asking the right questions OP

ok.

do you happen to have a pdf of the DRSB workbook?
>>
>>7959061
>>7959078
these. just copy what you want to draw and just do some studies from books on the side
>>

Fucking larp. No one completed Natural Way to Draw’s crazy curriculum on their own.
And Drawing on the Right Side and Keys to Drawing are literally filled with exercises and ideas adapted from Natural Way to Draw. Fucking larper.
